During the sixth century B.C.E., and before the advent of the red-figured krater shape, the black-figured dinos was the centerpiece of the men's wine-drinking ritual called the symposium. Its mouth is wide to accommodate a variety of functions: at times another vessel was placed inside to chill the wine; the dinos could also serve as a mixing vessel for wine and water. Small pitchers were dipped into the wine, which was then poured into drinking cups.

 

The strong influence of the Antimenes Painter, the most prolific of the late sixth-century black-figure painters, is evident in this vase's clean and uncluttered style of painting, as well as its legible, straight forward narrative. The top of the rim is decorated with battles of hoplites, interspersed with four quadrigae in one continuous battle frieze that has been carefully, but not mathematically, calculated to fill the circular space. Four large ships are under sail on the rim's interior. Ranks of oarsmen and a helmsman are visible on each ship, which have swan's heads carved on their sterns and battering ram shaped like boar's heads. In a wittily designed and executed on Homer's "wine dark sea," these ships would have seemed to those who peered inside to be sailing directly on the surface of the wine itself.

I highly recommend the tour of this vessel, located now in its own park in Portsmouth, NH.

We visited on a foggy cold day (Jan 13, 2013) and it was quite comfy walking around in the sub. And I only bumped my head once! It's very impressive to take in all the controls, piping, electric cables, space for the crew and machinery.

THE CHAIRMAN MAO MEMORIAL HALL

 

The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (Chinese: 毛主席纪念堂; pinyin: Máo Zhǔxí Jìniàntáng), commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, or the Mao Mausoleum, is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943, and the chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China from 1945, until his death.

 

Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed, and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. This highly popular attraction is located in the middle of Tiananmen Square. On this site had previously stood the Gate of China, the southern (main) gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

 

The remains of the Great Helmsman, as he is sometimes known, are on display for public viewing. People line up by the hundreds of feet every day to see the former chairman, many paying tribute to him with flowers that can be rented at the entrance on the north side. There is a souvenir shop at the exit on the south side.

 

CONSTRUCTION

 

Soon after Mao's death, on September 9, 1976, construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on November 24, 1976, The mausoleum was completed on May 24, 1977.

 

According to China Pictorial, Issue 9, 1977, people throughout China designed and built the mausoleum. Material from all over China was used for the construction: granite from Sichuan Province, porcelain plates from Guangdong Province, pine trees from Yan'an, Shaanxi Province, saw-wort seeds from the Tian Shan Mountains in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, earth from the quake-stricken Tangshan, color pebbles from Nanjing, milky quartz from the Kunlun Mountains, pine logs from Jiangxi Province, and rock samples from Mount Everest. Water and sand from the Taiwan Straits were also used to symbolically emphasize the People's Republic of China's claims over Taiwan. 700,000 people from different provinces, autonomous regions, and nationalities did symbolic voluntary labour.

 

EMBALMING

 

At Mao's death, China did not have the embalming technologies needed to preserve Mao's body for public display. Since it was impossible for China to obtain the necessary technologies from the USSR in the wake of the Sino-Soviet split, China asked for help from Vietnam, which had learned the trade from the USSR when Ho Chi Minh's body was preserved for public display, again contrary to his final wishes. Perhaps reflecting gratitude for Chinese support during the Vietnam War, Vietnam passed on the expertise learnt from the USSR. However, the effectiveness of such practice is subject to debate because there is significant controversy over whether the body is real [citation needed]. Visitors have noted the exceedingly waxy appearance of the corpse [citation needed], as well as the speed at which visitors are ushered through the room [citation needed]. The body is on display for at most a few hours each day - with further restrictions during summer.

 

CRYSTAL COFFIN

 

Although the embalming of the body was solved by learning the Soviet trade from Vietnam, displaying the body proved a more difficult problem to solve. Because the crystal coffin for Ho Chi Minh was directly provided by the USSR, Vietnam could not pass on the necessary expertise to China. As a result, China was forced to develop the know-how themselves. This proved to be a much greater task with huge difficulties.

More than 25 ships that have been sunk near Isle Royale in Lake Superior (North America). Isle Royale has been an obstacle to shipping on Lake Superior since the earliest days.

