This delightful outdoor museum was the next stop on our road trip to Telemark and back to Sandnes.. The vest-telemark museum is adjacent to Eidsborg Stave Church. In a beautiful forest setting, the old traditional buildings are a fascinating insight to the architecture that is uniquely Norwegian.

CHAPEL OF ST. JAMES-THE-LESS: In its vigorous, harmonious composition, this small funeral chapel is a splendid example of High Victorian Gothic design. Its sense of strength and spirituality is derived from the subtle contrast of its stone walls, enveloping roofs, and soaring spire. The chapel was erected in 1860 to plans by Cumberland and Storm, one of Toronto's leading 19th-century architectural firms. Situated on a slight rise, St. James is enhanced by the picturesque setting of its cemetery, which was opened in 1844 and is the oldest established cemetery in the city. www.stjamescathedral.on.ca/Cemetery/tabid/64/Default.aspx

The Swallow's Nest is a decorative castle located at Gaspra, a small spa town between Yalta and Alupka on the Crimean peninsula, Russia. It was built between 1911 and 1912, on top of the 40-metre-high (130 ft) Aurora Cliff, in a Neo-Gothic design by the Russian architect Leonid Sherwood for a noble with German roots, Pavel Leonardovich von Steingel.

The castle overlooks the Cape of Ai-Todor on the Black Sea coast. The Swallow's Nest is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Crimea, having become the symbol of Crimea's southern coastline.

Although it is only a 20th century creation, Palace Bridge is undoubtedly one of the most famous sights of St. Petersburg, and is quite literally unmissable for most visitors to the city, who will find themselves continually using the bridge to move between Palace Square, home to the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum, and the numerous historic attractions on Vasilevskiy Ostrov.

The history of Palace Bridge dates back to 1901, when a competition for designs for a permanent bridge at the site was announced. Until then, this vital link between two of the oldest sections of the city had been furnished by boat or by a pontoon bridge 50 meters downstream, a legacy of Peter the Great's interdict on bridge-building in his new capital (he believed this would encourage the population to become competent sailors).

It took eight years for the jury to choose a winner. They opted for designs presented by Andrey Pshensitsky, a recent graduate of the St. Petersburg Institute of Communications Engineering. Celebrated Art Nouveau designer and artist Roman Meltzer was commissioned to design the bridge's architectural decorations, and construction eventually began in 1912.

The onset of the First World War severely interfered with the completion of the project, and the eventual opening of Palace Bridge in 1916 was a discrete affair, with most of the decorative elements of the designs incomplete. It was not until 1939, by which time the bridge had been renamed Republican Bridge, that the ornate cast-iron railings and lampposts, the lion sculptures and the bridge's pavilions were eventually completed.

The bridge's original name was returned in 1944, and Palace Bridge has since been fully restored several times since, most recently in 1997. The bridge now carries over 30,000 cars a day, and is the site of some of St. Petersburg's heaviest traffic jams. Nonetheless, views from the bridge - of the Winter Palace, of the Peter and Paul Fortress, and of the rows of palatial buildings along both banks of the Neva - are some of the most impressive in the city.

Casa Cavassa, a refined Renaissance residence in the historic heart of Saluzzo, was transformed in the late 15th century by Marquis Michele Antonio di Saluzzo into an elegant urban palace blending medieval structure with Renaissance elegance. Today home to the Civic Museum Casa Cavassa, it preserves original frescoes, stuccoes, and period furnishings, offering a rare glimpse into the domestic life and artistic tastes of the noble elite in the Marquisate of Saluzzo. Its harmonious courtyard and richly decorated interiors reflect the cultural flourishing of this independent Piedmontese state before its absorption into the Duchy of Savoy.

Turin Cathedral, consecrated in 1500, is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture and the spiritual heart of the city. Commissioned by Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy, it was designed by Meo del Caprina and houses the revered Holy Shroud—a linen cloth believed by many to bear the image of Christ. Though modest in size compared to other cathedrals, its elegant proportions, Renaissance chapels, and intimate atmosphere reflect the deep religious devotion of the House of Savoy. The adjacent Chapel of the Holy Shroud, designed by Guarino Guarini, is a Baroque gem of light and geometry, making the cathedral a unique blend of faith, art, and dynastic symbolism.

The Royal Palace of Venaria, located just outside Turin, was built in 1675 by Duke Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy as a grand hunting lodge and summer residence. A masterpiece of Baroque architecture, it was designed to showcase the power and refinement of the House of Savoy, with vast gardens, opulent halls, and an expansive park. Abandoned and later restored in the 21st century, La Venaria Reale is now one of Italy’s most spectacular cultural landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site, symbolizing both the splendor and resilience of Savoyard heritage.

The James A. Garfield Mausoleum

In the lower level of the Garfield Mausoleum is the crypt which contains the bronze coffins of President Garfield and his wife, Lucretia. The two urns in the rear between the coffins contain the ashes of two other members of the Garfield family, daughter Molly and her husband, both of whom died in the late 1940's.

It is worth pointing out that to see exposed coffins displayed in this manner is rare. It is generally reserved for heads of state to "lie in state" in the Capital. Compare this to the dual sarcophagus of President McKinley and wife at the McKinley Monument in Canton, Ohio: www.flickr.com/photos/zuikosan/2952717299/

Legend has it that President Garfield's ghost sometimes walks the halls and steps of his mausoleum!

The Ford Model TT is a truck made by the Ford Motor Company. It was rated at 1 short ton (0.91 t). It was based on the Ford Model T, but with a heavier frame and rear axle. It was often equipped with an accessory gearbox. Mass production with Ford produced bodies ran from 1925 to 1927, but production of the Model TT had started with the first chassis being released in 1917. It was very durable for the time, but slow when compared to other trucks.

The Royal Palace of Turin, seat of the Dukes and later Kings of the House of Savoy, stands at the heart of the city as a symbol of political power and artistic patronage. Originally a medieval fortress, it was transformed in the 17th century by architects like Carlo di Castellamonte and Guarino Guarini into a magnificent Baroque residence. With its lavish staterooms, grand staircase, and adjacent Royal Armory and Chapel of the Holy Shroud, the palace served as the center of court life and state affairs. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a key part of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, reflecting centuries of dynastic ambition and cultural refinement.

GUM is an abbreviation meaning “Main Universal Store”, from the Russian “Глáвный универсáльный магазѝн”. It is the name of a shopping mall located in central Moscow, just opposite Red Square. The building is a trapezoidal shape, with a steel framework and a glass roof. This made it quite unique at the time of construction, in the 1890s.

The Abbey of San Michele della Chiusa, perched atop Mount Pirchiriano, stands on a site of ancient religious significance. According to legend, Saint Michael appeared here in the 4th century, leading to the construction of a sanctuary. The current Romanesque and Gothic abbey, developed from the 10th century onward, became a major pilgrimage destination on the route to Santiago de Compostela and remains a masterpiece of medieval architecture and spiritual tradition.
