Mount's Bay is a large, sweeping bay on the English Channel coast of Cornwall, stretching from the Lizard Point to Gwennap Head. In the north of the bay, near Marazion, is St Michael's Mount, the origin of the name of the bay. Though it looks to summer visitors like a large, benign, scenic, natural harbour, in an onshore winter gale it presents a great danger to shipping and a "maritime trap", especially for sailing ships. There are more than 150 known wrecks from the nineteenth century in the area.
St Michael's Mount, is the most famous of Cornwall's landmarks. Originally the site of a Benedictine Chapel, the spectacular castle on the rock dates from the 14th Century. The St Aubyn family created a stunning garden with pathways that wind their way up to the main entrance of the mount through carefully planted slopes that feature many sub-tropical species.
Now in the care of the National Trust, the Mount's castle and gardens are open to the public during weekdays from April to October, and most weekends.
Access is on foot across the causeway at low tide, or by a short ferry crossing at high tide.
Welcome to the first outdoor ice cream of the year. Or perhaps something that is not allowed to advertise?
A half a day trip from Phnom Penh to the 17th-19th century Cambodian capital Oudong took us thousands of steps up the prominent Phnom Oudong on top of which stand the royal stupa graves. This newer and more architecturally impressive white stupa on the way to the ancient tombs, is said to house relics from Buddha himself, although it appears to only rarely open to the public. The exterior decorations and details are nonetheless impressive.

St Mawes is the principal village on the Roseland Peninsula, in South Cornwall, and is situated on the mouth of the Percuil River which flows into the Carrick Roads. An immense natural harbour, which is often claimed to be the third largest in the world, was created after the Ice Age from an ancient valley which flooded as the ice melted, causing the sea level to rise dramatically.
An important port in medieval times, it now serves as a popular tourist location, with many properties in the town functioning as holiday accommodation. The village is also a centre for a range of water sports activities and offers two fine sandy beaches, a range of pubs, cafes and restaurants, and some interesting shops and galleries.
A year-round ferry provides a service to Falmouth, which is less than a mile away by boat, but due to its proximity to the Fal estuary it is some 30 miles (48 km) away by road.
[Huangshan, Anhui, China] Huangshan / Yellow mountain neverending stairs and steps, an ideal hike by the edge of the mountain cliff, a historical mountain path by the canyon inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site, and with good reason: Huangshan is the one mountain and natural landscape that travelers should not miss on a trip to China.

My last post of 2017. Where did that year go?
A rare and perfect day. Hot, sunny, a blue sky with the occasional fluffy white cloud, and I had the day off work! My first trip to this lovely village on the South Cornish coast coincided with low tide. I had the notion that these boats would look better with a little water lapping around them, so I went for a potter around the harbour and coastal path and got this shot on the way back – along with damp feet of course!
Portscatho lies in the South-westerly corner of Gerrans Bay on the Roseland peninsula. The East-facing cove affords shelter from the prevailing south westerly winds and this meant it was ideal as a base for the pilchard fleets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is still, although on a much smaller scale, an active fishing port today. The same shelter makes for safe swimming and its proximity to many fine sandy beaches means it’s a family favourite.
Cawsand is a small fishing village, which, along with its neighbour Kingsand, was once synonymous with smuggling. Both villages are now part of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, on the Rame Peninsula, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Set in a sheltered location, backed by woodland, overlooking Plymouth Sound, the beach, faces east, and is predominantly sand and shingle with some rock pools to explore at low tide.

