The wolf Skoll will finally devour the sun, and his brother Hati will eat the moon, plunging the earth [into] darkness. The stars will vanish from the sky. The cock Fjalar will crow to the giants and the golden cock Gullinkambi will crow to the gods. A third cock will raise the dead.

The earth will shudder with earthquakes, and every bond and fetter will burst, freeing the terrible wolf Fenrir. The sea will rear up because Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent, is twisting and writhing in fury as he makes his way toward the land. With every breath, Jormungand will stain the soil and the sky with his poison. The waves caused by the serpent's emerging will set free the ship Naglfar, and with the giant Hymir as their commander, the giants will sail towards the battlefield. From the realm of the dead a second ship will set sail, and this ship carries the inhabitants of hell, with Loki as their helmsman. The fire giants, led by the giant Surt, will leave Muspell in the south to join against the gods. Surt, carrying a sword that blazes like the sun itself, will scorch the earth.

Meanwhile, Heimdall will sound his horn, calling the sons of Odin and the heroes to the battlefield. From all the corners of the world, gods, giants, dwarves, demons and elves will ride towards the huge plain of Vigrid ("battle shaker") where the last battle will be fought. Odin will engage Fenrir in battle, and Thor will attack Jormungand. Thor will victorious, but the serpent's poison will gradually kill the god of thunder. Surt will seek out the swordless Freyr, who will quickly succumb to the giant. The one-handed Tyr will fight the monstrous hound Garm and they will kill each other. Loki and Heimdall, age-old enemies, will meet for a final time, and neither will survive their encounter. The fight between Odin and Fenrir will rage for a long time, but finally Fenrir will seize Odin and swallow him. Odin's son Vidar will at once leap towards the wolf and kill him with his bare hands, ripping the wolf's jaws apart.

Then Surt will fling fire in every direction. The nine worlds will burn, and friends and foes alike will perish. The earth will sink into the sea.

After the destruction, a new and idyllic world will arise from the sea and will be filled with abundant supplies. Some of the gods will survive, others will be reborn. Wickedness and misery will no longer exist and gods and men will live happily together. The descendants of Lif and Lifthrasir will inhabit this earth.

American postcard by Fotofolio, no. F 419. Photo: Herb Ritts. Caprion: Djimon, Three-quarter nude, Profile, Hollywood, 1989.

American, Benin-born actor Djimon Hounsou (1964) began his career as a model and dancer in music videos. As an actor, he had his breakthrough in Steven Spielberg's Amistad (1997) and Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000). He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004 for his supporting role in In America (2002) and again in 2007 for Blood Diamond (2006).

Djimon Gaston Hounsou was born in Cotonou in the West African country of Benin in 1964. His parents were Albertine and Pierre Hounsou, a cook. He emigrated to Paris (IMDb writes Lyon) with his brother, Edmond Hounshou, when he was 12 (some sources say 13). Soon after arriving there, he dropped out of school and became homeless. He spent several years living on the streets of Paris until he was discovered by chance at the age of 22 by fashion designer Thierry Mugler. Mugler encouraged Hounsou to pursue a modelling career and used him for many of his advertising campaigns. Some of his pictures appeared in Mugler's illustrated book, 'Thierry Mugler Photographs'. Hounsou also collaborated with the renowned photographer Herb Ritts, who was known for his black and white photographs and portrayed Hounsou in his photo book 'Men and Women'. His modelling led him to acting. Hounsou first came into contact with film in 1988 through director David Fincher. Fincher used him as a dancer in three of his music videos: Steve Winwood's ‘Roll with It’, Madonna's ‘Express Yourself’ and Paula Abdul's ‘Straight Up’. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actor. He largely overcame the language barrier by watching English-language TV documentaries. Thanks to an appearance in Janet Jackson's music video ‘Love Will Never Do Without You’, Hounsou came to the attention of agents and casting directors. Guest roles in TV series followed, including as a bouncer in the series Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990). Hounsou made his film debut in the comedy Without You I'm Nothing (John Boskovich, 1990) as the ex-boyfriend of lead actress Sandra Bernhard. After Jonathan Kaplan's drama Unlawful Entry (1992) with Kurt Russell and Ray Liotta, he landed a major supporting role as Horus Wache in Roland Emmerich's Science Fiction film Stargate (1994), alongside Kurt Russell and James Spader. Hounsou was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his role leading role as Cinqué in Steven Spielberg's historical drama Amistad (1997). The film tells the true story of the revolt of Africans in 1839 on the slave ship La Amistad. They overpower the crew and force the helmsman to set sail for Africa. However, they are tricked and arrive in the United States. The role for which the actor learnt the African language Mende to appear more authentic marked his breakthrough in Hollywood. Hounsou continued to act in major productions but was subsequently subscribed to supporting roles, especially in English-language films. According to Wikipedia (German), this was mainly due to his strong linguistic accent.

