The National War Memorial, also known as "The Response," is a cenotaph symbolizing the sacrifice of all Canadian Armed Forces personnel who have served Canada in time of war in the cause of peace and freedom — past, present and future. The memorial is the site of the national Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11.
The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have posted sentries at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier since 2007. On Oct. 22, 2014, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was tragically killed while on sentry duty. Sentry duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider now holds an even deeper meaning for both the CAF and the Canadian public.

Amazingly, this is the 1000th picture that I have posted here on my Flickr photo-stream!
To mark this historic occasion, I thought it would be appropriate to show myself doing what I do for every photo-shoot – getting myself made-up, so I can look my best!
I don’t know exactly if or when I will be celebrating posting my 2000th image here on Flickr, but I do hope it happens some day! This photo-stream has been a gateway for me to have so many experiences that I never dreamed would be possible. It has been an amazing journey, during which I have made so many wonderful new friends - and discovered so much about myself. Some of these friendships have remained internet-based, while others have also acquired a face-to-face dimension. But all of my friends here mean a great deal to me, and I thank you for adding so much fun and happiness to my life - ever since that day back in March 2009 when I shyly posted my first three images online!

Here is a brief guide to the final group of eight aristocratic ladies who are entered for our Sodality Trials next weekend! There are in total 32 entries for the trials, and a total of eight of these ladies will be invited to join the Sisterhood once the trials have been completed. This will make a new grand total of 21 titled ladies to comprise the Sodality. Breeding, brains, wealth and beauty are essential requirements for membership, but our trials will determine which ladies also have the moral decadence, corrupting sensuality and insatiable sexual appetites to qualify for full membership!!

A Summer afternoon and my work is almost done for the day. I wanted to kick back and enjoy the warmth. With all of the garden space here there is plenty to keep one busy. Having seen no sign of the elusive Rusty Blackbird at Burnaby Lake it seemed I had been led on a Snipe Hunt.
I have at least two dozen of these caterpillars (the others are still quite small) on a large fennel plant. This is also called Parsley Worm--likes parsley and dill, as well. Yes, the caterpillars eat the plants--but I can sacrifice a plant or two for the sake of increasing the population of those gorgeous (and ecologically valuable) butterflies. Love 'em! (Notice the egg below him and the smaller caterpillar behind his feet!)
Update (the next day): This poor fellow apparently became a bird snack. Sigh. However, several of his siblings remain, growing rapidly. I'm hoping at least a few will survive to become butterflies.

So far we have only ever looked at the fairy forest in Bohemian Switzerland that I recently discovered from the outside. Or we stood at the edge of the forest and looked outside.
Today we are in the middle of it all, wandering through the sun-drenched veil of fog. What a moment.
The light and the mist make this forest a place full of magic and mysticism.
Unfortunately, I have only very rarely had the opportunity to find and capture such a fascinating atmosphere. I am all the more grateful that I succeeded here.
It's not for nothing that I've been pulling out pictures for the past three months, all of which were taken on that one morning in March. And there are still four left.
Bisher haben wir uns den von mir neu entdeckten Feen wald in der Böhmischen Schweiz immer nur von außen angesehen. Oder wir standen am Waldrand und haben nach draußen geblickt.
Heute sind wir mitten drin und streifen durch den sonnendurchfluteten Nebelschleier. Was für ein Moment.
Das Licht und der Nebel machen diesen Wald zu einem Ort voller Magie und Mystik.
Es war mir bisher leider nur sehr selten vergönnt, eine so faszinierende Stimmung vorzufinden und festzuhalten. Um so dankbarer bin ich, dass es mir hier gelungen ist.
Nicht umsonst hole ich seit drei Monaten immer wieder Bilder hervor, die alle an diesem einen Morgen im März entstanden sind. Und es sind auch immer noch vier übrig.

We have had a few days away in Wales. One of the things on my 'to do' list was to see Dolphins in the wild.
I had previously seen them many times over while in the Navy but had never had the chance to appreciate these wonderful mammals close up and in their playground.
These Dolphins form part of the Cardigan Bay pod, some of which are here all year and others join the pod swelling numbers in the summer when the food source is good.
There were about 15-18 in this group and they swam around the boat for about 20 minutes before going off to see other craft in the area. They were not fed or encouraged to swim with the boats, they did it because they wanted to.
If the chance arises, take it. It was a great couple of hours.
I have finally upgraded my equipment. Soon selling my old camera and some lenses. Now I am a proud owner of a Canon 5D Mark II which my previous upload was shot on.
I like to mark the arrival of a new camera with a good old mirror shot.
I have used my friends Mark II a few times now, results of which I am still yet to upload, an outtake from a series can be seen here

A day out in the Cotswolds at the end of November 2024 on the look out for Short-eared Owls.
Eventually mid afternoon a couple of Shorties came into view. They were quite distant.
Short-eared Owls are medium sized Owls with mottled brown bodies, pale under-wings and yellow eyes. They are often seen hunting during the day. In winter, there's an influx of continental birds from Scandinavia, Russia, Iceland to the UK.
I think I was having a "brain fart" as not sure what was going on with the shutter speed/aperture/ISO which were all over the place ?
Having not done a street portrait for a while, I wanted to take advantage of the sudden relatively good weather and headed out into Soho to see what I could get.
Almost immediately I saw Nerea come out of the Photographers Gallery and i knew I had to ask her for a portrait. She was immediately receptive and luckily I had this wooden background which complemented her clothes.
This was shot with natural light with a reflector underneath to fill in the shadows.
Nerea is of Spanish origin and works in Finance. We had a great chat as she is about to go to India and I was able to give some advice.
Amine, my last strangers question, was to describe her perfect partner. She described her perfect partner as someone who she could be herself with and someone with whom she could comfortably be in her bubble. I asked her whether she was an introvert based on her answer but she considered herself to be an extrovert. I told her that introverts get their energy from having me time - she then agreed maybe that she's an introvert.
Her question for the next stranger was "If you could be invisible, what is the first thing that you would do?"

I have been busy this evening researching information about this tiny little pigeon who arrived in our garden this afternoon.. It is Australian. I can only think it must be an escapee as they do not live in the UK but are bred in captivity here. It spent about an hour in the garden eating seeds and drinking water with the Sparrows. It flew off to the fields. Has anyone else ever seen one and is it possible for it to survive our cold winters is the question I ask?
I have been trying all summer to get a shot of one of the hang gliders that goes over the village on summer evenings, managed a couple but one was a distant shot with my mobile and the other the light very poor. Then yesterday I heard the familiar noise and looked up to see one right above the garden - by the time I'd rushed indoors to get the camera it was really too far away but I'm using it anyway. If I get a better one I can replace it.
120 pictures in 2020 (116) what goes up
I have spent the last hour trying to figure out the names of the fells in the distance but failed. You you know, please let me know. I took this photo while driving from Muker to Preston via Kirkby Stephen on Monday evening (around 6.30pm) and the light was just sublime.
I felt compelled to pull up the minibus, jump out, walk a hundred yards to the highest point around me and set up my Canon 5D MK4 with the 24-70mm f4 lens. The light intensified as the clouds rolled right to left. The main fell in the middle of the frame was just being kept in check by the heavy set dark, brooding sky above it. Just a magical moment to witness and capture on camera.
