It’s a location I rarely visit and I don’t know why as High Force is only just over an hour away and has so many opportunities for the landscape photographer. I was inspired to revisit with my grandchildren Christmas Eve 2024 after seeing the location featured in a Brian Cox solar system documentary. His visit was in the snow and it looked magical, unfortunately no such conditions were present for the children’s walk but it was great all the same. Fortunately not long after the new year the snow came. It arrived heavy on the Sunday so I headed back first thing Monday morning. I first headed for the viewing gallery on the south side of the river in deep virgin snow, I took a series of photos. I then headed back to the bridge and headed up to below the falls on the north side and took this image which is the same view point as the Brian Cox documentary.

RSPB Titchwell Marsh, Norfolk

As this song by Joseph Arthur is playing while I upload this, Mercedes is fine, especially as they fly so quickly. So far it's been a. good year for my beloved High Brown Fritillaries. they emerged in the last week of May, unheard of. Despite the strong winds and rain I've managed to find a few freshly emerged ones most days. This very fresh male posed nicely, despite the fact the bracken was moving in the strong wind.

An attempt at "High key" photography.

The colours of the Violet-green Swallow are lovely, especially when seen in flight. There were dozens of these guys about at the hatchery.

Situated on the Cromford canal is the old High Peak Railway Junction

High Peak Junction is located on the junction of the Cromford Canal and the High Peak Trail. It is a collection of railway buildings including some of the oldest surviving railway workshops in the world and is within the area of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. There is a visitor centre, small gift and refreshment shop, picnic area and toilets. It is an ideal spot to start or finish a walk along the canal or trail.

Seems a bit silly to have a drift log at the top of a waterfall but there it is . Except the falls are the highest in the North Island at 153 meters called the Wairere Falls just north of Matamata in the Waikato . Which ever way you get here its a effort . A hour and a half STEEP climb from the carpark or we tramped 6 hours over the Kaimai Ranges . Was a warm day too ... thanks to hydration packs . Yay .

The view over the Waikato farmland is just awesome ...