Apart from films, Djimon Hounsou appeared several times in television series. He played Mobalage Ikabo, a Nigerian refugee illegally travelling to the USA, in six episodes of the medical series ER (1999). Hounsou portrayed corrupt arms dealer Kazari Bomani in three episodes of Alias (2003-2004) alongside the title heroine Jennifer Garner. In the cinema, Hounsou became even better known as the fearless warrior Juba in the box-office hit Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000). Juba befriends the title hero, Maximus (Russell Crowe), who is bent on revenge. Two years later, Hounsou played the role of Abou Fatma, the saviour and companion of Lieutenant Faversham (Heath Ledger), in the literary adaptation The Four Feathers (Shekhar Kapur, 2002). In 2004, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film In America (Jim Sheridan, 2002), making him the first black African to receive an Oscar nomination. The film is about an Irish immigrant family starting a new life in New York. Alongside Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton, Hounsou plays the embittered painter Mateo, who has withdrawn from the outside world due to his HIV infection and finds new courage to face life after meeting the Irish family. In America ultimately failed to cash in on any of its three nominations. In 2007, Hounsou was again nominated for an Oscar for Blood Diamond (Edward Zwick, 2006), in which he co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio. The film title refers to diamonds mined in war zones and sold in support of these conflicts. Hounsou plays a poor fisherman who gets caught up in a conflict with diamond smugglers during the civil war in Sierra Leone. In 2010, he took on the role of Caliban in Julie Taymor's Shakespeare adaptation of The Tempest. In the film, he acted alongside Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina and Chris Cooper. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he portrayed Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy (James Gunn, 2014), Captain Marvel (Anna Roden, Ryan Fleck, 2019) and the animated anthology TV series What If...? (2021). In the DC Extended Universe, he appears as the Fisherman King in Aquaman (James Wan, 2018) and as the wizard Shazam in Shazam! (David F. Sandberg, 2019), Black Adam (Jaume Collet-Serra, 2022) and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (David F. Sandberg, 2023). Hounsou made his directorial debut with the documentary film In Search of Voodoo: Roots to Heaven (2018), which examines the history, nature and religious practices of West African Vodun. In 2005, Hounsou travelled to Mali with the development aid organisation Oxfam to gain an impression of the living conditions of the people there, which are characterised by poverty. Since then, he has been an ambassador for Oxfam. In 2008, Hounsou married Japanese-American actress and model Kimora Lee through an African rite. Together, they had a son, Kenzo Lee Hounsou, in 2009. Hounsou and Simmons, who were never legally married in the United States, announced their separation in 2012. In 2025, Djimon Hounsou claimed that, throughout his career, he has encountered challenges like those experienced by other Black actors in Hollywood, including being typecast. He said he was always getting "unfair compensation." Hounsou blamed systemic racism for this predicament, saying that, despite having been twice nominated for an Academy Award, he is still "struggling financially to make a living."

The Italian swordfish boats in the Messina Straits in Southern Italy are so extreme they make flashy American swordfish boats look positively sensible.