 

Upon its reefs, more than 25 major wrecks have occurred. Some were refloated, but most never left.

 

The America was built in Detroit by a Michigan City, Indiana, and Detroit, Michigan, partnership for excursion trips between Michigan City and Chicago, Illinois. Only three years later, in 1901, the America was operating on Lake Erie, when Alfred Booth of A. Booth Co. of Chicago began to negotiate for ownership of this modern and fast ship (19 knots (35 km/h; 22 mph)) for the North Shore route out of Duluth, Minnesota. On April 26, 1902, the America left her berth on the lower lakes for a final home on Lake Superior.

 

On June 6, 1928, the America steamed through the Duluth Ship Canal. Later that day, she landed in Grand Marais after making the routine stops along the coast. After clearing cargo and passengers, the America rounded the breakwall heading for Isle Royale. Apparently, the routine was to continue north along the shore and return through Isle Royale, stopping at the fish houses before returning to Duluth.

 

But on this night, the America was carrying several passengers bound for Washington Island. At 3 a.m. on June 7, she nosed out of the Singer Hotel Dock on Washington Island. Heading for North Gap and open water, the Captain retired and let First Mate Wicks and a helmsman take the watch. Within minutes, the ship bumped over a reef, puncturing holes in the single bottom. Returning to the bridge, where the mate was signaling the alarm to the crew and passenger, Capt. Smith ordered the helmsman, Fred Nelson, to head towards a gravel beach before the ship floundered and lost headway.

 

Thirty yards off the beach, the America hit another reef and came to an abrupt halt. Meanwhile, the crew in the engine room greased the engine to prevent rust and improve salvage and the topside crew began to move the passengers to the lifeboats. Within an hour and a half of leaving Washington Island, the crew and passengers were on their way back in lifeboats. They met a small fleet of fishing boats coming to the sound of the whistle.

 

The America came to rest with the bow standing out of the water and the stern and midships reaching into the depths. A. Booth and Sons elected not to salvage the America, probably due to the completion of Minnesota Trunk Route I (US 61). The new road cut the cost of transportation along the shore making it unprofitable to operate a ship. The next year in September, 1929, Capt. Cornelius Flynn of the Duluth Salvage Company bought the rights to the America. The winter of '28–29 had done minor damage to the upper cabins. But before he could get a crew to the site, winter set in and kept them at home. The following spring, the ice had sheared off the cabins at the waterline. The decrease in weight and the upward pressure of the ice floated the wreck and it settled beneath the surface. Today, it can be seen 4 to 85 feet (1 to 26 m) below the water.

The presence of crude oil on Alaska's North Slope was suspected for more than a century. In 1968, Atlantic Richfield Company and Humble Oil (now Exxon) confirmed the presence of a vast oil field at Prudhoe Bay. Within a year, plans were under way for a pipeline as a safe and efficient way to bring those reserves to market. Atlantic Richfield Company, British Petroleum (now BP PLC), and Humble Oil (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) agreed to build a pipeline that would connect the North Slope to Valdez on Prince William Sound, being the northernmost ice-free port in the United States. Oil from the pipeline is first stored, then loaded aboard tankers at the 1,000-acre site terminal in Valdez, located across the bay from the city. Tankers arrive almost daily at Valdez to carry crude oil from the pipeline terminal to refineries.

 

There are 18 crude oil storage tanks at the Terminal that can hold 510,000 barrels each, for a total capacity of 9.18 million barrels. For safety, each tank is surrounded by a concrete dike, which can hold 110% of the oil in the tanks.

 

In 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker accidentally struck a reef releasing 10.8 million gallons of crude oil [roughly equivalent to 17 Olympic-sized swimming pools] into Prince William Sound eventually covering 11,000 miles of ocean. The spill killed 250,000 sea birds, 2,800 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles, up to 22 orcas and billions of salmon and herring .

