Every Patriots Day (a local Massachusetts holiday) is Marathon Monday. Also, there is an 11AM Red Sox game, the only AM start in MLB's schedule.

This year, the 2010 USA Woman's Hockey team threw out the first pitch. I was lucky enough to get to today's game (or unlucky enough, since the Sox got killed), and to meet Meghan Duggan (#10, on left) and Erika Lawler (#2, on right) who were still sporting their medals.

I'll admit, it is not my best photo, being a little out of focus. But I rushed the shot and did not want to bother them too much, since they were clear on their own time, as evidenced by the beverages in their hands

------------------------------------------

Regione Emilia Romagna Il Presidente

A visit to the Charles Dickens Museum at 48-49 Doughty Street in Bloomsbury, London.

Dickens lived here with his wife Catherine and family from 1837, for three years. By 1839 he had become a superstar having written The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby.

The house at 48 Doughty Street was a first class family mansion, with a basement, a ground, first, second and third floor.

The Charles Dickens Museum is an author's house museum at 48 Doughty Street in King's Cross, in the London Borough of Camden. It occupies a typical Georgian terraced house which was Charles Dickens's home from 25 March 1837 (a year after his marriage) to December 1839.

In the nineteenth century, it was an exclusive residential street and had gates at either end to restrict entry and these were manned by porters. Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine Dickens (née Hogarth) lived here with the eldest three of their ten children, with the older two of Dickens's daughters, Mary Dickens and Kate Macready Dickens being born in the house.

A new addition to the household was Dickens's younger brother Frederick. Also, Catherine's 17-year-old sister Mary moved with them from Furnival's Inn to offer support to her married sister and brother. It was not unusual for a woman's unwed sister to live with and help a newly married couple. Dickens became very attached to Mary, and she died in his arms after a brief illness in 1837. She inspired characters in many of his books, and her death is fictionalized as the death of Little Nell. Dickens had a three-year lease (at £80 a year) on the property. He would remain here until 1839 when he moved to Devonshire Terrace. He upscaled to grander homes as his wealth increased and his family grew. However, Doughty Street is his only surviving London house.

The two years that Dickens lived in the house were extremely productive, for here he completed The Pickwick Papers (1836), wrote the whole of Oliver Twist (1838) and Nicholas Nickleby (1838–39) and worked on Barnaby Rudge (1840–41).

The building at 48 Doughty Street was threatened with demolition in 1923, but was saved by the Dickens Fellowship, founded in 1902, who raised the mortgage and bought the property's freehold. The house was renovated and the Dickens House Museum was opened in 1925, under the direction of an independent trust, now a registered charity. The house was listed in 1954.

Perhaps the best-known exhibit is the portrait of Dickens known as Dickens's Dream by R. W. Buss, an original illustrator of The Pickwick Papers. This unfinished portrait shows Dickens in his study at Gads Hill Place surrounded by many of the characters he had created. The painting was begun in 1870 after Dickens's death. Other notable artefacts in the museum include numerous first editions, original manuscripts, original letters by Dickens, and many personal items owned by Dickens and his family. The only known item of clothing worn by Dickens still in existence is also displayed at the museum. This is his Court Suit and sword, worn when Dickens was presented to the Prince of Wales in 1870.

Shot earlier this evening, wave after wave of whispy cloud was passing in front of the moon, so I was unable to get a clear moon shot, but the color of the sky and the cloud was beautiful anyway.... So here is today's new moon at 58% of full.

I typically upload in small sets - don't just look at the latest one in my photostream as you might be missing something you'll like more.... and your comments are ALWAYS welcome :)

Tribunal

August 21, 2004.

Here it is, the big daddy. Currently holding the record for the longest SHIP at 12 feet 6 inches, or 487 studs, the Tribunal was a substantial investment in time and labor for me. I decided that, for it I would upload an entire set of the beautiful pictures taken by Geoff Gray, in glorious high resolution. There are descriptions of what all the rooms and areas are on the web site, although the pictures are pretty substantial too.

This set is enormous, so enjoy the browsing!