Basically, the helmsman is electrically winched to the top of the scaffold mast some 50ft in the air and a chap with a harpoon sits on a platform at the end of 50ft or so long bowsprit. They then sneak up on an unsuspecting swordfish resting close to the surface and harpoon it.

The boats (for good reason) only go so sea in calm weather.

Swordfish in Messina are highly prized and consequently are very expensive!

The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, or the Mao Mausoleum, is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death. Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed, and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. This highly popular attraction is located in the middle of Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, the capital of China. On this site had previously stood the Gate of China, the southern (main) gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The remains of the Great Helmsman, as he is sometimes known, are on display for public viewing. People line up for hundreds of feet every day to see the former chairman, many paying tribute to him with flowers that can be rented at the entrance on the north side. There is a souvenir shop at the exit on the south side. [Wikipedia.org]

Designed by Murray Cormack and derived from their longer NorthBay 17 design, SeaShepherd is a single chine displacement hullform custom adapted to operate stern-to the seas while transferring a pilot off the North Sea port of Aberdeen and also to achieve a continuous service speed of 11.25 knots and a bollard pull of 6 tonnes.

The steel displacement hulled vessel measures 15.25m LOA, beam 5.1m, draught 1.84m and was developed from larger Murray Cormack designed pilot launches for other ports in the north of Scotland.

The vessel will work year round up to three miles offshore and will also be used for general harbour duties including pushing/ pulling larger vessels within the harbour confines and to transport crew personnel to and from ships anchored in the approaches to the harbour. A sweeping sheerline was used to facilitate the boarding of low freeboard vessels midships.

The lines of the vessel were faired electronically by Maritime Lofting Services in Cramlington and the data transferred into kit form by the profiling division of Macduff Shipyards Limited.

Fabrication and fitting out were completed under cover at the firm's base in Macduff, Aberdeenshire.

The hull and superstructure was built under Lloyds Survey with scantlings in accordance with Lloyds Rules - 'Pilot', G2 service area, and a hull certificate provided. Code survey was undertaken by Pirie and Smith Ltd of Aberdeen, representing the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and the vessel was issued with a Pilot Boat Certificate for category 6.

Aberdeen Harbour's design brief included a low noise requirement both within and outside the vessel when underway.

Centa flexible drive shafts and thrust bearings were fitted between the propeller shafts and the resiliently mounted Scania DI12 41M engines. These each produce 355hp at 1,800rpm and are matched to Twin Disc MG5090A seven degree downdrive 2.43:1 ratio reverse reduction gearboxes. Fleetwood sterngear and Lips five bladed propellers are driven through Centa-Drive units with flexible couplings and thrust bearings.

An Onan MDKBD 13.5kW 240V generator is provided in a sound-proof box and a wet exhaust system uses Halyard silencers.

Dutch noise consultants Van Cappellen were employed to specify on-board acoustic noise reducing measures and provide noise level predictions in the wheelhouse and forward accommodation. On trials 65 dB(A) was achieved in the wheelhouse and forward cabin at full power.

The flattened bow profile is strengthened and heavily fendered for pushing and a 6 tonne towing hook with remote release, which was supplied by Britannia Marine Towing Equipment, is mounted aft.

A clutched hydraulic pump is arranged on a drive from the port gearbox powering a Kort KT45DD bow thruster, a Spencer Carter capstan, and MOB recovery derricks and winches manufactured by the yard.

The steel hull has four watertight bulkheads for subdivision and also incorporates four deck lifting lugs set inboard of the pilot / crew handrails for craning the vessel out of the water for servicing at Aberdeen.

Comfortable live-onboard accommodation is provided for two crew in the forward part of the vessel below decks including a two berth/settee cabin, toilet compartment and galley facility.

An Onan genset powers heaters and galley equipment at sea.

The aluminium wheelhouse has seating for up to eight persons.

The helm console forward is arranged with a steering position on centre together with controls to port and navigation aids all within reach of the helmsman.