 

The Exxon Valdez departed from the Trans Alaska Pipeline terminal at 9:12 pm March 23, 1989. William Murphy, an expert ship's pilot hired to manoeuvre the 986-foot vessel through the Valdez Narrows, was in control of the wheelhouse. At his side was the captain of the vessel, Joe Hazelwood. Helmsman Harry Claar was steering. After passing through Valdez Narrows, pilot Murphy left the vessel and Captain Hazelwood took over the wheelhouse. The Exxon Valdez encountered icebergs in the shipping lanes and Captain Hazelwood ordered Claar to take the Exxon Valdez out of the shipping lanes to go around the icebergs. He then handed over control of the wheelhouse to Third Mate Gregory Cousins with precise instructions to turn back into the shipping lanes when the tanker reached a certain point. At that time, Claar was replaced by Helmsman Robert Kagan. For reasons that remain unclear, Cousins and Kagan failed to make the turn back into the shipping lanes and the ship ran aground on Bligh Reef at 12:04 am March 24, 1989. Captain Hazelwood was in his quarters at the time, some argue, with a hangover from heavy drinking.

 

The effects of the spill continued to be felt for many years afterwards. As of 2010 there were an estimated 23,000 US gallons (87 m3) of Valdez crude oil still in Alaska's sand and soil, breaking down at a rate estimated at less than 4% per year.

 

On March 24, 2014, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the spill, NOAA scientists reported that some species seem to have recovered, with the sea otter the latest creature to return to pre-spill numbers. Scientists who have monitored the spill area for the last 25 years report that concern remains for one of two pods of local orca whales, with fears that one pod may eventually die out. Federal scientists estimate that between 16,000 and 21,000 gallons of oil remains on beaches in Prince William Sound and up to 450 miles away. Some of the oil does not appear to have biodegraded at all. A USGS scientist who analyses the remaining oil along the coastline states that it remains among rocks and between tide marks. "The oil mixes with seawater and forms an emulsion...Left out, the surface crusts over but the inside still has the consistency of mayonnaise – or mousse."]

 

In the aftermath of the spill, Alaska governor Steve Cowper issued an executive order requiring two tugboats to escort every loaded tanker from Valdez out through Prince William Sound to Hinchinbrook Entrance. As the plan evolved in the 1990s, one of the two routine tugboats was replaced with a 210-foot (64 m) Escort Response Vehicle (ERV). The majority of tankers at Valdez are no longer single-hulled. Congress has enacted legislation requiring all tankers to be double-hulled.

 

In 2010, a CNN report alleged that many oil spill cleanup workers involved in the Exxon Valdez response had subsequently become sick. Anchorage lawyer Dennis Mestas found that this was true of 6,722 of 11,000 worker files he was able to inspect. Access to the records was controlled by Exxon. Exxon responded in a statement to CNN:

  

"After 20 years, there is no evidence suggesting that either cleanup workers or the residents of the communities affected by the Valdez spill have had any adverse health effects as a result of the spill or its cleanup”

Twelve oarsmen, a helmsman, and a pilot, or look-out, ferry their passenger, the tomb-owner. Such models were associated with religious beliefs, as they symbolized the journey of the deceased to Abydos, the traditional burial place of Osiris, lord of the afterworld. The tomb-owner is clothed with a shroud and is shown with a blue beard. This boat was probably placed in the tomb to assist the deceased in navigating the Nile of the underworld. Typically, models of passenger ships found in Middle Kingdom tombs occur in pairs. One to travel south, equipped with a sail, as the wind in Egypt blows constantly from north to south, and the other (as this model shows) propelled by rowers aided by the Nile's current, to travel north.

Inscription on the Plaque: For many years, this statue stood in front of and was a trademark for the world renowned Helms Bakery on Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles.   On October 6, 1971, it was generously donated to the Marina by the Helms family.   In 1975, through the generosity of the Marina's Yacht clubs it was provided with a new helm.

 

The Helmsman is an approximately 10’ high painted cast concrete figure made in the 1930s.

During the sixth century B.C.E., and before the advent of the red-figured krater shape, the black-figured dinos was the centerpiece of the men's wine-drinking ritual called the symposium. Its mouth is wide to accommodate a variety of functions: at times another vessel was placed inside to chill the wine; the dinos could also serve as a mixing vessel for wine and water. Small pitchers were dipped into the wine, which was then poured into drinking cups.

