Now wyed and heading west on the main, Iowa Interstate QJ 6988 moves towards the Homestead engine shops where it will tie up for the night, bringing to a close a very successful weekend of excursions. For the last bit of their run today, the crew put on a nice smoke show despite having nothing to pull and almost nowhere to go.

The 100+ landmark house that is still withstanding time nestled in Kansas was once home to my grandfather who said it never was once painted.

a mojave desert sunset and an old stone homestead near Hinkley, Calif. on highway 58.

it's been years since i shot this - never have time to stop when going this way and that. but the light was getting low, traveling companion barstowsteve had never seen this location so since we were close we stopped.

From a bygone era, this homestead still stands at Murchison South in Victoria, Australia. It forms part of the the Days Mill and farm and is the best preserved 19th century flour mill in Victoria and a remarkably intact heritage site.

Ran across this wonderful old homestead in the Smoky Hills of Kansas. A few weeks ago, it sits off the road a ways. So I grabbed the Pentax K30 with the trespassing lens to make this image.

I wonder how many people were born, grew up in, lived and died in this house?

My mouth dropped to my feet when I spotted this beautiful place on a lonely gravel road this summer. I couldn't take my eyes off it. I called the gage county historical society and gave them locations because I just knew this place had to have some history. The lady identified the place as the Frank and Anna Hagemeier homestead built at the turn of the century. She even gave me b/w pix of what it used to look like after it was built. It was truely a beauty. Now it sits in shambles, a shell of its former self. This is my dream house.

This is view from my place across the creek into the Upper Lightning Creek Pasture south of Lance Creek WY and north of Manville WY.

Within this photo are ten homesteads, representing the hopes and dreams of ten famillies. All dead and buried.

Also as I look at this photo I am reminded of favored ponies, broncs, fat cattle, good meals, shade trees, abandoned ranches, deer hunting, wild horse herds, brandings, building fence, and a couple of murders.

This is a place that a multitude of children from more several generations exsplored.

As I look, I also think of Grandparents, dad, aunts and uncles & neighbors.

This is a land of lightning strikes, booming thunder, flash floods, hot sun, freezing blizzards, balmy days and rainbows.

I wanted to upload this ages ago but the roofline was off even with my 28/2.8. But I'm trying out Bibble, whose lens correction satisfies my need for overhead plumbity.

I found this abandoned homestead overtaken by moss along Highway 128 along the Navarro River in California.

This is a view through the window of the "Shane Cabin" I posted a few days ago. The cabin became famous when it was used in the movie "Shane", but it was originally the Luther Taylor Homestead, established in 1916. Besides the main cabin, there are ruins of two other log structures.

Notice the marks in the logs. The rounded logs were flattened with an ax and covered with newspaper for insulation then whitewashed and covered with decorative wallpaper.

In 1948 the cabins were sold to rancher Andy Chambers and his son Roy, who rented them out for a couple of years. The cabin had been vacant for awhile when it was used in the 1953 movie Shane and has been abandoned since then.

I appreciate the favorable response to the two photos of this cabin. To see a little more, you can visit my blog: rosswalkerphotos.blogspot.com/2018/06/the-shane-cabin.html

Late 1980's

The day before yesterday (6 February 2014) was a day of huge responsibility! My youngest daughter wanted (i.e. desperately wanted!) to see her very first Snowy Owl. So, off we went, SE of the city. I took her to various areas where Snowy Owls had been seen on 25 January, when I went there with friends and we saw 8 Snowy Owls and 8 Great Horned Owls. Nothing, absolutely nothing! All we managed to find was a flock of Horned Larks and a handful of Ravens. If nothing else, my daughter has now seen just how difficult it usually is to find a Snowy : ) Of course, we were happy to stop and photograph a number of old barns and homesteads during the day, including this very distant one, that we couldn't get closer to, so I had to use 48x zoom. The very distant, magnificent Rocky Mountains were always in view over the golden stubble fields. Four or five hours later, we called in at the Saskatoon Farm on the way home and drowned our disappointment in a delicious meal, ha. Their food is so good! A most enjoyable day, even if we didn't see a Snowy.

I was out in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. Actually the southeast side.

I love to take photos of windmills, and the homestead being there just made it better. There was a herd of pronghorns by them, but they were a bit skittish when I stopped.

I'm finding that drives on backroads I've never been on to be a great method of social distancing. I found this abandoned gem somewhere east of Airdrie, Alberta and getting a decent shot of is was kind of challenging. Lots of power lines and towers litter the landscape here - especially from the best vantage points to capture the house.