A second set of engine controls is fitted to starboard to allow the helmsman improved visibility when using the MOB rescue boom over the starboard side.

Hydraulically powered gull-wing MOB rescue booms are fitted across the wheelhouse canopy aft, operable for either wing of the wheelhouse when recovering a person from the water. This system has been used on a number of Murray Cormack pilot boats operating in the north of Scotland where the arrangement was initially developed. Scramble nets are stowed in recesses formed in the wheelhouse sides below the windows. Aluminium luggage bins are provided on the aft deck for use when transporting anchored off ship's crews ashore.

Wheelhouse equipment supplied by Furuno (UK) Ltd includes M1833NT radar/plotter display unit, SC60 satellite compass, Ultrasonic wind sensor, FCV600L/MSD colour sounder, and Navnet station. Simrad Ltd's contribution to a comprehensive fit out includes Raytheon Ray 430 loudhailer c/w two speakers, Sailor RT4822 DSC VHF, Sailor RT 2048 VHF and LS80 internal loudspeaker for it, two Sailor N240 converters, and two Icom IC-M21 handheld VHF c/w chargers.

Sea Shepherd displaces 44 tonnes, has 3,100 litre fuel capacity, 450 litre fresh water capacity, and is crewed by two with a capacity for 10 passengers.

While his brother, the actual captain, takes care of other duties, a young boy aged approx. 10 drives this boat carrying tourists from the shore to the seasonally flooded community of Kampong Phluk (កំពង់ភ្លុក), Cambodia - November 2022

Photo showing a group of US Marines on the quay at Lisahally prior to boarding a landing craft during a training exercise. July 1943

The landing craft in the photo is an LCV (Landing Craft Vehicle) type capable of carrying either 36 troops, a Jeep-sized vehicle or 10,000 lb of cargo. Constructed with a wooden hull, the craft measured 36' 4" long and had a top speed of 9 knots.

Although more adaptable than the earlier LCP (Landing Craft Personnel) the craft were themselves superseded by the largely similar LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle, Personnel). One of the major differences was the prominent exposed standing position for the helmsman on the LCV was removed and steering functions repositioned to something akin to an open cockpit in the hull, affording slightly more protection under fire.

Only 2366 LCV were built as opposed to 23,358 LCVP. Note the railway line and USNOB storage warehouses in the background.

Teignmouth Harbour Commission

The Harbour Commission is a Trust Port created by Statute.

The principal Order is the Teignmouth Harbour Order 1924

as amended by the Teignmouth Harbour Revision Order 2003

Specifications:

The general arrangement shows a typical high-speed chine form hull, with reverse sheer and a narrow 1-man landing ramp forward. The aft 25% of the hull, behind an insulated watertight bulkhead, is dedicated to the machinery consisting of two 460 kW Scania DSI 14 diesel engines driving KaMeWa FF water jets. A cabin with seating for 20 troops, together with their equipment, occupies the mid-body of the craft. The wheelhouse "module" is splinter protected and located between the troop compartment and the bow ramp landing area. The space accommodates the helmsman to starboard and the CO/navigator to port in a compact, cockpit type, layout with an extra chair in the center line for an instructor/troop commander.

The weapon fit comprises a 12.7 mm machine gun (or a 40 mm grenade launcher) carried on a ring mount aft of the wheelhouse and a double 12.7 mm mounted in front of the helmsman’s position. The twin mount is fixed in traverse and aimed by pointing the craft - hence the elevation and fire controls are incorporated in the maneuvering levers at the helmsman’s position. Additionally, the CB 90 H can also carry 2.8 ton of mines or the modified Hellfire-type RBS 17 SSM system.

The standard manually operated 12.7 mm MG can be replaced with stabilized remote controlled weapons for the ring mount gun position, even of a higher caliber. Stabilized fire control and launcher arrangements for the RBS 17 missile system and the twin barrel 12 cm AMOS mortar system are possible future improvements currently under development to further enhance of the flexibility of the CB 90 concept.