 

The strong influence of the Antimenes Painter, the most prolific of the late sixth-century black-figure painters, is evident in this vase's clean and uncluttered style of painting, as well as its legible, straight forward narrative. The top of the rim is decorated with battles of hoplites, interspersed with four quadrigae in one continuous battle frieze that has been carefully, but not mathematically, calculated to fill the circular space. Four large ships are under sail on the rim's interior. Ranks of oarsmen and a helmsman are visible on each ship, which have swan's heads carved on their sterns and battering ram shaped like boar's heads. In a wittily designed and executed on Homer's "wine dark sea," these ships would have seemed to those who peered inside to be sailing directly on the surface of the wine itself.

www.henshawphotography.com The Palinuro is a three-masted, iron-hulled barquentine, active as sails trainings vessel for the Italian Navy.

 

The Italian sail training vessel Palinuro is named after Palinurus the famous helmsman of Aeneas's ship (after the fall of Troy the defeated Trojans detoured the Mediterranean). Palinurus is seen as a prototype of an experienced navigator or guide.

 

History

Built at the shipyard Anciens Chantiers Dubigeon in Nantes by order of Joseph Briand (together with her sister ship Lieutenant René Guillon) and named Commandant Louis Richard, the ship was intended as barquentine. However the building costs of both ships ruined the original customer even before the ships were finished. The new owner Pècheries du Labrador from Saint-Malo finished the ships as schooner to be used for cod fishing.

 

In 1948 the Commandant Louis Richard was bought by shipowner Bonin from Noirmoutier-en-Île, changed to a barquentine and renamed Jean Marc Aline to be used for fishing in the Southern Indian Ocean. Eventually this activity became unprofitable, thus the ship was set for sale.

 

In 1951 the Italian Navy was looking for a replacement for the Cristoforo Colombo (passed to the Soviet Union), bought the vessel and renamed her Palinuro.

 

After a complete renovation the ship is used as training vessel for Senior Ratings.

Lt Cmdr Danielle Croft was an explorer of worlds. She’d learnt her trade as a young ensign on the USS Queen Elizabeth, under the command of Captain Richard Croft, her father. However, she has such a dislike of the implied nepotism, when a promotion to Lieutenant aboard the USS Constitution as a junior helmsman, she took it. It was while on an away mission to garrus three that proved the mettle of the young lieutenant, with the majority of the away team either rkilled or under threat, Lieutenant Croft took charge, defeated the aggressors and saved the away team almost single handedly.

Having proven herself both as a capable officer and as an explorer, she was given the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and assigned a small survey vessel to command, the USS Tomb Raider, with a crew of five. For five years, Lieutenant Commander Croft made astounding discoveries with her small team, until her ship was destroyed in a Klingon attack, that killed two of her crew.

 

Lt Cmdr Croft was offered a promotion to Commander, and offered the command of Starbase 17. However, the lure of exploration proved a little too great for Danielle, and along with her two surviving crew members from the Tomb raider, she rejected the promotion, instead requesting a posting to USS Enterprise.

 

Croft had been serving aboard Enterprise for two years; the top and pants that she had favoured being replaced by the short mini dress that was the preferred mode of dress for female officers aboard Enterprise. Recently however, she had received a private communication from headquarters. There was to be a new USS Tomb Raider. A much bigger ship with a hundred crew, scientists and explorers like herself. A starship. She was to be transferred, and skimming the letter, wondered what position she was to serve in. Then at the bottom, it said “promotion to Captain”. Captain Danielle Croft of the USS Tomb Raider. She liked the sound of that. Croft accepted the promotion.

Italien / Venetien - Lazise

 

Lazise is a comune (municipality) and town in the Province of Verona in the Italian region Veneto, located about 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of Venice and about 20 kilometres (12 miles) northwest of Verona. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 6,213 and an area of 65.0 square kilometres (25.1 sq mi). This geographical location empowers a position of great landscape value, but it also features elements of great architectural value and of great historical importance.

