Constructed in 1897-98, the long-vacant Jamaica Savings Bank building "is a fine and particularly exuberant example of the classically inspired Beaux-Arts style strikingly executed in carved limestone and wrought iron, and is one of only a few buildings in the borough of Queens to embrace that architectural aesthetic. Prominently sited on Jamaica Avenue, the bank building is an urbane presence on the neighborhood’s main commercial thoroughfare. Although the four-story structure is relatively small in scale, the imposing design of the facade conveys a monumentality which is appropriately suited to the distinguished image and reputation of the banking institution, while lending the building the formal elegance of a private club or townhouse."
UPDATE (Oct. 2016): The old bank and its two neighbors to the right are being turned into a three-building retail complex. The 10-story tower that stood immediately to the right (visible above) has been knocked down and is being replaced by a structure similar in height to the bank building. Here's a rendering of the proposed development.

A May Day Bank Holiday Monday visit to Canons Ashby, a National Trust run property in Northamptonshire.
I first saw the Priory Church of St Mary when we first arrived from the car park, and it was the last place we visited at Canons Ashby before we left.
Canons Ashby Priory was an Augustinian priory at Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire, England.
The Priory was founded by Stephen la Leye on a site to the south of the present church between 1147 and 1151 in the reign of Henry II.
In 1253 the Augustinians were granted a licence to dig the Norwell, which still exists north of the present church, to supply water to the priory.
In 1537 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries the Crown granted the priory and its estates to Sir Francis Bryan, a close ally of Henry VIII. Bryan held the estate for only about a year before selling it in 1538 to Sir John Cope, a wealthy Banbury lawyer. Sir John's daughter Elizabeth inherited what is thought to have been the priory farmhouse [wrong – Wilkyns farm was part of John Dryden's inheritance. Copes Ashbie – across the road – was inherited by Elizabeth's brother, who died early leaving his sons as Wards of the Dryden family]. In 1551 she married John Dryden, who extended the building to form the earliest parts of Canons Ashby House.
Part of the building survives: the Church of England parish church of St Mary dates from about 1250 and this, together with Canons Ashby House, is now owned by the National Trust. Its power and size can be judged by its outlying buildings which cover a large area of the surrounding countryside. The remains of the priory's hospitalium survive as the monastic building centred on the parish church of Maidford, about 5 miles (8 km) away.

La Turbie is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in south-eastern France. La Turbie can be reached either from Cap d'Ail on the coast or from the Grand Corniche. Within the town is the Trophy of Augustus, also known as the Trophée des Alpes. La Turbie is built, partly, with old stones recovered from the ruins of the Trophy of Augustus, a Roman monument built by the emperor Augustus to celebrate his victory over the Ligurian tribes which lived in the mountains of the area and attacked the merchants plying the Roman trade routes. en.wikipedia.org

I went to the 6th annual Ohio Growth Summit at the Small Business Development Center at Columbus State Community College. As always it was a wonderful event for networking and learning new business trends. Michael Bowers always does a great job, every year to put on this event and bring in world class speakers like Nate Riggs, and the keynote speaker for the afternoon, Carrie "The Barefoot Executive" Wilkerson.
Nate moderated a panel discussion on personal branding that included well known Central Ohio marketing and advertising types like; Artie Isaac, Jacob Stoops, Amy Parrish, Jason Yun, Andrew Brush, Rocky VanBrimmer, special guest Desarae Veit, Tyler Durbin, Shane Haggerty, and Neal Roberts. After a quick break there were break out sessions with business pros like Jon Myers, Mark Sellers, Tiffany Timmons, and Nancy Stoll. There was an added surprise by the Small Business Beanstalk's Timothy "Wolf" Starr leaving community cards for everybody that attended the event.
The color orange and looking good naked seemed to be the theme of this year's summit. You can see all the photos from this event here: http://goo.gl/mHP8
Pyramids of Güímar . Tenerife.
Mysterious and controversial, but still worth a visit, especially for the very nice garden next to it, the great documentary about adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and his travels and the Rapa Nui exhibition.
The site is very well maintained and organized, but they emphasize a little too much on the Thor Heyerdahl theory, ignoring pretty much all other theories about the origins of the Pyramids.
From Wikipedia.
The Pyramids of Güímar refer to six rectangular pyramid-shaped, terraced structures, built from lava stone without the use of mortar. They are located in the district of Chacona, part of the town of Güímar on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There are claims that the structures have been dated to the 19th century and their original function explained as a byproduct of contemporary agricultural techniques. However, results of excavations have so far proved inconclusive.
Other pyramids employing the same methods and materials of construction can be found in various sites on Tenerife. In Güímar itself there were nine pyramids, only six of which survive.

Hey Hey November! Purchases this month ranged from a bag of rice to an iphone. I also happened to buy some swimming medals from the mid 90s and a package of gremlins cards for no reason what so ever. OH and I really wanted our house to smell like fall and winter (hence the candle and incense purchases).
The cover pattern pays homage to the rice that I purchased on November 1st. The rice was white...not red, teal and peach.
Enjoy!
Every copy of What Did You Buy Today comes with a button or a sticker or a postcard or whatever I happen to think would be awesome to give away that day. The covers are color laser printed onto cardstock and the guts are b&w photocopies. Oh and a plastic bag. It all comes in a fancy schmancy plastic bag. SWEET!
Each issue contains 30 or 31 or 28 or 29 (leap year) drawings.
You may browse November's purchase drawings here: www.flickr.com/photos/kateconsumption/sets/72157608583952...
Remember, the original drawings are for sale as well. www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=17522663

This alloy was solution treated. Hardening is achieved by the controlled rejection of copper from a supersaturated solid solution. There is some additional hardening from precipitates such as MgSi2. From the phase diagram for the pure aluminium-copper binary system, it can be seen that the solubility of copper in -aluminium increases with increasing temperature up to the eutectic temperature of about 550°C. The equilibrium microstructure below the eutectic temperature is a two-phase mixture of -aluminium and the Al2Cu intermetallic phase (also known as q phase). The initial solution heat treatment aims to obtain the maximum possible concentration of copper in solution. Rapid quenching from the solution temperature prevents the kinetically slow precipitation of , forming a highly supersaturated solid solution of copper. Rapid quenching also preserves the large number density of vacancies in the aluminium lattice from the high solution temperature. This increases copper diffusion rates at low temperature and accelerates ageing. Care must be taken with commercial alloys where the additional alloying elements reduce the eutectic temperature. This reduces the maximum solution heat treatment temperature since heating above the eutectic temperature causes the growth of a brittle intergranular eutectic. Ageing may occur at room temperature (Natural Ageing) or above (Artificial Ageing), and takes place via a sequence of precipitation reactions. At low temperatures, the sequence may not be completed even after very long times, whereas at high temperatures, where diffusion is rapid, the early stages may not be observed. The microstructure in this sample shows q phase at high magnification. The crystallographic relationship between the precipitates and the aluminium lattice is apparent from the alignment of the precipitates.