One of the very important characteristics of the CB 90 H is its low profile. Not only does it project a small target area and a low radar signature, when loaded on a standard low loader the boat, with a total height of less than 4.5 meters, can be transported anywhere over land, on RoRo vessels and even by air!

The Swedish Amphibious Corps has used this to its advantage when forming a rapid deployment, go-anywhere amphibious task force. Dockstavarvet has assisted by designing and delivering a system of slings, cradles, wagons and lashing material for a variety of transportation modes.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

The structure is a Grade I listed building and a World Heritage Site.

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a navigable aqueduct that carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in North-East Wales. The 18-arched stone and cast iron structure, which took ten years to design and build, was completed in 1805. It is now the oldest and longest navigable aqueduct in Great Britain and the highest in the world.

The supporting arches, four for each span, are in the form of cast-iron ribs, each cast as three voussoirs with external arches cast with an un-pierced web to give greater strength, at the cost of extra weight. Using cast iron in this way, in the same manner as the stone arch it supersedes, makes use of the material's strength in compression.

Cast plates are laid transversely to form the bed of the canal trough. The trough is not fastened to the arches, but lugs are cast into the plates to fit over the rib arches to prevent movement. The aqueduct was left for six months with water inside to check that it was watertight.

Pedestrians, and the horses once used for towing, are protected from falling from the aqueduct by railings on the outside edge of the towpath, but the holes in the top flange of the other side of the trough, capable of mounting railings, were never used. The trough sides rise only about 6 inches (15 cm) above the water level, less than the depth of freeboard of an empty narrow boat, so the helmsman of the boat has no visual protection from the impression of being at the edge of an abyss.

The Sultan’s Helmsman -- a novel of the Ottoman Navy and Renaissance Italy

Available from www.Amazon.com. A Turkish translation will be published soon by Grup Yayınları, Istanbul.

September 1494 -- Amid the chaos of Charles VIII’s devastating invasion of Renaissance Italy, a squadron of Turkish galleys slips out of Istanbul under cover of night, and disappears west into the autumnal gales. Aboard are three Ottoman diplomats, a papal nuncio, and a fortune in gold ducats. The unforeseen consequences of their dangerous mission threaten to destabilize the papacy and alter the military alliances of Europe. A tale of seagoing adventure and actual historical events, The Sultan’s Helmsman is also a philosophical novel exploring eastern and western ways of thought. Kachak -- the helmsman of the Turkish galley White Falcon -- is a fugitive from war-torn Europe who has been educated at the elite Ottoman palace school. When the west attempts to reclaim him, he must rely on his training, and on the loyalty of his friends, to make himself the person of his own choosing. While patrolling the Aegean, Akdoğan’s crew captures evidence that the Knights of Rhodes are secretly violating their treaty with the Ottoman Empire. Corsairs sailing under the Knights’ protection are attacking cargo ships of all nations and faiths. Capturing the cargoes and passengers, they extract ransoms, colluding with merchants who become rich by lending ransom money at high interest.

During this period, Spanish persecution of the Moors and Jews increases. Sultan II Bayezid sends the Ottoman navy to Andalusia to evacuate them, commenting, “Why do people call this king wise when he is expelling from his kingdom the very people whose talents will enrich mine?” Kachak and his shipmates take part in these daring voyages, climbing the cliffs at night “with lanterns in their teeth” to lead the refugees to safety.

One of the Moors evacuated aboard Kachak’s ship is a printer, Olaya, who lives in a world of dangerous books and new ideas permeating the Mediterranean. Later, back in Istanbul, Niccolo del Guercino, manager of the Medici bank branch there, seeks Olaya’s help finding rare books by eastern philosophers to send to Florence. At Olaya’s suggestion, Kachak agrees to translate “some of the most dangerous books in the world.”