 

As well as these peculiarities, Lazise can rely on the presence of many attractions: a thermal spring situated in Colà, two amusement parks (Canevaworld and Gardaland, this latter situated partly on the territory of Castelnuovo del Garda, where it is based, and partly on the territory of Lazise) and an extensive hilly agricultural landscape. Lazise records about 3.5 million tourist visits every year, figures that place it at 12th place in Italy among tourist destinations, and the first Italian lake destination.

 

The municipality of Lazise contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Colà and Pacengo.

 

Lazise borders the following municipalities: Bardolino, Bussolengo, Castelnuovo del Garda, Padenghe sul Garda, Pastrengo, Peschiera del Garda and Sirmione.

 

Origins of the name

 

The name Lazise comes from the Latin word lacus that means ‘lakeside village’, as some documents of Early Middle Ages seem to confirm, referring to the settlement as Laceses. Another hypothesis, later ruled out, put the name of the town as originating from Antonio Bevilacqua di Loncis. Loncis, from his castle in Bavaria, became governor of Lake Garda and the forefather of a major family that then changed its name to Bevilacqua-Lazise. Last hypothesis is lately ruled out comes from Lazica Kingdom.

 

History

 

Its name derives from the Latin "lacus" which means lacustrine village. Lazise in fact was originally a group of stilt houses beyond that Roman village and market. Between 888 and 961, during the reign of Berengar II of Italy and his son, the town was subject only to the monarch, that is, it was a "free villa" not subject to some feudatory. In 961, Italy was invaded by German troops, who descended the valley of the Adige to camp on the shores of Garda.

 

In 983, the Holy Roman Emperor Otto I granted Lazise the right to fortify itself and establish trading rights. It is considered as the first and oldest comune in Italy, and perhaps all of Europe. The medieval Church of Saint Nicolò has frescoes dating from the 12th century, by the school of Giotto. The customs house from the 16th century was constructed to control trade on the lake. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Lazise was occupied by the Scaligeri of Verona who built the castle and encircled the town with walls.

 

In 1405, it came under Venetian Republic rule until Napoleon conquered northern Italy in 1796.

 

After the Congress of Vienna (1815) it entered a period of Austrian rule, until in 1866, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.

 

The 14th-century La Pergolana villa, a kilometre north of Lazise, hosts a honey festival during the first weekend of October.

 

Tourism

 

The city is a holiday destination, and attracts tourists from the immediate area owing to its views of the Alps from the southern shore of Lake Garda.

 

At the center of the city is a series of interconnected piazze that house numerous open-air cafés, various shops, gelaterie (ice-cream parlours), and bars.

 

Scaliger Castle

 

The most imposing building of Lazise is the Scaliger Castle and the city wall that surrounds the historic centre. The castle was built during the domination of the lords of Verona Bartolomeo II and Antonio della Scala, or maybe just before the father Cansignorio della Scala (considering that Porta Nuova bears the date 21 May 1376). The city has always had three gates equipped with drawbridges: Porta Superiore, today known as Porta San Zeno, for the access on east side; Porta Lion (so called because it determined the coat of arms of the Serenissima), for the access on south side; Porta Nuova (so named because it was the last to be built), today widely called Porta Cansignorio, for access on north side. The castle suffered damages during the siege of the Venetians in July 1438, and then again in May 1528 due to the work of the army of Charles V. In the 16th century, with the progress of new technologies and war tactics, the castle lost importance and was purchased firstly by the community of Lazise and later by private families.

 

Traditions and folklore

 

Traditional events are the Regatta delle Bisse, using traditional Venetian rowing boats (with four standing rowers and no helmsman), whose stop in Lazise takes place between July and August, and the Cuccagna del Cadenon, which takes place at the end of August in conjunction with the Festa dell’Ospite, in which an eight-metre pole is placed horizontally on the waters of the old port, abundantly coated with fat, and is won by the one who, slipping on the greasy pole, manages to take the flag to the bottom.

