The former Holy Ascension Church built in 1914, is currently being used as the Hulu Selangor District Traffic Police Headquarters (Ibupejabat Polis Trafik Hulu Selangor). In 1926 this building had been adaptive reused when Charles Compton Reade, the government town planner of the Federated Malay States (FMS) proposal of the new township involving the hilly site as the administrative centre.

Kerajaan Sanggau didirikan oleh Daradante pendatang dari Ketapang yang menikah dengan Babai Cingak dari suku Dayak Sanggau. Pusat pemerintahan berada di Desa Mengkiang (ke arah hulu sungai Sekayam). Kemudian pada tahun 1826 Sultan Ayub sebagai panembahan kala itu, memindahkan pusat kerajaan Sanggau ke Desa Kantuk. Itulah sepenggal kisah historis Keraton Surya Negara, Sanggau.