On the death of the King of Naples, the French King Charles VIII claims the throne. The Borgia Pope Alexander VI -- who had earlier encouraged Charles in hopes that Charles would use Naples harbor to launch a crusade against Turkey and to capture Jerusalem – realizes he has made a terrible mistake. In one of history’s strangest secret negotiations, Alexander sends his nuncio, Georgio Bocciardi, to Istanbul to request money and support from Sultan Bayezid – at the same time the pope, in public, is proclaiming a crusade against the Muslim world.

Upon docking in Italy, the Turkish sailors are embroiled in the violence and intrigue of Renaissance politics. While escorting Bocciardi and the Ottoman diplomats to the Vatican, they are ambushed by soldiers of the Prefect of Rome, who is betraying the pope on behalf of the French. Charles VIII publishes translations of letters supposedly captured from Bocciardi. These allegedly ask the pope to murder Bayezid’s younger brother – Prince Cem – who had earlier fled to the Knights of Rhodes…only to be used as a pawn in a cruel diplomatic game.

Convinced that the letters published by Charles are forgeries, Kachak and his shipmates desperately try to survive in an Italy torn by invasion. Their little squadron – alone and far from home -- may be Turkey’s first line of defense. As town after town falls to Charles’ troops, Kachak’s shipmates find unexpected allies among the citizens of Mantua and Venice striving to restore Italy’s freedom.

Ragnorak

The atrium in each of the Disney Cruise Line ships feature a character statue. The Magic has Helmsman Mickey, the Wonder has Ariel, the Fantasy has Minnie Mouse and, the Dream features Admiral Donald who is finally getting some respect!

If you look closely you can see the chandelier in Donald's eye.

The atrium is typically a busy place on the ship, it it well worth the loss of sleep to check it out in the early AM hours before guest start mulling around.

A few years ago. windshield frame design and fabrication required much mental gymnastics on my part to ensure a problem free result.

But, Einstein failed to leave sufficient wood at the top of the helmsman and passenger frames for the installation of windshield wiper hardware.

The picture shows a 2 1/2" wide piece of maghogany epoxied in place as the first step in creating space for wiper hardware.