Afro-Colombian girls, dressed in the traditional ‘palenquera’ costume, pose for a picture in front of a colonial house in walled city of Cartagena, Colombia. With the peace agreement, ending a 52-year civil conflict and promising political stability, together with rapid economic growth and unexploited tourism potential, Colombia has truly become a holiday destination. Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the tropical Caribbean coast, plays the primary role in Colombia’s tourism renaissance. The historic sites from the Spanish colonial times are being restored, private investments are visible throughout the city and an increased number of local people benefit from the boom of the travel related services. © Jan Sochor Photography

Positioned in a small valley on the more sheltered westerly side of the river Camel, Padstow became a thriving fishing port and later trading port.
In the time of Elizabeth 1st it was already a bustling little port of fishermen and boat-builders, but in the 16th and 17th centuries Padstow's growth accelerated. This was partly as a result of the 1496 bridge in Wadebridge which prevented boats from passing further up the river. In 1536 harbour construction began in earnest with the first stone pier being constructed. The growth of the mining and quarrying industry in the area established Padstow as a major port town. Copper ore was shipped to Bristol and slates exported, many from the Delabole slate quarry a few miles inland.
During the 19th century, with the pilchard industry at its height, and shipbuilding becoming a major industry, the port flourished with 6 yards producing ships at one point.
Tourism arrived in Padstow with the railway in 1899, with the ' Atlantic Express ' running a regular service between London and Padstow. Since then the town has never looked back and although the fishing industry still survives, there is little doubt that today its main industry is tourism
The harbour is filled with pleasure boats of all descriptions, and the local fishermen supply the many fish restaurants which have recently become a major feature of the town.
One from when the days were a bit longer.
Looe is the second largest fishing port in Cornwall, supporting a fleet of trawlers, potters and netters together with an expanding number of hand-line fishermen.
The majority of the Looe fleet consists of day boats, meaning they go to sea and return each day, ensuring that their fish is fresh and of the highest quality (slush-ice bins are carried on board even the smallest boats).
Fish are landed at the market throughout the day and are stored in refrigerators until the next auction, beginning at 6.00am on weekdays.

Ancient 11th century Hindu stone temple ruins on the top of Phnom Chisor, a holy hill in the countryside of Takeo province, Cambodia. In the nearby new Buddhist temple a sad sight: a monkey chained to a pole in clear distress. The reason I was told: "The monkey keeps trespassing the temple property and making a mess." I couldn't help to wonder if the monkey would agree with that narrative.

Winter temperatures going down to at least -2°C, Christmas at the Madison Square Park in Manhattan, New York is something you can't resist. Tall Christmas trees with lines of light bulbs and decorations all over the city will clearly put you in an "Oh wow! what a beautiful Christmassy place to be," kind of vibe.

Surrounded by magnificent vineyards the grounds of Castle Spiez extend along the eponymous bay of Lake Thun. The Castle’s present-day church dates in style from the early Romanesque period and was built around the year 1000.

This has got to be the most photographed spot in Banff National Park. Just off the main highway and near one of the two exits to Banff. To me it is such an iconic location, the scenery is just stunning, especially at sunset.

Windermere, Cumbria
The Lake District, also commonly known as #TheLakes, is a mountainous region in #NorthWestEngland. A popular #holidaydestination, it is famous not only for its lakes, forests, and mountains (or #fells), but also for its associations with the early nineteenth-century poetry and writings of #WilliamWordsworth and the other Lake Poets.
Historically shared by the counties of #Cumberland, #Westmorland and #Lancashire, the #LakeDistrict now lies entirely within the modern county of #Cumbria. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including #ScafellPike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England, #Wastwater and #Windermere, respectively.

The Banff Springs Hotel is a luxury hotel that was built during the 19th century as one of Canada's grand railway hotels located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The hotel was opened to the public on June 1, 1888.
The hotel is located within a spectacular setting in the Rocky Mountains, just above the Bow Falls, close to thermal springs. The main view from the hotel is across the valley and toward Mount Rundle.
Banff Springs Hotel is also reputedly haunted. Stories suggest a woman dressed in her wedding gown lost her life on the staircase. There were candles on the staircase when the bride was walking up them, when suddenly her dress caught fire, in a panic she tripped and fell down the stairs, dying from a broken neck. Many people have reported seeing her ghost in full wedding gown, often dancing in the ballroom
This was taken at first light in the morning...