 

Events

 

Celebrations that regularly take place in the village are numerous, in particular fairs and festivals: the Festa dell'Ospite, that is held at the end of July in Pacengo (a neighbouring town) and at the end of August in Lazise, when there are various stands that sell typical local products, concerts and a final show with fireworks; the Antica sagra della Madonna della Neve that takes place in the municipality of Colà at the beginning of August, during which the traditional plate of anara col pien (stuffed and roast duck) is served; la Sagra del Marciapié, an old feast that is celebrated on the last day of Carnival and the first of Lent in Via Arco, during which citizens are invited to choose the representatives of the street named Via Capo Valàr, in addition to the carnival masks; lastly the national fair I giorni del miele, a trade fair completely dedicated to honey and its derivatives held at the beginning of October.

Geografie

 

Lazise befindet sich am Veroneser Südost-Ufer des Gardasees, das sandartige Strände aufweist, und liegt zwischen den Ortschaften Bardolino und Peschiera del Garda. Die Entfernung zur Provinzhauptstadt Verona beträgt etwa 23 Kilometer.

 

Klima und Vegetation

 

Vorwiegend herrscht in der südlichen Gardaseeregion mildes Klima. Die Sommer sind warm und nicht zu heiß; die Winter mild und mit wenig Regen. Schneefälle kommen höchst selten vor.

 

Vegetation

 

Rund um den Gardasee prägen mediterrane Vegetationsformen wie Zypressen, Oleander, Zedern, Olivenbäume und auch Palmen das Erscheinungsbild. An den sonnenüberfluteten Hängen gedeihen Agaven, Opuntien und Kapernsträuche.

 

Einige wenige Kilometer vom Ortszentrum entfernt befinden sich zudem zahlreiche Weingärten, Obst- und Gemüsepflanzungen sowie Weizen- und Maisfelder.

 

Geschichte

 

Der Name

 

Der Name Lazise leitet sich vom lateinischen „lacus“ ab und bedeutete wohl „villaggio lacustre“ („Seedorf“), wie Dokumente aus dem Mittelalter belegen, die das Dorf unter dem Namen „laceses“ führten.

 

Bronzezeit bis zur venezianischen Herrschaft

 

Die Geschichte reicht bis in die mittlere Bronzezeit (16.–13. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) zurück. Zahlreiche Funde in den Ortschaften La Quercia, Bor und Porto Pacengo wurden Zeugen dieser ereignisreichen Zeit.

 

Bereits im Jahre 983 erhielt der Ort unter Kaiser Otto II. in der sogenannten Veroneser Schenkung nicht nur Zoll-, Handels- und Fischereirechte, sondern auch eine weitestgehende Autonomie. Die Gemeinde Lazise rühmt sich deshalb damit, die älteste Gemeinde Italiens zu sein.

 

Im 11. Jahrhundert war Lazise eine Hafenstation, die im Besitz des Hauses Bevilacqua war. Unter Kaiser Heinrich IV. erhielt man 1077 die Erlaubnis eine Burg zu errichten, die unter dem Scaliger Cansignorio della Scala im 14. Jahrhundert zu einer bedeutenden Wehranlage mit eigenem ummauerten Hafen ausgebaut und vermutlich unter seinem Nachfolger Antonio della Scala vollendet wurde. Unter den Scaligern wurden auch die Stadtmauern und Stadttore erneuert und verstärkt. Nach dem Ende der Scaligerherrschaft 1387 waren es die Mailänder Visconti unter Gian Galeazzo Visconti, die die Herrschaft über Lazise übernahmen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt trat Lazise der Gardesana dell’Acqua bei, einer Art Konföderation mehrerer von den Visconti beherrschten Gemeinden am See und im direkten Hinterland des Sees.

 

Republik Venedig

 

1405 fiel Lazise an die Republik Venedig. Unter Venedig wurde der Ort zu einem der Liegeplatz der venezianischen Galeeren und damit einer der Stützpunkte der venezianischen Gardaseeflotte. Im Zuge des Großen Venezianerkrieges unterlag Venedig 1509 in der Schlacht von Agnadello den Franzosen. Um diesen Zeitpunkt soll nach neuesten Erkenntnissen der Kapitän der venezianischen Flotte einige Galeeren mit Steinen beschwert, in Brand gesetzt und schließlich versenkt haben. Vor dem neuen Hafen von Lazise befindet sich in etwa 500 Meter Entfernung vom Ufer in einer Tiefe zwischen 24 Metern und 27 Metern das Wrack der im 16. Jahrhundert gesunkenen Galeere, sie hat eine Größe von 30 Metern Länge und 3 Metern Breite.

