Electrical Wholesaler Founded 1903 by Mr Alfred Berkeley. Capital £150.00
Offices in Guildhall Buildings, Birmingham.
Alfred Gamble joined firm as Chief Clerk in 1905. He had formerly been apprenticed with Berkeley at Veritys.
Deliveries were made by handcart locally, or by rail over a wide area, supplying Electrical Contractors and large industrial users from Northampton to Stoke-on-Trent. The handcart was pushed at times by Walter Lewis, who worked in his youth for Walter Brothers and became the first Chairman of the M.E.B.
Alfred Berkeley became associated with Fred Horrocks in 1910 in the firm of Walter Horrocks, the makers of the first automatic Country House Lighting Plant. This became Austinlite after the 1914/1918 war.
In 1910, Berkeleys became the first Factor in the Country for Bill products.
1919 - New premises were taken at 111, Granville Street. Deliveries were now made by motorbike and sidecar.
1920 - Expanded business made a van necessary. The first van was a Model T Ford. Berkeleys were distributors of "Conference", later to be called Elma Lamps.
1925 - Berkeleys became agents for Enfield Cable. supplying other Wholesalers. When E.W.F. was formed, Berkeleys joined.
1926 - Alfred Berkeley died, aged 49.
1927 - Fred Horrocks bought the business and formed Ltd Company. Fred Horrocks and Alfred Gamble formed the Board of Directors. Ken Randall joined the Company. He was nephew of Alfred Berkeley.
1939 - The war was a great setback for the Company which struggled through with small staff and became very run down, with both Directors suffering bad health.
1945 - With Fred Horrocks health declining and Alfred Gamble ready to retire, Wilfred Horrocks joined the Company and in 1946 took over from Alfred Gamble, who then retired to Weston-super-Mare.
1947 - Ken Randall was made a Director and maintained regular contact with customers. The building, 111, Granville Street, was bought at the end of a 20 year lease. Fred Louth returned form war service. He had been employed from 1937, after working for G.E.C. Leicester Branch, after earlier emplotment at Gent &Co.
1949 - Fred Horrocks died.
1967 - Ken Randall retired because of bad health. He moved to Perth, Australia where his health improved.
1971 - Cowan, de Groot made A. Berkeley a part of their Group, appointing Eddie Ridge (my Father) to take over from Wilf Horrocks on his retirement in 1973.

Shot hand-held with a Sony NEX7 and the SEL50. Wide open, and with OSS engaged to enable a slow shutter. The SEL50 offers a nicely defocused background at f2 and the OSS easily holds the subject (albeit a stationary subject) at this shutter, 3 or even 4 stops from the usual handheld limits. Lighting here was a mix of distant house lighting and even more distant skylight -- only a combination of higher ISO, open aperture and OSS assisted long shutter speed saved this from being a strobe shot.
Shot RAW and tweaked in ACR -- some reduction in clarity, boosting of the shadow levels and cropping to further isolate the subject.

Offices in Guildhall Buildings, Birmingham.
Alfred Gamble joined firm as Chief Clerk in 1905. He had formerly been apprenticed with Berkeley at Veritys.
Deliveries were made by handcart locally, or by rail over a wide area, supplying Electrical Contractors and large industrial users from Northampton to Stoke-on-Trent. The handcart was pushed at times by Walter Lewis, who worked in his youth for Walter Brothers and became the first Chairman of the M.E.B.
Alfred Berkeley became associated with Fred Horrocks in 1910 in the firm of Walter Horrocks, the makers of the first automatic Country House Lighting Plant. This became Austinlite after the 1914/1918 war.
In 1910, Berkeleys became the first Factor in the Country for Bill products.
1919 - New premises were taken at 111, Granville Street. Deliveries were now made by motorbike and sidecar.
1920 - Expanded business made a van necessary. The first van was a Model T Ford. Berkeleys were distributors of "Conference", later to be called Elma Lamps.
1925 - Berkeleys became agents for Enfield Cable. supplying other Wholesalers. When E.W.F. was formed, Berkeleys joined.
1926 - Alfred Berkeley died, aged 49.
1927 - Fred Horrocks bought the business and formed Ltd Company. Fred Horrocks and Alfred Gamble formed the Board of Directors. Ken Randall joined the Company. He was nephew of Alfred Berkeley.
1939 - The war was a great setback for the Company which struggled through with small staff and became very run down, with both Directors suffering bad health.
1945 - With Fred Horrocks health declining and Alfred Gamble ready to retire, Wilfred Horrocks joined the Company and in 1946 took over from Alfred Gamble, who then retired to Weston-super-Mare.
1947 - Ken Randall was made a Director and maintained regular contact with customers. The building, 111, Granville Street, was bought at the end of a 20 year lease. Fred Louth returned form war service. He had been employed from 1937, after working for G.E.C. Leicester Branch, after earlier emplotment at Gent &Co.
1949 - Fred Horrocks died.
1967 - Ken Randall retired because of bad health. He moved to Perth, Australia where his health improved.
1971 - Cowan, de Groot made A. Berkeley a part of their Group, appointing Eddie Ridge (my Father) to take over from Wilf Horrocks on his retirement in 1973.

Amsterdam canal with bikes on bridge and row houses. Lighting was difficult (shooting into the sun) for a realistic rendering but I loved the composition....so I processed it with exaggerated colors and tone mapping with Photomatix. RAW exposure Nikon D7100 processed in Apple Aperture.

Alfred Gamble joined firm as Chief Clerk in 1905. He had formerly been apprenticed with Berkeley at Veritys.
Deliveries were made by handcart locally, or by rail over a wide area, supplying Electrical Contractors and large industrial users from Northampton to Stoke-on-Trent. The handcart was pushed at times by Walter Lewis, who worked in his youth for Walter Brothers and became the first Chairman of the M.E.B.
Alfred Berkeley became associated with Fred Horrocks in 1910 in the firm of Walter Horrocks, the makers of the first automatic Country House Lighting Plant. This became Austinlite after the 1914/1918 war.
In 1910, Berkeleys became the first Factor in the Country for Bill products.
1919 - New premises were taken at 111, Granville Street. Deliveries were now made by motorbike and sidecar.
1920 - Expanded business made a van necessary. The first van was a Model T Ford. Berkeleys were distributors of "Conference", later to be called Elma Lamps.
1925 - Berkeleys became agents for Enfield Cable. supplying other Wholesalers. When E.W.F. was formed, Berkeleys joined.
1926 - Alfred Berkeley died, aged 49.
1927 - Fred Horrocks bought the business and formed Ltd Company. Fred Horrocks and Alfred Gamble formed the Board of Directors. Ken Randall joined the Company. He was nephew of Alfred Berkeley.
1939 - The war was a great setback for the Company which struggled through with small staff and became very run down, with both Directors suffering bad health.
1945 - With Fred Horrocks health declining and Alfred Gamble ready to retire, Wilfred Horrocks joined the Company and in 1946 took over from Alfred Gamble, who then retired to Weston-super-Mare.
1947 - Ken Randall was made a Director and maintained regular contact with customers. The building, 111, Granville Street, was bought at the end of a 20 year lease. Fred Louth returned form war service. He had been employed from 1937, after working for G.E.C. Leicester Branch, after earlier emplotment at Gent &Co.
1949 - Fred Horrocks died.
1967 - Ken Randall retired because of bad health. He moved to Perth, Australia where his health improved.
1971 - Cowan, de Groot made A. Berkeley a part of their Group, appointing Eddie Ridge (my Father) to take over from Wilf Horrocks on his retirement in 1973.