Ragnorak

Manufacturer Provided Description

The Trintella 42 combines luxurious cruising comfort with exciting performance, and can be handled easily by a crew of two on long ocean voyages. In keeping with the Trintella marque, the 42 offers an irresistible attraction to those who appreciate true character and understated elegance. The hallmark of each Trintella Yacht is undoubtedly the quality of craftsmanship that is evident in every detail of design and construction. World-renowned for advanced design and build quality, Trintella has created more than 1,000 fine oceangoing yachts in over 44 years. Steeped in Dutch craftsmanship, Trintella Yachts builds on its heritage to incorporate the very latest construction techniques and technological advances. The 42 is borne from a unique blend of Ron Holland's vast experience in designing the world's most prestigious yachts and Rene van der Velden's flair for interior design. The Trintella 42 is a yacht that meets the highest specifications to satisfy the aspirations and expectations of the most demanding customer. The Trintella 42 truly is a joy to sail, completely capable of handling any seas in superior comfort and safety. A distinguishing feature of all Trintellas is their uncluttered teak decks and the hugely comfortable covered guest cockpit featuring Trintella's hallmark "Doghouse" which is both practical and secure. There is a separate helmsman's cockpit aft, which has been ergonomically designed to be safe and comfortable; it provides clear views while keeping all controls within easy reach. While her comforts and luxurious appearance are her most obvious attributes, her performance is underpinned by the application of the most sophisticated technology. A modern, powerful rig and sail plan is designed with the specific objective of providing ease of handling without compromising performance. A custom mast incorporating triple spreaders angled at 22 degrees means there is no need for running backstays. This mainsail arrangement is further complemented by a self-tacking jib; therefore, the boat can be tacked by the helmsman in a delightfully unfussed manner. Computer aided design dramatically improves hull and keel design providing superior stability and speed, while the use of aramid composites makes for enhanced safety characteristics. A sandwich construction, using the technologically advanced SCRIMP process, ensures great strength and lightweight qualities; as well, osmosis protection is enhanced by the SCRIMP construction process and use of vinylester resin in the laminate. Advanced engineering techniques, complemented by efficient sail management systems, ensure the Trintella 42 is a thoroughly modern yacht that combines the best traditional values of craftsmanship with the sophisticated demands of the modern age. The luxuriously comfortable interior of the Trintella 42 is both spacious and highly functional with generous headroom of 1.90 meters or more throughout. Practical features abound and incorporate ergonomic considerations including the heavily insulated walk-in engine room that will also discretely house options such as a generator, water maker, and hydraulics systems. Thoughtful but less obvious details include cedar lined hanging lockers in each cabin to keep your clothing fresh and moth-free. Above all, Rene van der Velden's particular talent combines careful planning of the interior spaces with the delicate art of selecting woods and fabrics to create an atmosphere that makes extended cruising a constant delight. Finely styled, and elegant without being ostentatious, you can choose a wide selection of upholstery fabrics and materials to create a yacht that is as comfortable as your home and expresses your own individuality to the same degree. Available in two layouts, the Trintella 42 can provide accommodation for up to six people, with a saloon that has comfortable seating for six complemented by a spacious galley designed to be safe and secure in heavy seas. You can choose to have two large cabins fore and aft (each with en- suite head and separate shower compartment) with a comprehensively equipped navigation station carefully positioned on the starboard of the saloon, or you can choose to have the chart table moved to the doghouse, allowing two bunks to be provided there instead. Specification Each Trintella is built to the highest quality in terms of design specification, craftsmanship, and technological development, thereby ensuring quality standards you can trust. For further reassurance, each yacht is 100 percent guaranteed for one year from delivery, with all fixtures, fittings, and equipment installed in the yacht also carrying the manufacturers' warranties and guarantees. There are many variations and options that you can choose to incorporate in the design and construction of your yacht. However you design and fit your boat, it will naturally be dockside tested before delivery, and then will undergo a full technical sail trial after delivery.

Roman funerary monument for a man named Gaius Gentius Valens. Made from dark grey limestone. The Latin inscription is complete and is enclosed within double lines, with letters of better form and more carefully cut than usual, though the last lines are cramped, making letters E, T, and I almost indistinguishable.

TO THE GUARDIAN SPIRITS OF THE

UNDERWORLD

FOR GAIUS GENTIUS VALENS A SAILOR IN

THE PRAETORIAN FLEET AT MISENUM ON

THE QUADRIREME ‘MINERVA’.

FROM DALMATIA HE LIVED 40 YEARS AND

SERVED ON THIS [SHIP] 19 YEARS.

This is the funerary relief of a sailor based at Misenum who sailed on the Minerva, a quadrireme in the Praetorian fleet. His name was Gaius Gentius VALENS and he came from Dalmatia on the east coast of the Adriatic. He was 40 years old when he died having served in the navy for 19 years. The inscription is undated however the honorific "Praetorian" was first given to the Misenum fleet in 69 AD.

Did Gaius sail with Pliny the Elder, Admiral of the Praetorian fleet, on 24 August 79 AD to rescue those trapped by the eruption of Vesuvius? Approaching Stabiae, the helmsman of Pliny's ship wanted to turn back, but the Admiral landed with the immortal words, Fortes fortuna juvat - '(the goddess) Fortuna favours the brave'. It didn't help. Overweight and in poor health, Pliny died on the beach, overcome by volcanic fumes."

