HMY Britannia was the only ship in the Royal Navy always commanded by a Flag Officer.

Generally, it would have been a Rear Admiral, but in the case of the last Captain, a changed ensued and the vessel was commanded by Commodore, Anthony Morrow.

When Britannia was sailing the oceans, the Officer of the Watch was in charge, ably assisted by The Lookout and Signalman.

The Helmsman was on the deck below, in contact with the bridge by a metal voice pipe.

The Charthouse was to the rear of the bridge, where voyages were planned and plotted.

Rammstein - Seaman

Come in my boat

a storm is rising

and it is becoming night

Where do you want to go

so completely alone

you are drifting away

Who holds your hand

when it pulls you under

Where do you want to go

the cold sea is boundless

Come in my boat

the autumn wind holds

the sails taut

Now you are standing by the lantern

with tears in your face

the daylight falls on the side

the autumn wind sweeps the streets clear

Now you are standing by the lantern

you have tears in your face

the evening light chases away the shadows

time stands still and it becomes autumn

Come in my boat

the helmsman feels longing

Come in my boat

I was the best seaman

Now you are standing by the lantern

you have tears in your face

you take the fire from the candle

time stands still and it becomes autumn

They only spoke of your mother

only the night is so merciless

at the end I am left alone

time stands still

and I am cold

Father and Son....from my "day job" I know the Captain of PS Waverley and was luck enough to receive an invite to the bridge.

"Wooden model of a funeral barge: The hull, which is carved from a single block of sycamore wood, has a good beam in proportion to length. The bow and stern have the bent ornamental finials common in this class of boat. The deck has high gunwales which gradually merge into the solid bow, but which stop abruptly against the stern-piece. The deck is divided into nine pairs of white spaces by the thwarts and centre strip, indicated by bands of red edged with black; this centre strip may represent a hogging-beam. The main body of hull painted green, with thin black lines marking off bow and stern, which are light blue. The finials, painted yellow, are also marked off by a thin black line. The gunwales are red, thwarts and centre strip also red. Five black marks on each gunwale probably represent leather loops to take oars when rowing; vertical black marks of uncertain purpose all along inside of gunwales. Just abaft of black line between hull and bows are oculi on an oblong yellow ground outlined in black; oculi white with outlines, pupils and markings in black, in the form of a 'wedjat'-eye. There is no mast or rigging; this type of craft did not manoeuvre under sail. There are two steering-posts aft, with steering-oars in position; the larboard tiller may be a modern restoration. The steering-posts are capped with falcon-heads looking forward; they are elaborately painted, sacred wigs blue, faces yellow with black markings. Posts are painted with a filigree pattern in green, red, and blue on a white base. Steering-posts fit into square holes, falcon-heads in one piece with posts. The transverse bar is fixed with three pegs. Pegs on capitals of pillars fit into holes in canopy, feet of pillars into holes in deck. Altar glued to deck and jars glued to altar. The steering-oars with blade and loom in one piece were decorated with falcon-heads fixed to butt by pegs, colours as heads on posts; the larboard falcon-head is missing. Looms of oars are mainly green, with white ends separated from the green Amidships is a canopy over a mummy of a woman lying on a bier with lion-legs which is not fixed to the deck. Canopy slopes down from front to back in a gentle curve in the usual Egyptian manner; painted white with broad yellow border inside and out, front edge with vertical alternate stripes of blue, green, red, blue. Canopy supported by lotus-bud (?) columns painted with bands of yellow, green, blue, and red separated by narrower bands of white; black lines border the colour bands. Mummy white with blue wig, yellow face, eyes outlined in black. Bier yellow with broad black stripes, on both sides of the body and on the legs, imitating interlaced leather thongs. Forward of the bier is a table for offerings, painted white, on stout legs. The top is divided lengthwise with three partitions, a broad raised piece between two runnels. There are three round depressions for jars, two of which are 'in situ'; one is green and the other red. Both jars have a black band above the shoulder of the jar and conical black caps representing mud stoppers. There is a helmsman sitting aft between the steering-oars; red body, white skirt coming just below the knees. At head and foot of the mummy are female mourners wearing long white dresses covering them just below the breast to half-way down the shin, and fastened with a white strap over left shoulder and across chest and back; flesh painted yellow, eyes in black and white. The woman at the mummy's feet has her right arm slanting forward; left arm is missing. The woman at the head has her (broken) right arm extended horizontally and left bent upward with palm on head. On the three figures the scalps are represented as pink, with black spots, to indicate that the hair has been shaved or cropped very short. All three figures made entirely in one piece-usually the arms are pegged and glued in place. Women's feet in shallow holes in deck; helmsman glued to stern-piece. The bier with mummy is not fastened to the deck. Lot 513 at 1835 sale. According to the Salt sale catalogue this boat and a companion boat (.9525) were found in the same tomb with the model granary (.2463), E. A. Wallis Budge 'A Guide to the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Egyptian Rooms, and the Coptic Room' (London, 1922), p. 23. The location of the tomb is not stated. See note on acquisition of that object for possible Theban association.

