And oh dear, what a sunburst! At first the sunrise looked promising but at sunrise time the clouds were covering the horizon so the light was quite dim. But suddenly, for like 10 minutes the sun managed to peek through the clouds and cover the whole wintry scenery in perfect golden light. That was a great sunrise, could not have been any better!
Somehowe waiting in -15°C for about an hour was quite ok, but honestly I was wearing all layers of clothes I had available. How do people in the Arctic survive?
To be prepared I mounted my Filters (in this case reverse GND) on all lenses before leafing so I only hat to mount the lenses to my Body - a task that can be accomplished even with thick gloves.
Technichal: Nikon D800, AF-S 20/1.8 (great combo), HiTech reverse ND Grad 0.6, Tripod, Gloves.

After quite a long break from sharing photos, I decided to return to one of my favorite recent series, the island portrait series. I find I love this series not only because I love the subject matter, but because this is the first series in which I allowed myself the freedom to process each photo as it needed to be processed. I found that in my past series, I would impose strict requirements on style of the end result, expecting the final image to look a certain way. With this series, I decided instead to focus on consistency of subject matter and allow the processing to adapt as I saw fit.
This shot came from my trip in May to Korea where one of the stops was the rather beautiful and photographic target-rich island of Ulleungdo. It's basically the top of an ancient sea volcano, and as such, has huge amounts of volcanic rocks both on land and just off shore. There are even three very famous rocks, each with their own names—this is one of them (but of course the name escapes me).
Originally, this frame was not one of my keepers; I had flagged another view of the same islet, but after working on it, I realized that I didn't really like the composition. Going back through I found this composition and decided to get to work on it. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Because of all of the dark tones, it's best to view large to see all of the detail, of which there's quite a lot thanks to the nice cross lighting that I was able to get in this early morning shot.

Well this was just about the end of one of the best days out I have had in a long time the air was still warm sun was setting fast and I took this LE towards the very end as the Sun dropped.
Met up with Chris (Christolakis) at Cabarita Headland for one of the best sunrises that I have seen for a while - not that we knew that when we got there, as we started out in the dark ;-).
But once the light started to grow stronger we could see that we would be in for a spectacular coloured sunrise! What more can you ask for; Some great company, Nice clouds in the sky and a Beautiful Sunrise. Oh yeah and a nice cup of Nescafe' finest
blend! ;-) ahh well it was hot anyway.

No tienen ningún valor culinario.
It's been a while since I have been back to the beach at Cabarita.
Couldn't see any clouds in the sky when I got up, but decided to go anyway - when I got to the beach it started to sprinkle, as if we haven't had enough rain here lately!
But as the light started to appear, it stopped raining and the clouds started to dissipate showing of the gorgeous colours of the new day!
I Did want to try for a long exposure with the Big Stopper, but didn't have much luck. After the first two and a half minutes of the total exposure of 6 minutes, a rouge wave swirled around the tripod sending it shimmering further down in the sand, so that was aborted. :-) (must admit I thought I had it far enough in the sand, but....... live and learn.)
The second try was too underexposed which was a real shame, as the golden clouds were moving diagonally to the left and the grey clouds were moving diagonally to the right, which did look really cool.... another day me think. I does take a long time with the big stopper, as I've got the noise reduction on - so a 6 minutes exposure becomes to 12 minutes and then the light is gone :-(

Solent "Shanty Town" Sunset
These buildings along the Solent coast are rather unkindly referred to as the "Shanty Town". They are more permanent than wooden beach huts but do not have all mains services connected. Some do not have electricity and rely on gas lighting or solar power and batteries.
However, the owners get to see the raw power of the Solent seas and skies every day of the year.
A superb location for photographers and if you just want to relax and watch the world go by, stop here for a while.
I did use a Formatt HiTech Firecrest ND filter on the sky to emphasise the colours.
We had a heatwave. Then we had a few days of rain and storms and now the high temperatures are returning.

Today was my first day out with my brand new Formatt Hitech Pro ND Fitlers, i have upgraded to a square system becasue i was fed up with the scew in filters!! Too much on and off when im recomposing. So far so good, much easier to alter composition! I purchased the Joel Tjintjelaar set which includes a 3 6 and 10 stop along with the Modular holder and x2 adapter rings.

Photo taken at Pererenan Beach, Canggu, Bali
Pererenan beach is another surfing spot with a selection of villas close by. Navigating your way to Pererenan Beach can be tricky at first, particularly at night, as the whole area is a mixture of Balinese villages that all look alike and rice fields.
Besides Echo Beach, Bali's west coast, Pererenan Beach is an exposed beach and reef break that has dependable surf.

