After all this time we have just discovered that Stary Browar has a terrace close to the food court. I think what makes Stary Browar the most interesting mall is that it wasn’t built to be a mall. It used to be a huge brewery which was founded at the beginning of 1900s (stary means old and browar means brewery). The building stayed unused for a long time until they turned it into a shopping mall. The architects kept a lot of the original elements from the old brewery, not just the red bricks, but a lot of functional elements which became decoration like pipes, pulleys, beer tanks and so on. Navigating the mall can be a little bit tricky sometimes but very rewarding as you continue to discover secret passages, terraces, different entrances and shortcuts. So even if you’re not a mall type of person, I would totally recommend visiting it just for the beauty of the architecture.

Shitaya Shrine in Higashi-Ueno, Taito Ward, Tokyo, caught my eye with its elegant curved gable, known as a karahafu, and bright metal fittings that serve both a decorative and protective purpose, shielding key elements from weathering.

Work on the pier has been completed, and this includes the addition of a marina which reputedly cost €11 million and which now provides Sopot with moorings for around 100 yachts, as well as a full support network of chandlers and marina management.

This delightful outdoor museum was the next stop on our road trip to Telemark and back to Sandnes.. The vest-telemark museum is adjacent to Eidsborg Stave Church. In a beautiful forest setting, the old traditional buildings are a fascinating insight to the architecture that is uniquely Norwegian.

I absolutely adore the landscape and forests of southern Norway.

A haunting reminder of the 1990s Bosnian conflict, this photograph captures the French UN base located next to the BHRT (Bosnia and Herzegovina Radio Television) building in the west of Sarajevo during the Siege of Sarajevo. The building, originally designed for civilian purposes, was transformed into a heavily fortified structure as it became an operational base for French UN peacekeepers. Sandbags fill the window openings, reflecting the intense shelling and sniper fire that defined daily life during the siege. This transformation from peacetime architecture to a defensive stronghold exemplifies the concept of “warchitecture”—the adaptation and repurposing of civilian buildings under the duress of conflict. Behind the fortified base, the hills are dotted with tightly packed residential homes, each carrying their own scars from the war. The French flag can be seen flying near the building, a testament to the international presence amidst a deeply local conflict. The image stands as a powerful visual of resilience and survival, documenting a time when the very fabric of Sarajevo was redefined by the war. This site remains a poignant symbol of the city’s endurance and the enduring impact of conflict on urban landscapes.

Architect Thomas U. Walter designed the second of three phases of this building in 1835. An older barn structure is seen in the rear.

Only one other residence is know to have been designed by Walter. who is known as the architect of the dome on the U.S. Capitol building, of the House and Senate wings of the Capitol building and of Girard College.

The Abbey of San Michele della Chiusa, perched atop Mount Pirchiriano, stands on a site of ancient religious significance. According to legend, Saint Michael appeared here in the 4th century, leading to the construction of a sanctuary. The current Romanesque and Gothic abbey, developed from the 10th century onward, became a major pilgrimage destination on the route to Santiago de Compostela and remains a masterpiece of medieval architecture and spiritual tradition.

Discover the haunting beauty of Bosnia’s past with this rare glimpse into January 1996, just after the tumultuous Bosnian War. Amidst the serene snow-covered landscape lies a stark reminder of conflict – a once-sturdy building now stands ravaged by war, its façade pockmarked by shelling and its structure gutted. This poignant image captures not just architecture but history frozen in time.

As you gaze upon this relic from Bosnia’s recent past, you can’t help but be moved by the resilience embedded within these battered walls. The building tells a story of survival against all odds, serving as a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people. Each scar on its surface speaks volumes about the country’s struggle for peace and sovereignty.

The architectural details are somber yet striking – remnants of windows suggest where light once streamed through, while exposed beams hint at former grandeur. It’s an insider’s look at what was lost to war: not just buildings but homes, not just structures but sanctuaries.

This snapshot from January 1996 is more than an image; it’s an invitation to reflect on Bosnia’s journey through devastation towards rebuilding and renewal. It stands as both a memorial to what was endured and a beacon of hope for what can be achieved with courage and unity.

A small monument commemorating the figure of the “Umbrella Man” - an extremely colourful personality, one of the more interesting persons living in Sopot in the years 1960-1990.
