Pre-sunrise colours, Millstone Edge.

On a clear November day, the morning sun-light poured in to light the Higger Tree, revealing it's fine detail of lichen as it stretched it's arms in the warmth of the sun. The tips of the grasses shone too like a carpet of dancing jewels at the feet of Higger Tor.

I took my better half for a wander in the Derbyshire Peak District last night. The high winds blew most of the clouds away, but also kept the midges at bay. I think she enjoyed the views all the same...

After a three month hiatus from landscape photography I've been back out with the camera. This morning was my third outing over the past week and I got some great conditions on Over Owler Tor. Even on a weekday, there were three other photographers for sunrise. One of which was Alex Hyde. If you don't know of him, check out his work. His macro and landscape work is fabulous. Great to meet him. A real gent.

From a morning on Higger Tor going back a few weeks ago when the mist rolled in and gave way to some patchy light. I imagine it would've been quite a sight if you was on Carl Wark itself. Shortly after the mist won and I headed off back down to my car.

A four shot panoramic stitch from a frosty morning on Higger Tor a couple of Sundays ago. Not one of my faves, but the frost was quite nice.

Higger Tor is a dominant landmark of the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District. It is a gritstone tor overlooking the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast

Sunlight on the rocks of Higger Tor.

Went up to Burbage Rocks with www.73in73.com last night after showing them around Wyming Brook & Padley Gorge in the day.

As we drove from Padley to the top of Burbage we could see in the Hope Valley towards Mam Tor was lit up amazingly with light - some really mad colours as well. I really wanted to head that way but carried on to Burbage as they needed to shoot that location.

We started to walk along the edge and by now we were in the shadows but the clouds and sky continued to amaze us.

I was hoping that the sun would eventually show and cast some light in the foreground but it didn't.

I ended up with this composition - its not a very strong one as the heather has faded and the middle distance is in the shadows... but look at that sky, its something special :)

Please check out www.73in73.com - they only have 12 locations to shoot at the moment and they are out every day between work and whatever the weather.

It was quite windy and rainy when taking these photos.

Had a play about in Lightroom with this one. Taken on 07/10/15 from Burbage Edge, overlooking Higger Tor in rather windy conditions.

double backed from Stanage Edge, descending down past the abandoned millstones and made my way across to Higger Tor. I sat at the Kit Kat stones for a while hoping for some interesting light, however it never happened (I always seem to have the dullest looking skies when I attempt to photograph there) to this end I decided to move on.

A scene I wanted to revisit was the Chris Gilbert composition (front cover: Photographing The Peak District - Fotovue) of Higger Tor shot from Carl Wark, one of a few little studies of set compositions I've begun. Last time I shot this, it was December 2021 during golden hour where browns, oranges and yellows dominated the colour palette. Spring is well underway in High Peak now and the burnt hues are slowly being replaced by vibrant greens and soon to be rich purples when the heather blooms.

The weather worked its magic for me this time, a break in the cloud spilling dappled light onto Higger Tor against the backdrop of a rather threatening sky that thankfully didn't bring with any downpours.

This was the last photograph of the day, my hike back down Burbage valley involved numerous detours around peat bogs, it's never straight forward getting from A to B in the peaks but something about peat bogs complicating what should otherwise be a straight forward quarter mile stretch of land that just irks me! All part of the fun maybe?

Too late to see the heather in full bloom but still a gorgeous place to be on a nice late summer evening

Taken from Higger Tor. I liked the way the light caught the tree line across the hill. It created some lovely contrasts with other hills both in front and behind.