La Défense Study II - Tour EDF, La Défense Paris
As some of you might have noticed my latest 3 or 4 architectural images are different from my previous successful and award winning series from the past few years. Reason: I always try to keep moving, and never stand still, even if it means you have to leave a successful concept.
To quote Mark Twain: to stand still is to fall behind.
I'm not saying I'm going to change and revolutionize the world of architectural fine art photography, absolutely not. I'm just saying I'm changing myself, once again. Subtle but important changes in my view to keep growing and never get bored of myself and my work.
What you see since a few months and what you will see in the future is a combination of the fine art architectural photography I've done for the past few years and the more technical, sterile and conventional architectural photography as we have always known. Changes will grow over time, this photo reflects today's status. If you want to know more and learn about my new architectural direction, my changed artistic approach and much more that keeps the artistic spirit going, then visit our Chicago architectural fine art photography workshop and I will tell you all about it.

A long time since my last architectural image, you might wonder if I'm still doing photography : ) Well, the answer is YES, more than ever, but now that I'm doing it professionally I'm spending time doing a lot more than just working on my images (which I still love more than everything else). Not that I don't like the whole process, it's so very exciting and it suits me like a glove, but you have to know, doing photography as a business is much more than shooting and processing your photos, SO much more!! And you have just one choice, if you want to do your job at a top level, you have to spend time doing all the things around it. That's what I did with the Chicago Workshop, that's what I did with the Athens Workshop that took place this past weekend and was a great success blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/athens-workshop-2013/ ) and that's what I do with all my other activities, be they teaching, mentoring or else.
This is the first image I'm posting from the Chicago workshop, a workshop I did with a great team of photographers and that is still the architectural event of the year. Chicago is a amazing place and has won a big place in my heart. As Frank Lloyd Wright says: "Eventually, I think Chicago will be the most beautiful great city left in the world...” He is right and I'm already looking forward to the moment I'll be back there!
And now, as always from me, a few words about my vision behind this image.
Time, space ...they are just conventions. Living inside them can be just as easy as living outside them and the reality of living outside them can be just as real as the one of relating to them. If you need a proof just try to dream. Who says that dreaming is not a reality? Just as imagination can be reality as well. Who says that the world needs to have a material shape to be real?
Who says that we have to always relate to the same constants that are time and space and not create different times and different spaces that will cover different realities?...
Different from what you were used from me lately, more in line with my older architectural work, it's been a long time since I've showed an entire building in a frame, let alone 5 buildings, but I was thinking for a long time to make a series as the one I'm starting today. If you know me you know I love long exposure, I love motion blur and any kind of blur that can give me the freedom to bypass reality and go where noone else has been. I love the freedom these ways of seeing the world give to my imagination and now I also have a lens that will help me with putting in practice what my mind has already seen a long time ago: The Queen of the Lenses, Her Majesty The T/S Lens. : ) This image is the beginning of a direction I wanted to explore for a long time, architecture as a parallel reality. What I'm always looking for in my architectural images is to find the dream in architecture, in essence to find the soul of the building I'm photographing. I think now I'm closer than even to this soul and I'll show it to you too over the months to come.

Went out for sunrise this morning with My big Bro jimbri378 who hasn't been out with His camera for ages, We decided on Blyth as there was plenty to shoot and He had not done Blyth beach before. We were treated to a fantastic sunrise, it really was on fire this morning, and what do you know, as soon as we hit the beach I spotted this branch so of course the polite thing to do was drag it to the waters edge and take its photo LOL!! Took this shot from the other side of the branch looking down towards Seaton Sluice and St Mary's Island.
There was also a few good lads scattered up the coast so be sure to check out their shots from this morning:
Jim Brightwell at Blyth with Me.
Ed Bookless was up at Newbiggin.
Allan England and Phil Whittaker were at Tynemouth.
Simon Lowe was at St Mary's.
Tom Hill was at Blyth too, but I missed Him.
Jim Thow was at Cullercoats.
Mike Ridley was down Whitby.
Please click on their names to view their shots, there are some stunners!!

Myself and Greg headed down to Brooklyn for our first shoot together in New York City. It turns out that the weather was on our side, so we manage to get a great sunset coupled with some storm clouds. Sadly during the shoot, we got chased off by a park ranger in a massive hat, but we relocated (slightly) and got some decent shots.
This is a blend of two images, one for the water and the lights, and the other for the sky and buildings. If you're interested in learning digital blending, then contact me for skype / email lessons, or I can arrange private or group tutorials in the London area. If you're in another country, keep an eye on where I'm travelling through Facebook and I might be able to teach in your country soon!
