This is the temporary control booth for the Sydney Opera House lighting-the-sails display light projections (to the left).
I resisted and stayed outside to take this image. The Inn is located in the village of Casleton, Derbyshire, England. The Village is home to several caves namely. The Peak Cavern. The Speedwell Cavern. The Treak Cliff Cavern and the Blue John Cavern.
Week 27/52 - In my dreams, I fly
Surprisingly this only took 3 tries and almost no photoshop. I did two more to see how they looked but still liked this the best.
2 exposures combined, one for the ambient house lighting and one for the strobe.
Thanks for looking

I shot this image while visiting my mom in Wisconsin USA about 1987 (give or take maybe 5 years) as a tranny with a Minolta. In 2000, as a test, I digitized the tranny with my 3mp Nikon 990 (my first digi-cam) for which I had a very cool attachment for shooting slides. That digitized image has been in my archives for 18 years.
A few days ago I was strolling through a folder with a few hundred of the old Nikon 990 images, looking at my kids when young, family dogs, vacations, my old house, lighting tests, textures and abstracts (not unlike what I'd shoot these days), etc.
When I saw that shot below in jjjohn's photostream, it instantly reminded me of my Wisconsin shot, and I got inspired to post it.
I didn't have time to go track down the tranny, so I opened the scan done by the Nikon 990. It was a measly 1600x1300 pixels. Fortunately, low-res life is pretty good these days. First I ran it through Topaz A.I Clear to improved the noise, then used the amazing Topaz A.I. Gigapixel to up the res by 400% to 6300x5200 pixels. A bit of retouching in Photoshop and it was ready to rock-n-roll!

In my back garden, somewhere in Worcestershire, United Kingdom, on Tuesday 15th November 2016.
About the photograph.
This is Marie, known as LadyArtist on the model booking websites, like PurplePort, which is where I found her from. I booked her for a two hours photo-shoot done at my home. The two hours photo-shoot was split into two halves, one hour was done outdoors and as a fashion portraiture photography.
In the photographs, LadyArtist is posing in a cream coloured [UK] size 16 faux fur coat by Dorothy Perkins. She is also posing in her own dark blouse, and blue jeans tucked into her black knee-length boots, and a black leather belt.
She is posing in the back garden, next to the fence and the back wall of my house, lighting was done using daylight.
After those shots, she changed into a different faux fur coat, and we moved over to the back end of the garden for different shots. You can see the other photos in my Albums, it can be found under the title of LadyArtist (Marie)

When the first hour, fashion themed outdoor photo-shoot was done, the next hour was done indoors.
As I am a deaf person with speech impaired, you would think there would be communications difficulties between myself as a photographer, and her as the model. But despite the difficulties, we did get on very well, and had done the photo-shoot without problems. LadyArtist later left a positive review on my PurplePort account.
Sadly she passed away about two years after this photo-shoot, and I was not aware of this until another two years after her passing away, when I saw a memorial message on her profile on the model booking website.
She was a really great model, I had a great time working with her.
Notice: If the photo-shoot was done around the models’ homes, or done at my home, then for safety and privacy, the geotag is removed, and the photos will not be put on the map.
About Dorothy Perkins.
In 1909, it was founded under the original name of H. P. Newman & Co, in Leeds, United Kingdom, as a drapery shop. It was later said to be a straw hat manufacturer, as the details is not very well recorded.
By 1916, they changed the trading name to Dorothy Perkins, and they opened as a specialist ladies’ outfitters shop in 1919. Over the years, they adverted themselves as specialist in millinery, lingerie, corsets, and hosiery. They also adverted selling ladies’ hats.
The company opened a chain of shops centred in London, and by 1939, they had about 75 shops, and the company grew thanks to Alan Farmer who joined in 1925, and took over in 1940.
The company was floated on the stock exchange market in 1958, and by that time, they had 130 shops, as well as expanding the range of ladies’ wear.
Alan Farmer continued to expand the company in the 1960s, by the end of the decade, they grew to 275 outlets, including a 70% shares in the boutique company called Bibi.
During the 1970s, the company was bought by the Burton Group plc, later became known as the Arcadia Group Ltd, which was owned by Tina Green, the wife of Philip Green.
Arcadia Group went into administration around November 2020, and later the brand, but not the shops, was bought by Boohoo, and is now an online shopping website.

