Human Spaceflight: Doing Science in Space
Astronauts spend some of their time in space doing scientific research. The vantage point there is good for observational science, and the microgravity environment in an orbiting spacecraft is an interesting place to do physical and biological experiments.
While some types of scientific research in space can be automated, others benefit from the expertise of astronauts. The Apollo astronauts performed geological research while on the moon. Soviet cosmonauts performed experiments on board the Salyut series of space stations beginning in 1971. Scientist-astronauts did research in Skylab, an orbital workshop and observatory occupied in 1973-74, and Spacelab, a science facility carried in the Space Shuttle during the 1980s and 1990s. International crews also did science on board the space station Mir at the time. Spacelab turned the Shuttle into a temporary space station until a permanent research facility -- the International Space Station -- was ready.
Geology on the Moon
On the Moon, astronauts used standard equipment and techniques for geological research. They collected rock samples, drilled core samples of soil, made measurements, and recorded data much as geologists on Earth do. This equipment was modified slightly to allow for handling with spacesuit gloves.
Studying the Sun from Skylab
Astronauts took turns working at the control console for the solar observatory (the Apollo Telescope Mount) attached to the Skylab orbital workshop. From this instrument panel in the Multiple Docking Adapter module, they monitored the Sun and operated cameras and telescopes to record sunspots and solar flares.
A Laboratory in Space
Working inside Spacelab on 16 different Shuttle missions, astronauts from several countries conducted hundreds of experiments. Among the most successful were investigations in the life and materials sciences.

The School of Education and Human Performance held its first annual Beginning Teacher Support Program on June 15th, a program designed to connect with and provide support to recent graduates within their first three years of classroom teaching. Sessions that focused on Surviving the First Year of Teaching and Integrating Technology into the Common Core Curriculum were offered as professional development. Over 20 students attended the event. Future events are being planned for Homecoming and Spring 2013.
Of particular interest: The Beginning Teacher Survival Guide session offers new teachers a variety of helpful hints, resources, suggestions, and strategies to tackle the ever changing classroom environment. Topics include data driven decision making, Common Core Standards, infusing technology, problem based learning, writing grants to support instruction, classroom management, Professional Learning Communities, and parent/community relations. A Beginning Teacher Survival Guide wiki-space provides participants with an assortment of ready to use lesson ideas to begin the new school year with an interactive and energized approach. Additional review games ideas and resources are also included in the wiki-space to facilitate review sessions for beginning teachers while keeping students actively engaged and focused on learning targets regardless of the grade level or subject area.

8 December 1942. An attack by three manned torpedoes from the auxiliary ship Olterra against British naval targets is thwarted in Gibraltar. Three divers were killed by depth charges when the British harbour defence "reacted furiously" to the attack. Among the dead were Lt Licio Visintini, commander of the divers unit on board the Olterra, Petty Officer Giovanni Magro and Sergeant Salvatore Leone, from Taormina, Sicily. Leone's body was never found. Sgt Leone was awarded the Medaglia d'oro al Valor Militare
This memorial was erected in the Community Gardens in Taormina on the 50th anniversary of the attack. The memorial includes a rebuilt maiale.
On March 19, the United States co-sponsored an event with Albania, Argentina, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Georgia, Hungary, Israel, Romania, and the United Kingdom at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland to highlight the dire human rights situation in Venezuela. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Carrie Filipetti led a panel that included a former prisoner of conscience, an investigative journalist, a legal expert, and a Member of the National Assembly who shared firsthand accounts of repression and explained the depth of the human rights crisis under the former Maduro regime.
This event highlighted how the former Maduro regime has clung to power by abusing human rights and instilling fear in its citizens. Reports of widespread use of torture, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, raids by secret police, closure of independent media, and bans on political activity worsen by the day. The panelists presented a panorama of the former Maduro regime’s systematic repression of human rights.

According to 2009 statistics, on any given night upwards of 18,000 people are considered "homeless" in the Detroit Metro area. Something like 10,000 of them find shelter within the hundreds of abandoned buildings throughout the city.
That was 2009.