Here is the info on Medea, Jason and the Fleece thanks to Wikipedia.;-)

Medea's role began after Jason arrived from Iolcus to Colchis to claim his inheritance and throne by retrieving the Golden Fleece. In the most complete surviving account, the Argonautica of Apollonius, Medea fell in love with him and promised to help him, but only on the condition that if he succeeded, he would take her with him and marry her. Jason agreed. In a familiar mythic motif, Aeëtes promised to give him the fleece, but only if he could perform certain tasks. First, Jason had to plough a field with fire-breathing oxen that he had to yoke himself. Medea gave him an unguent with which to anoint himself and his weapons, to protect him from the bulls' fiery breath. Then, Jason had to sow the teeth of a dragon in the ploughed field (compare the myth of Cadmus). The teeth sprouted into an army of warriors. Jason was forewarned by Medea, however, and knew to throw a rock into the crowd. Unable to determine where the rock had come from, the soldiers attacked and defeated each other. Finally, Aeëtes made Jason fight and kill the sleepless dragon that guarded the fleece. Medea put the beast to sleep with her narcotic herbs. Jason then took the fleece and sailed away with Medea, as he had promised. Apollonius says that Medea only helped Jason in the first place because Hera had convinced Aphrodite or Eros to cause Medea to fall in love with him. Medea distracted her father as they fled by killing her brother Absyrtus. In some versions, Medea is said to have dismembered his body and scattered his parts on an island, knowing her father would stop to retrieve them for proper burial; in other versions, it is Absyrtus himself who pursued them, and was killed by Jason. During the fight, Atalanta was seriously wounded, but Medea healed her.

According to some versions, Medea and Jason stopped on her aunt Circe's island so that she could be cleansed after the murder of her brother, relieving her of blame for the deed.

Jason et Médée by Gustave Moreau (1865).

On the way back to Thessaly, Medea prophesied that Euphemus, the Argo's helmsman, would one day rule over all Libya. This came true through Battus, a descendant of Euphemus.

The Argo then reached the island of Crete, guarded by the bronze man, Talos (Talus). Talos had one vein which went from his neck to his ankle, bound shut by a single bronze nail. According to Apollodorus, Talos was slain either when Medea drove him mad with drugs, deceived him that she would make him immortal by removing the nail, or was killed by Poeas's arrow (Apollodorus 1.140). In the Argonautica, Medea hypnotized him from the Argo, driving him mad so that he dislodged the nail, ichor flowed from the wound, and he bled to death (Argonautica 4.1638). After Talos died, the Argo landed.

While Jason searched for the Golden Fleece, Hera, who was still angry at Pelias, conspired to make him fall in love with Medea, who she hoped would kill Pelias. When Jason and Medea returned to Iolcus, Pelias still refused to give up his throne. Medea conspired to have Pelias' own daughters kill him. She told them she could turn an old ram into a young ram by cutting up the old ram and boiling it (alternatively, she did this with Aeson, Jason's father). During the demonstration, a live, young ram jumped out of the pot. Excited, the girls cut their father into pieces and threw him into a pot. Having killed Pelias, Jason and Medea fled to Corinth.

GV II

Also Known As: KING'S ARMS HOTEL

A public house, dating from the early-C19, with some alterations in the late-C19.

MATERIALS: The building is constructed from painted brick, under a hipped roof covered in slate.

PLAN: The plan is single depth, on a corner plot, with a curved corner; the building is orientated roughly north-south.

EXTERIOR: The building has two storeys and an attic and consists of a seven-window range. It has a left-hand, two-window curved end beneath a curved roof, and a half-hipped right-hand gable. Left-hand end doorway has an architrave, pediment and panelled door, and a vehicle doorway one bay from the right-hand end. The first floor has flat brick arches over six-over-six-pane and three-over-nine-pane sashes, with blind first-floor windows in the fourth, seventh and eighth bays from the right; a partial ground-floor Venetian window in the curved end has a blocked fanlight, and is flanked by horned three-over-nine-pane sashes. To the right, the windows have segmental arches over a two-light casement and a horned two-over-two-pane sash; to the ground floor, there are late-C19, paired round-arched windows to the left with moulded archivolts, keys and stops to plate-glass sashes. The right-hand gable has a first-floor eight-over-twelve-pane sash.
