NORFOLK – Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Ashley Wallace (Center), along with other Sailors from Pre-Commissioning Unit Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28), conduct Coxswain training aboard a Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat (RIB). A coxswain in the U.S. Navy is the helmsman, or driver, of a boat, like those that ferry ship crews around a harbor.
1936 Twin Coach Helms Bakery Delivery Truck
$246,400 USD | Sold
From Sotheby's:
To Angelenos of a certain age, few vehicles are as instantly evocative as the Twin Coach Helms Bakery truck. Looking not unlike a plump bread loaf on wheels, these delivery vehicles—along with the special whistle sounded by the “Helmsman” at the wheel—announced the arrival of bread and sweets, fresh from the ovens at Helms’ sprawling, modern bakery facility in Culver City, California.
Helms Bakery products were never sold in stores, and founder Paul Helms, who established the company in 1931, wisely realized that distinctive delivery vehicles served as an effective form of advertising in their own right. To that end, he commissioned Twin Coach of Kent, Ohio to produce 148 of these flat-nosed vans. A stout Hercules four-cylinder provided ample power, while wooden cabinets in the back housed the delivery items.
As is so often the case, these commercial vehicles were used hard for years on end, and they were typically upgraded over their working lives before being disposed of and scrapped. This 1936 Helms Twin Coach is one of very few that have survived to the present. Wonderfully restored in the Helms livery of light yellow and blue, it retains its four-cylinder engine (many were converted to six-cylinder power over the years). Mock baked goods line the wooden shelves in the back, and the exterior is adorned with period-correct graphics.
Worthy of special note is the “First and Finest on the Moon” poster on the driver’s door, which recalls a remarkable moment in Helms history; its bread accompanied astronauts into space on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. Unfortunately, this new Lunar delivery territory was not enough to overcome market pressures from modern supermarkets, and the company shuttered later that year.
Helms used a range of delivery vehicles over the years, but it is these iconic Twin Coach trucks that have endured in the public memory. Whether you grew up hearing stories of the fabled Helms Bakery fleet, or perhaps even recall the days when these trucks roamed the streets of Southern California, this rare Twin Coach would make for a unique and historically notable addition to your collection. Restored in its proper Helms livery, this rare survivor is sure to bring smiles—if not fresh-baked cookies and bread—to all who see it.

The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (毛主席纪念堂, Máo Zhǔxí Jìniàn Táng), commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death in 1976.
Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. This highly popular attraction is located in the middle of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the capital of China. It stands on the previous site of the Gate of China, the southern (main) gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The remains of the Great Helmsman, as he is sometimes known, are on display for public viewing (though some claim this is a wax sculpture placed over the actual body). People line up for hundreds of yards every day to see the former chairman, many paying tribute to him with flowers that can be purchased at the entrance on the north side. There is a souvenir shop at the exit on the south side.
Loïck Peyron, French yachtsman
He is particularly famous for winning many races in the 1990s on board his trimaran Fujicolor. He won the ORMA Championship four times in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2002.
After Benjamin de Rothschild gave him control of the Gitana Team in April 2006, the team built Gitana Eighty, a 60 feet monohull, launched in July 2007 with which Loick Peyron won the Transat.[1] On 9 December 2008, he began his participation in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe with Gitana Eighty. After having led the race for 16 days, Gitana Eighty's mast broke.
In 2010, Peyron sailed in the 33rd America's Cup as part of the Alinghi Team, in the roles of 'floater' in race 1 and relief helmsman in race 2. Alinghi were defeated by the American challenger BMW Oracle Racing. He is currently on an attempt for the Jules Verne Trophy with Banque Populaire V (nov 2011).

This was the common working-place for us "signalling sailors" (signalmatros) when at sea (One-third of the time was spent as helmsman in the wheelhouse). We had the following tasks: Lookout (with binoculars), signalling with a lamp to other Swedish ships in the navy and machine-gunner (primarily against hostile aeroplanes.

Celebration
Today was the day we officially got our beach back. It has been closed off for just over 18 months while improvements were made to the sea wall and mile long (1.8km) promenade.
The official opening (the boring bit) took place at 1:30 when a plaque was uncovered. Then at 2pm, at the south end, the Army Reserves fired a big gun across the waters and the unofficial part of the celebration continued.
One rowing boat with 4 rowers and a helmsman set out to row the distance.
Two swimmers from the Wild Sea Swimmers group swam the distance.
Six runners from the Glenrothes Triathlon Club ran the distance along the beach.
Kirkcaldy and District Pipe Band led members of the public along the promenade itself. Maybe a couple of hundred hardy souls made the pilgrimage.
The weather was a typical cold, windy and cloudy December day.

I'm not loving the hard edges and colours in this set of photos. Took them on a Kodak one-shot. Took some a couple of years back on a Kodak one-shot and they came out great. They shouldn't've changed the recipe.

The "jekt" was extensively used for transport along the coast of Norway.
The helmsman's view is blocked by the sail, hence the need for a watchman at the bow.
before I had a chance to upload all my photos from the recent Japan trip, I was off again on another trip to Asia, this time to China, and Hunan province. These images were taken on Tangerine island in the middle of a river that bisects the provincial capital city of Changsha, not far from Mai Zedong's hometown, and where he spent some years in his youth, when he was young and handsome...
USS Santa Olivia, a World War I troopship. The Santa Olivia was built in 1918 as a cargo ship and was taken over by the Navy in July 1918. She made 6 round trips between the US and Europe before she was decommissioned in July 1919 and returned to civilian ownership. For more information on the Santa Oliva see the Naval Historical Center's webpage.
One other interesting fact I found is that according to Jeffery Meyers' s "Bogart: A Life in Hollywood," Humphrey Bogart served as helmsman on the Santa Olivia but went AWOL and missed the ship when it sailed for France on April 14, 1919. I'm not sure when he would have rejoined the ship so I don't know if he would be in any of the pictures.
