A picture story of USS Ronald Reagan bridge watch team. Every watch stander has a different and unique position which contributes to the efficiency in navigation, safety of handling the vessel underway and the success or failure of the ship's mission. Each team member stands and rotate his/her watch every four hour. Officer of the deck is responsible for the watch standers performance while the ship's commanding officer (CO) has an overall responsibility of the ship.

Not every watch standing position is shown in this illustration. Photo illustration by Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Kitt Amaritnant.

Twenty-six nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 30 to Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Tomas Compian/ Released)

River Rafting is journeying on the torrential river on an inflatable rubber boat.An amateur with little sense of adventure can equally enjoy it.You are provided with a life-jacket to put on all the time while on the river and also with a crash-helmet.A trained professional river guide heads the rafting team.

During owr stretch of rafting,we had in all 6rafts..i was very eager to get a live rafting shot and thus requested owr guide to be ahead of everyone and stop at a particular place from where i could capture the other rafts in the rapids..This is what i got!!!

Check out my best onflickriver

White water rafting expeditions in india are organised and managed by professional indian teams who have trained abroad in some of the most difficult water stretches of the world. The helmsman on board is familiar with the topography of the river and its obstacles.

Helms Bakeries were started by Paul Helms in 1931. In those days most food items were delivery. Just like the milk man, the Helms bakery "Helmsman" drove his Divco Coach to his assigned area and delivered bread to the households. If you needed some items you would place a blue sign with a large "H" in the window. The Helmsman would notice it and make a delivery. He would also sound the distinctive two tone whistle to let customers know he was on their street. Kids would flag down the bakery trucks as they traveled through the neighborhood. The coaches were stocked with freshly baked donuts and pastries in addition to the warm breads.

Helms Bakery was also contracted to provide bread to the Summer Olympics athletes in 1932 Los Angeles and 1936 Berlin. Helms bread was also carried on NASA's Apollo 11 in 1969 shortly before the factory closed.

In this photo, the LAFD obtained permission From Helms Bakeries to carry the fire safety posters on their delivery trucks during fire prevention week.

Terracotta, Late Archaic, ca. 520-510 B.C.E, Attributed to the Circle of the Antimenes Painter

Diam. 13 in. (33 cm.)

During the sixth century B.C.E., and before the advent of the red-figured krater shape, the black-figured dinos was the centerpiece of the men's wine-drinking ritual called the symposium. Its mouth is wide to accommodate a variety of functions: at times another vessel was placed inside to chill the wine; the dinos could also serve as a mixing vessel for wine and water. Small pitchers were dipped into the wine, which was then poured into drinking cups.

The strong influence of the Antimenes Painter, the most prolific of the late sixth-century black-figure painters, is evident in this vase's clean and uncluttered style of painting, as well as its legible, straight forward narrative. The top of the rim is decorated with battles of hoplites, interspersed with four quadrigae in one continuous battle frieze that has been carefully, but not mathematically, calculated to fill the circular space. Four large ships are under sail on the rim's interior. Ranks of oarsmen and a helmsman are visible on each ship, which have swan's heads carved on their sterns and battering ram shaped like boar's heads. In a wittily designed and executed on Homer's "wine dark sea," these ships would have seemed to those who peered inside to be sailing directly on the surface of the wine itself.

Ready room

A ready room is a small room on a ship which serves a multi-purpose role for the Captain of the ship concerned.

The term was originally used with respect to ships in the British Royal Navy, which had a small room adjacent to the bridge.

It served as a rest and sleeping facility for the Captain, separate from his regular private quarters. Occupation of the ready room was required by regulation when the ship was underway in times of war, when the Captain must be immediately available to the bridge at any hour in case of emergency.

The concept of a ready room has been popular in recent years in the TV show 'Star Trek'. In Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager and Deep Space Nine, the ready room served as an office of the captain or commanding officer of a starship. Here, they could work or hold meetings in private yet still be a moment's notice away from the bridge of their ship.

The helmsman was in the pilothouse to the right of the photo. The officer of the deack ran the ship from this space. In the background is the chair reserved for the Comanding Officer.

USS Turner Joy, a museum ship in Bremerton, Washington. This Forrest Sherman class destroyer was commissioned in 1959, saw war service in Vietnam, and has been at this location as a museum ship since 1991. Her claim to fame is her participation, with the USS Maddox (DD 731), in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident which the President Johnson administration staged in 1964 to justify a greatly expanded US participation in the ongoing war between North Vietnam and South Vietnam.

"Twelve oarsmen, a helmsman, and a pilot, or look-out, ferry their passenger, the tomb-owner. Such models were associated with religious beliefs, as they symbolized the journey of the deceased to Abydos, the traditional burial place of Osiris, lord of the afterworld. The tomb-owner is clothed with a shroud and is shown with a blue beard. This boat was probably placed in the tomb to assist the deceased in navigating the Nile of the underworld. Typically, models of passenger ships found in Middle Kingdom tombs occur in pairs. One to travel south, equipped with a sail, as the wind in Egypt blows constantly from north to south, and the other (as this model shows) propelled by rowers aided by the Nile's current, to travel north.
