Theme Of The Week - Environmental Portrait
My dad has always enjoyed doing house repairs. When he isn't doing his real job, he is always fixing something.
My basement has always leaked rain water. But it reached maximum capacity this March with all the torrential rain. The last people who lived here, sprayed Drylok (waterproof paint) on the walls. It only lasts for about 5 years and the water was getting trapped between the paint and brick, making a smelly moldy mess that stank up the whole house for 4 months. We hired a company to waterproof it with the plastic sheeting, but before that happens the walls have to smooth and as paint free as possible (paint is a food source for the mold).
Here, my dad is grinding off a lumpy chunk of brick.

Theme Of The Week - I made this
My house is over 100 years old, and was built with no closets (as people owned very few clothes back then and a wardrobe was sufficient storage). So when my Dad and I remodeled the kitchen, we fashioned this coat rack. The top stores hats, gloves, and scarves. There are 5 hooks for coats and the seat is storage for shoes. We also used wood off the "cull pile" (the wood that has gouges or is bent, and thus cheaper). That’s the reason for the 3 decorative cutouts in the back.
The previous owners had a dog that they never let out, thus the overwhelming smell of urine. If you ever encounter such a situation, don't steam-clean the carpet. It is a waste of money and the smell just comes back because it has seeped through the carpet and into the pad.
Your only hope is to rip out everything.
1. First, put on your green t-shirt. This is vital for success!
2. Rip out everything. Cut it into a manageable size, roll it up, tie with a bit of twine, and put it out for the trash [do this on an extremely hot day if you don't like your neighbors ;) ].
3. In my house, the dog had peed so much that the masonite they had used as sub-flooring was saturated too. Cut this up and throw it out.
4. Put on a pair of cheap, rubber flip-flops. You are going to step in drips of the polyurethane mixture. It is unavoidable. The flip-flops allow for quick removal when leaving the room, so as not to track it around the house and ruin the other floors.
5. Mix one part paint thinner and one part polyurethane; this mixture allows it to soak in deeper. Cover the entire offending area and then some. After that dries, cover with a coat of pure polyurethane. Make sure to open the windows; huffing fumes is bad!
6. Once it is dry, you can cover it with the flooring of your choice.
Theme Of The Week - "Get Your Freak On"
Now I am homeless. I can't stay at my new house yet because the dog pee smell has been replace by polyurethane smell. We went to pick up the carpet for the living room today, but just as we got to the store, it started to downpour rain. You can't exactly drive around town with a 12 foot roll of carpet on top of your truck in the rain and horrendous wind gusts. Hopefully we will be able to get it tomorrow. Then the guys have to come to measure the stairs and the bedroom.
My dad and uncle want to paint all the walls too; to get rid of the nicotine smell...
Too many decisions!!

Chez Satellite™
This is the first and only picture you will see of the radiators in my house. They are incredibly uncomfortable. About four hours after this, we ripped all of them out.
We drained them all last night. and when we took them apart, the leftover water came out. It was black like ink and smelled like hot tuna.
They still work (and are now smell free!), however the boiler was bad, so if anyone in the St. Louis area would like to buy them, let me know (picture in comments). $75 each. They are vintage Victorian/Art Nouveau. They weigh about 200 lbs each (that's why they are local delivery only; but if you really want them, I am sure we can work something out). I have short ones for under windows and regular height. They can be repainted with special radiator paint.

Misha got her summer hair cut, but she is being rather surly at the moment...
Picture from June 20.
We ripped up the carpet in my bedroom and the stairs. Then we coated the floors with polyurethane (to seal the wood and stop the dog pee smell from the previous owners). Then it was 4:30 and my Dad was all like, "We have to hurry. We are going to be late to the restaurant!" So we started down the stairs, which, by the way, were still wet from the polyurethane. My Dad said, "Be careful; it is slick."
Needless to say, I fell down this section of the stairs. The last time I fell down a flight of stairs, my Mom warned me that it was slick too.
I landed on my back (see picture 342) and bruised it up. I also cut up my elbow which was also covered with polyurethane. I had to rub paint thinner on the open cut.

Feeling artsy-fartsy in my kitchen. Right after this, my dad and I ripped out the rest of the drywall.
Done with a fan, 3 safety pins, and a bit of string (MacGyver style)
Theme Of The Week - Blown Away
Putting up the new cabinets in my kitchen...
it's hard to make things straight and level when none of the walls are straight!
I guess this is the kind of face I make when I realize that I've spent a fortune packing my car full of new Ikea stuff...
btw, hydropneumatic suspension with height adjustment is a blessing when loading boatloads of heavy stuff, note how nicely the car sinks to the ground!
Updated! The sink wall was replaced so everything could hang flat. Ken and I designed the new bathroom from scratch. (We love you so much, Floor and Decor!)
And check out that swiveled-around toilet! Whaaaat?!
What you can't see in the picture: The medicine cabinet. It's pretty cool. Two mirror doors that open to a large cabinet with multiple shelves. And the vanity has two long drawers. So, while there was no storage space before, the new version has plenty of room for cleaning supplies, bottles, and 'unmentionables'. And that's a new Jacuzzi tub.