As you pass from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway One will once again split off and head up the coast. The first beach you come to is a small but lovely little beach known as Muir Beach. Houses line the northern cliffs just above a small stream that feeds into the sea. The southern edge of the beach is lined with large boulders that protrude from the surf. As winter storms breach the sand between the creek and the sea, Pacific Wild Salmon swim upstream to spawn underneath towering redwoods.
Because the Muir Beach is so near San Francisco and is a smallest beaches, about a thousand feet from end to end, it is often crowded making it a somewhat difficult beach for shooting seascapes. But if you take your time and don't mind houses lighting the northern cliffs, you can get some remarkable sunsets. Sunsets facing south pick up the light from San Francisco and can add to or ruin a sunset.
Muir Beach is also a gateway for great vistas of the Pacific via trails that travel south along the coastal foothills into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The coastal trails travel the full 17 or so miles to the Golden Gate Bridge over a number of steep hills and ravines.

A Westenaire trick rider takes a lap around the arena at the National Western Stock Show - Denver, CO
for Project: Panning/Motion Blur
First visit to the Stock Show. Lots and lots of cattle. We were lucky enough to get good seats at one of the shows featuring the Westernaires, a riding group with a long history in Denver and who we see practicing every weekend about a block away from our house.
Lighting was a challenge in the arena and some artistic license was taken to help the image fit the project better.

After the light house lighting it was early...it gets dark so quick now. Me and a few other night shooters Andy Frazer , Lisa , and Anne headed back to a hidden cove we tried to shoot in September first foggy atttempts to be seen here but got "grey balled" by the fog and clouds, as Chaybert so aptly puts it.
Some massive amount of seaweed had made its way onto the rocks and shore here. It was like walking on a giant carpet. Very strange indeed.
There is a definite dissatisfaction in seeing a compressed jpeg uploaded when a strong gradient is present. The tiff is so smooth and transitions evenly.....here and in the large version the color banding takes away from the effect I think....I guess you'll have to use your imagination ;)
This shot is dedicated to Anne...and all the nefarious deeds that were running through her mind in the dark!

Sorry ‘bout that. You may uncover your eyes now.
It’s midnight and in a couple of hours I’ll be sitting in my car on my way north, to my home town and our summer cottage. It’s time to say goodbye to summer, to the summer life. It’s the ending of the summer cottage season, and goes by different names in different areas of Finland. Up where I’m from, we call it Venetsialaiset, in the south it’s called “the night of the ancient fires”. It’s the feast of water, fire and light. Every inch of the coast will be covered in lights, bonfires and lanterns. The sky will be filled with fireworks going off everywhere. It’s one of the most beautiful nights of the whole year. The dark evening, the water sparkling and reflecting all the lights and if one is lucky, great weather too, with people sitting on the beaches, laughing and enjoying themselves.
The preparations start way before it gets dark. From early morning on you can hear the sounds of bangers going off everywhere. The kids are usually impatient and start the shooting way too early, especially the boys. Oh, I can remember when I was very little and those big big bangers were still allowed… I was so afraid of the loud sounds, while my younger brother (3 years old at the time) could not keep his hands off the delicious booming things. There he stood with my dad in the yard, with a big smile on his face as they ignited bomb after bomb, while I sat with my grandma on the steps to the sauna, covering my ears with my hands.
You also have to make the lanterns before it gets dark. It has always been the task of the grandchildren and grandpa, whisking around sawdust and tearing old fabric into smaller pieces while grandpa makes sure the packages are covered with all kinds of oily leftovers he can find in his stash. And then, you carry all the black pots to the shore, lay them on stones and piers. Await for dusk. One by one the cottages around us put their fires ablaze, excitement is in the air. The darkening evening and the united effort of creating a sea of light, to celebrate the memory of the summer gone. People jump from stone to stone, alighting, making everything work. “Ah, the Mäki’s are starting to get their lanterns out”, “oh yes, the Jansson’s are always first”, “look, the Savolainen’s have one huge bonfire!”.
I remember the frantic feelings one had as a child, as the evening grew darker, as I almost succumbed to the excitement, running to the shore and back, almost shivering and jumping up and down “when is it time to start shooting the fireworks, when?!” Magic. While the kids are in charge of the lanterns on the shore (and get to do something with that adrenaline rush flooding their veins) the adults stay up at the house, lighting small lanterns on the terrace, flickering lights to guide us to our bed when the night is over.
And then the fireworks. The fireworks… Will it work or not? Will the wind screw everything up and make the rocket fly straight to the other side and into the arms of the people on that cottage? One never knows. We usually have a semi-competition with the said cottage on the other side of the quite narrow sound. Judge each others tries with the heavenly fires, clap or buu appropriately, whistle and comment. One year when it was exceptionally still, no wind et al, we could here them over the sound, muttering “the Nygård’s won again…”.
We’ll see how it goes this year. My dear grandpa isn’t in the best shape, so I don’t know if we’ll be making any lanterns (yeah, I will always be counted as one of the kids in that regard, luckily, making lanterns with grandpa is one of “our things”). Maybe we’ll have to do with the ones you can buy in the stores. Luckily, the weather forecast says no rain, but it’ll be darn cold. +12’C during the day, nearer to +5 in the evening and during the night. Better pack the woollen undies then, ey.
Where this celebration comes from then? Well, one theory is, that it is the remnant of the old signal fires they used to burn along the coast in the old days, even all the way back to Viking raids. With the fires people warned each other for upcoming attacks and also later, led people home from the sea. They were chains of warning as well as chains of welcome.
So that's my weekend.
I hope yours will be just as great! :)
Yesterday I went and did a shoot for a friend who is selling their house. They wanted interior and exterior shots for the website and For Sale Placard. Here is a sample of the shots that I took of their rather lovely Queenslander style house. Lighting was an issue as a lot of the rooms were quite dark, so I used the flash and bounced it off the ceiling to get an overall nice finish to the shots. I would be interested to know what you think. : ) Car

