Each year since 1994 the Youth in Arts Program of Marin County has hosted an Italian Street Painting Festival in San Rafael, California. It is a lively event in which 200 chalk artists – modern day madonnari – create large, ephemeral street paintings.
My son Charlie (barleybenton on Flickr) did a fine job photographing the festival in 2008 and 2009 using a camera mounted on a painter’s pole. This year he invited me to come along. This year Charlie is using a Canon SD800is mounted in a new servo-controlled cradle and lofted atop an 11-meter carp pole. The camera is controlled using an Arduino-based system of his own design that allows him to aim the camera with a joystick while watching a video feed. It is a nifty rig that can also make automatic panoramic sweeps with a single command.
Charlie’s approach has been to shoot relatively close views of the chalk art under diffuse light. To do this he waits for the late afternoon hours when neighboring buildings shade the street. In the absence of sharp shadows Charlie’s photographic compositions are nice and clean and thus it is easier to read the chalk works
I decided to work a different thread by shooting from a higher vantage point, often with Panasonic's 18-mm equivalent wide-angle adapter, and doing so when the sun created strong shadows. So this set addresses the general context of the festival and tries to juxtapose the two-dimensional paintings with the three-dimensional crowd.
I have posted an unusually large set of images from the Italian Street Painting Festival in response to queries from passerby and artists who promised to look for them on Flickr. A visit to Waterperry Gardens in South Oxfordshire. The furthest we've been on the eased lockdown period of the pandemic.
Waterperry Gardens are a garden with a museum in the village of Waterperry near Wheatley east of Oxford in Oxfordshire, England.
Beatrix Havergal (1901–1980) established the Waterperry School of Horticulture, a school of horticulture for ladies, that existed there from 1932 until her retirement in 1971. The story of the Waterperry school is told in the book "Waterperry: A Dream Fulfilled" by Ursula Maddy. Waterperry estate provided Royal Sovereign Strawberries to Buckingham Palace and the Chelsea Flower Show. In 1972 the School of Economic Science purchased the Waterperry Estate, including Waterperry Gardens, which it continues to run to generate revenue for the school. There are eight acres of landscaped ornamental gardens with an alpine garden, formal knot garden, herbaceous borders, riverside walk, rose garden, and water-lily canal. There are also five acres of orchards. The garden has the National Collection of Kabschia saxifrages. Other facilities include a gallery, garden shop, gift shop, museum, plant centre, and tea shop. The Museum of Rural Life is located in an 18th-century granary building, with displays of implements and tools. Waterperry Gardens has 5 acres of apple orchards, with a reputation for fine fruits, which supply a host of top hostelries. The gardens are considered a notable for the broad variety of snowdrops that grow in the spring. They music video to the song "Yesterday" by artist Natalie Shay was filmed at Waterperry Gardens.

Appuntamento domenica 10 giugno al Mediolanum Forum di Assago con The Script, per la prima delle due tappe italiane del loro tour mondiale che ha già fatto registrare sold out da un capo all’altro del mondo. Milano è la prima tappa italiana dell’European Freedom Child tour, mentre la seconda ed ultima è al Gran Teatro Geox di Padova.
Inizialmente previsti per il 9 e 11 marzo, i live nel nostro paese erano stati rimandati a causa di una bronchite che aveva colpito il frontman della band Danny O’Donoghue.
Ad aprire lo show al Forum, e quello al Gran Teatro Geox di Padova in programma per lunedì 11 giugno, saranno i Seawards, il duo italiano composto da Giulia Granger Benvenuto e Francesco Proglio De Maria.
In scaletta non mancheranno le grandi hit della band come “Hall of Fame”, “For the First Time”, “Breakeven” o “The man who can’t be moved”, ma i live saranno anche l’occasione per presentare dal vivo al pubblico italiano i brani di “Freedom Child” – quinto album in studio della band e quarto a raggiungere il primo posto nella classifica UK – che è stato lanciato proprio dal singolo “Rain”, entrato prepotentemente nelle classifiche radiofoniche e nella Top 10 di iTunes in oltre 47 Paesi.
Il disco, pubblicato a settembre 2017, arriva a distanza di 3 anni dall’ultimo lavoro discografico: un periodo di crescita che ha portato la band ad esplorare nuovi territori sonori e ad affrontare nelle 14 tracce dell’album i cambiamenti – da quelli musicali a quelli culturali e politici – del nostro tempo.

Atendiendo una demanda de más de cuatro años los habitantes de El Rosario, en el municipio de El Marqués, la empresa Transporte Metropolitano de Querétaro (TMQro) y el Instituto Queretano del Transporte (IQT), acordaron la ampliación del servicio de la Ruta 122 con horarios definidos.
A partir de este lunes 30 de mayo la Ruta 122 tiene horarios de salida a las 6:30, 07:00 y 14:30 hrs. En tanto que las unidades darán el servicio de regreso a las 18:00, 20:30 y 21:30 hrs.
Además de ampliar el servicio, se atiende una demanda creciente de estudiantes y trabajadores de El Rosario ya que los recorridos de la Ruta 122 tanto de ida como de vuelta pasan por la zona industrial El Marqués y la Universidad Politécnica.
Durante mucho tiempo los habitantes de El Rosario vieron limitada su movilidad al contar con un servicio restringido de transporte suburbano, con está gestión impulsada por Transporte Metropolitano de Querétaro ante el IQT, se beneficia a cientos de familias de El Rosario que dejarán de pagar servicios de taxi de hasta 150 pesos para trasladarse a la Zona Metropolitana de Querétaro.
El representante de TMQro, Juan Barrios Pérez, explicó que el compromiso con los vecinos de El Rosario es evaluar en un mes los nuevos horarios y recorridos, y de ser necesario, modificarlos para hacer más eficiente el servicio con sus sugerencias.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

I bought new shoes today. Didn't take me long, except for finding the shop. I went into a bookstore close-by afterwards. When I got out, I tried some street photography just outside the bookstore.
I had to up the ISO to 400 to take this, hence the noise. She is a little out of focus but that was the best I could get with the autofocus. There's a dark spot on the lens that gets in the frame when I use the zoom, and it's getting really annoying. Cant' shake it off.

Constructed in 1897-98, the long-vacant Jamaica Savings Bank building "is a fine and particularly exuberant example of the classically inspired Beaux-Arts style strikingly executed in carved limestone and wrought iron, and is one of only a few buildings in the borough of Queens to embrace that architectural aesthetic. Prominently sited on Jamaica Avenue, the bank building is an urbane presence on the neighborhood’s main commercial thoroughfare. Although the four-story structure is relatively small in scale, the imposing design of the facade conveys a monumentality which is appropriately suited to the distinguished image and reputation of the banking institution, while lending the building the formal elegance of a private club or townhouse."
UPDATE (Oct. 2016): The old bank and its two neighbors to the right are being turned into a three-building retail complex. The 10-story tower that stood immediately to the right (visible above) has been knocked down and is being replaced by a structure similar in height to the bank building. Here's a rendering of the proposed development.