The description of the boat in the 1835 sale catalogue (lot 513) includes mention of 'the leg of an ox' as a food offering. A detailed drawing of the components of the boat, made by Robert Hay, probably before the sale, depicts this painted wooden model of an ox leg, with measurement of its length (BL Add MS 29844A, f.102), and this enables it to be identified with a model now stored in M4/L/7, but unnumbered (JHT, 11/3/2020)." HUA HIN, THAILAND - DECEMBER 25 : Participants in the Hua Hin Long Boat Competition 2011 on December 25, 2011 in The Khotao Lake , Hua Hin, Thailand.

I had a sharp shock back to the reality of the political situation of this country. As I was walking down to one of the many French style bakeries I was quickly approached by several heavily armed members of the military. Since I have been here I have noticed the army on nearly every corner holding machine guns or standing behind very large portable cannon things (I have no idea what they are but they look like cannons). But as none of them have ever really spoken to me I have just put it all to the back of my mind. Not today. I was told that I was not allowed to go any further as a riot had just broken out. I find that hard to believe as this place is so tranquil and the citizens so happy. I decided it was not a good idea to argue with a man that could hardly understand me while holding a very large very mean looking gun. The only thing left to do was walk away and spend the afternoon on a boat seeing the many riverside temples. Interestingly enough I scored a skipper that was currently studying at university and could speak perfect English. He quietly told me that there was no riot. He laughed at my surprise and explained that it was a group of students demonstrating against the new king. This new king was put into power when his brother and the rest of his family were mysteriously killed. My helmsman explained that everyone loved the old king and that he was a wonderful man. He had created an independent government to himself that would run the country. On the other hand this new king had, once in power, dissolved the government. Unlike Australia or England there is no freedom of speech in Nepal. The newspapers and television stations are run by the king. If anyone says anything negative or bad about the new king they can get into some serious trouble. So that is way the army said there was a riot, but you didn’t hear it from him or from me.

The Coast Guard got their boat stuck on a sand bar. We offered to tow them out the previous day. I felt very sorry for the helmsman and commander of that boat.

The ship in the background is the "MCL Trader", which ran aground on a sandbar at the Danish island Bornholm.

According to the police in Rønne, the blood alcohol level of the helmsman was 2,38 0/00 when the accident occurred.

The vessel is approved to transport nuclear waste, but wasn't at the time of the collision.

The bridge is the ship's command center. The commanding officer usually cons this ship from a stately leather chair surrounded by computer screens. The commanding officer directs the helmsman, who actually steers the carrier, the lee helmsman, who directs the engine room to control the speed of the ship, the Quartermaster of the Watch, who keeps track of navigation information, and a number of lookouts and support personnel. When the commanding officer is not on the bridge, he puts an Officer of the Deck in charge of operations.

Of course drinking and boating (yachting?) is wrong and just plain stupid. The real helmsman was in the pilothouse behind me. I was on an afternoon cruse with my department in Lake Ontario just south of Toronto. Good food, good weather, good company, and all under a set of sails!

The Helmsman'a position, minus the wheel is located in a structure called the "Citadel" which is a structure that comes up from within the ship through the bridge. The walls are made of 17" thick steel walls for protection from large peojectiles.

For five days we hand steered Oriole, a Bowman 57, across the Norwegian Sea. This is pretty close to what the helmsman sees of the compass and log while steering.

This trip was an expedition voyage from Norway to Iceland put on by UK-based sailing company Rubicon 3. To learn more about them, visit their web site:

PS I posted this especially for Hobbyfotograf Jürgen aus Rheinhausen

Fishermen's Memorial Statue (1925)

The inscription is taken from Psalm 107, verse 23, line 24, which reads as follows:

"They that go down to the sea in ships,

That do business in great waters;

These see the works of the Lord,

And his wonders in the deep."

The sculptor was Leonard Craske and the dedication was August 23, 1925. The bronze monument consists of a nearly square base of sea green granite, carried from the famous "Blood Ledge" in the Bay View section of Gloucester. The stone is cut with a rough finish to typify the rugged character of the figure, with a single panel on the front holding the bronze letters of inscription, "They that go down to the sea in ships". 1623 - 1923.

The pose chosen is that of a helmsman bringing his craft up as close hauled to the wind as possible to clear some dangerous rocks, his eyes being fixed on the sails to detect the first indication that they are beginning to spill the wind, every muscle being strained to hold the wheel firmly until the peril is passed.

This is a memorial to all of the Gloucester fishermen who in years since Gloucester was settled in 1623 have lost their lives while fishing. It faces the outer harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Wandering Albatross

At length did cross an Albatross,

Thorough the fog it came;

As if it had been a Christian soul,

We hail'd it in God's name.

It ate the food it ne'er had eat,

And round and round it flew.

The ice did split with a thunder fit;

The helmsman steer'd us through!

Samuel Taylor Coleridge "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"

Here's another shot of an albatross. They could skim the waves for hours and never make a bad move in even the worst of conditions.

Imagine - low tides, strong waves and swell and Looe RNLI's Atlantic 75 needs to return to shore as quickly as possible with any casualties. Usually the Atlantic 75 reverses onto her Drive Off Drive On (DODO) trailer so she can launch quickly when next called out. For a quick return to shore a net is rigged on the DOD trailer to capture the lifeboat and bring her to a halt quickly. Hats off to the helmsman who has to keep the engines running and enter the trailer at speed. Just imagine having to do this in a high swell or surf, you would have to judge it just right as visibility would be non existent!