Was a nice relaxing hour or so of reading a book before the sunset came around. Love the Opera house lighting.

It's spring and California's golden poppies are in bloom. This one came from my sister's house.
Lighting: A three light setup. Two Yongnuo strobes in soft boxes in front of the flower on either side. Back lighting is from a 3rd flash in a Rogue grid behind the flower on the right side. The strobes, in manual mode, were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N.
I've photographed a lot of plants and flowers, because they're all around us, work cheap, and never complain. I have an album of these images with over 1100 pictures, and for each one, I have described how I lit them, in case you're interested in that kind of thing.

My specimen photos are taken using this setup. The base is a block of wood from the offcut bin of a hardware store that sells kitchen worktops. The camera is attached directly to a BPM focus rail, which is mounted on a tripod quick-release plate, screwed to the base through another small piece of wood. The rail allows me to move the camera and coarse focus it. At the other end of the table is the specialist equipment: a Proxxon KT 70 table, screwed to the base. This is a low-cost alternative to linear actuators or stacking rails: one turn of the handle moves the table 1 mm. The divisions on the dial are 0.05 mm, so by moving to half way between each one I take frames at 0.025 mm intervals, which is narrow enough for most whole-insect photos I take. Smaller intervals are possible with smaller movements of the handle, but they are not easy to measure. This idea came from John Hallmen: you can see his setup here. Without his advice, I would not have been able to do any of this, so thank you to John and to Nikola Rahme; two people whose photos I greatly admire and who have shared their techniques freely on flickr.
A SIlverline Helping Hands is mounted on the Proxxon table. The crocodile clip holds a piece of plastazote in its jaws; I stick the specimen's pin into the plastazote and try to get it in the same plane as the camera sensor. This is fiddly: a vertical setup would be easier for this, but it would need better handiwork skills than I have. A heavy granite base would also make for a more stable setup, as would a concrete floor instead of a wooden one, but there is nothing I can do about that in my house.
Lighting comes from a flourescent tube desk lamp. The lamp would not hold itself in the right position, so I broke it off from its stand and I held it in a clamp stand instead. I use a simple cylinder of greaseproof paper as a diffuser: this is just pushed on to the end of the lens. To help get a more even light I have a sheet of kitchen foil as a reflector opposite the lamp. I also fix on the camera a 26mm stepping ring with foil over the front, another idea from John Hallmen, explained here.
I have tried other lighting, such as using two Ikea lamps (like the one that carries the foil in the picture above), each with a plastic cup over it to act as a diffuser. But the setup shown here is the one I have come to prefer.
I use Zerene Stacker for the stacking, with DMap as my main image, retouched from the PMax image where the detail is lost in the DMap. Then the image is edited in GIMP before getting a posting here.
No. 69 of 114 pictures in 2014 - White on White.
Having tried a project like this before under normal house lighting, I quickly learned it's not a way to keep your whites white. I'm sure natural is the best way to do this, but I wanted to experiment any way, so I light painted this with a torch in a dark room, using a 5 sec exposure. I got a variety of effects, including great depth and detail in the paper and all the dust on the mouse! I got a few interesting reflective effects, but as this was closest to what I was trying to achieve, this is the submission.
Oh, and this was my first ever picture using a tripod! Very nice one it is too, don't know why I didn't use it before now.