Moomba Boats (@MoombaBoats) new Mojo is almost famous. After all it is already in a movie. The Moomba Mojo 2.5 Intro movie is just under 3 minutes long and well worth that amount of time. Get an eye full of the boat itself along with the magical riding it inspires. Watch this short video to put more pop in your lake life behind a Moomba Mojo. Learn even more about this 2012 Moomba wakeboard boat by reading the full new release or simply visit a Moomba dealer near you!

The elegant 18th-century interiors of Basildon Park in Berkshire lit up the small screen in the Downton Abbey Christmas special. Starring as Grantham House, the Crawleys’ London residence, Basildon Park was at the heart of the unfolding story as the family and their servants enjoy the social whirl of the summer season. The characters have always talked about it (Grantham House) but this was the first time it was show on screen. Basildon Park is a country house situated 2 miles south of Goring-on-Thames and Streatley in Berkshire, between the villages of Upper Basildon and Lower Basildon. It is owned by the National Trust and is a Grade I listed building. The house was built between 1776 and 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes and designed by John Carr in the Palladian style at a time when Palladianism was giving way to the newly fashionable neoclassicism. Thus, the interiors are in a neoclassical "Adamesque" style. Never fully completed, the house passed through a succession of owners. In 1910 it was standing empty and in 1914, it was requisitioned by the British Government as an army convalescent hospital. It was again sold in 1928 and quickly sold again. In 1929, following a failed attempt to dismantle and rebuild the house in the USA, it was stripped of many of its fixtures and fittings and all but abandoned. During World War II, the house was again requisitioned and served as a barracks, a training ground for tanks, and finally a prisoner of war camp—all activities unsuited to the preservation of an already semi-derelict building. In 1952, a time when hundreds of British country houses were being demolished, it was said of Basildon Park "to say it was derelict, is hardly good enough, no window was left intact and most were repaired with cardboard or plywood." Today, Basildon Park is as notable for its mid-twentieth-century renaissance and restoration, by Lord and Lady Iliffe, as it is for its architecture. In 1978, the Iliffes gave the house, together with its park and a large endowment for its upkeep, to the National Trust in the hope that "The National Trust will protect it and its park for future generations to enjoy." Basildon is first documented in 1311 when it was granted by the crown to Elias de Colleshull. During the 16th and early 17th centuries, the manor of Basildon was held by the Yonge family. In 1654, the Basildon estate was purchased probably on behalf of Royalist Colonel George Fane by his brother-in-law the 5th Earl of Bath who died the same year (confusion as to for whom bought caused the political state of the country at the time and by George Fane's premature death). Lord Bath's widow, the former Lady Rachael Fane, bequeathed the estate to her nephew Sir Henry Fane, George Fane's son. Little is known of Basildon during the Fane ownership, but a mansion house was built with Gothic lodges. These lodges survive and serve the present house. The manor remained a Fane possession until it was offered for sale in 1766 by the heirs of the 2nd Viscount Fane, essentially, his two married sisters Dorothy Montagu and Mary de Salis. The estate was purchased in 1771 by Sir Francis Sykes. Having made a fortune in India, Sykes returned to England to realise his social and political ambitions. For these to be fulfilled, Sykes required a grand estate conveniently close to London; he built Basildon Park to serve that purpose.

A late September 2018 visit to Packwood House, another National Trust property. Been meaning to visit this one myself for a while now!

A nice cool Sunday afternoon to visit Packwood.

Packwood House is a timber-framed Tudor manor house near Lapworth, Warwickshire. Owned by the National Trust since 1941, the house is a Grade I listed building. It has a wealth of tapestries and fine furniture, and is known for the garden of yews.

The house began as a modest timber-framed farmhouse constructed for John Fetherston between 1556 and 1560. The last member of the Fetherston family died in 1876. In 1904 the house was purchased by Birmingham industrialist Alfred Ash. It was inherited by Graham Baron Ash (Baron in this case being a name not a title) in 1925, who spent the following two decades creating a house of Tudor character. He purchased an extensive collection of 16th- and 17th-century furniture, some obtained from nearby Baddesley Clinton. The great barn of the farm was converted into a Tudor-style hall with sprung floor for dancing, and was connected to the main house by the addition of a Long Gallery in 1931.

In 1941, Ash donated the house and gardens to the National Trust in memory of his parents but continued to live in the house until 1947 when he moved to Wingfield Castle.