 

In der Folge wurde der Ort von umherziehenden Landsknechten geplündert. Erst zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts trat wieder eine ruhigere und friedlichere Phase ein in der Lazise wirtschaftlich aufblühte. Ab 1607 wurde das Arsenal unter Herrschaft der Serenissima zur Zollstelle. Auf dem ganzen Gardasee und der östlich gelegenen Etsch wurde mit Waren wie Getreide, Papier, Stoffe, Öl sowie Eisenartikel gehandelt. Die Gegebenheit einer vorrangigen Stellung im Handel war dadurch gesichert.

 

Seit 1797

 

Im Zuge des Italienfeldzuges (1796–1797) wurde Lazise von napoleonischen Truppen besetzt. Mit dem Frieden von Campo Formio fiel der Ort erstmals an die Habsburger, um aber bereits 1805 an das napoleonische Königreich Italien angeschlossen zu werden, bevor es mit dem Wiener Kongress 1815 erneut an das habsburgerische Königreich Lombardo-Venetien fiel.

 

Lazise trat mit dem Ende des dritten italienischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges und der nachfolgenden Volksabstimmung dem Königreich Italien bei.

 

Sehenswürdigkeiten

 

Die Altstadt von Lazise weist noch immer viele Bauwerke mittelalterlichen Ursprungs auf. Das Stadtbild wird von den im 14. Jahrhundert von den Scaliger errichteten Stadtmauern und von der Burg beherrscht. Lazise besitzt zahlreiche malerische Ecken wie die Piazza Vittorio Emanuele und den kleinen Hafen, in dem noch heute Fischerboote liegen. Es gibt drei große Stadttore, durch die man in das Innere der autofreien Altstadt gelangt. Zum einen über den Eingang, der direkt an der verkehrsträchtigen Gardesana Orientale liegt und auch als Haupteingang gilt, zum anderen über die Via Rosenheim, die aufgrund der Partnerstadt Rosenheim so bezeichnet wurde, und schließlich zuletzt über die Straße namens Via Bastia.

 

Wirtschaft und Infrastruktur

 

Der Fremdenverkehr hat in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts die Landwirtschaft als wichtigste Einkommensquelle abgelöst. Im Ort befinden sich zahlreiche Hotels, Ferienanlagen, Appartement- und Zimmervermietungen sowie Campingplätze. Lazise hat 3,5 Millionen Nächtigungen pro Jahr und lag 2017 auf Platz 12 unter den Reisezielen in Italien.

 

Die bedeutendsten landwirtschaftlichen Produkte sind Wein und Olivenöl. Letzteres wird in Ölmühlen vor Ort vermarktet. Eine gewisse Rolle spielt auch die Nutztierhaltung, insbesondere die Schweineproduktion.

 

In der Vergangenheit noch bedeutend, spielt der Fischfang nur eine wirtschaftliche Nebenrolle, dem wenige Berufsfischer noch nachgehen.

 

Zu den im Zuge des Massentourismus entstandenen Einrichtungen gehört der südlich des Ortskerns gelegene Vergnügungspark Canevaworld.

 

Fischgerichte

 

Der so genannte Lavarello gilt als Felchen des Gardasees, der in den umliegenden Restaurants angeboten wird.

 

Weine

 

In den Hügeln der Venetischen Region wird auch heute noch in zahlreichen Weingütern Wein angebaut, z. B. der Bardolino Classico.

 

Wochenmarkt in Lazise

 

In den Frühjahr- und Sommermonaten finden um den Gardasee Wochenmärkte statt. Lazise bietet einen umfangreichen sowie gut sortierten Markt, der sich über die gesamte Altstadt erstreckt, der regelmäßig am Mittwoch abgehalten wird.
