L55 series - 1980-85

aka Mira & Domino

Not too many months later, we decided the Cortina was too big and expensive to run, so we swapped it for the cute, red sunbeam, but we didn't keep it very long, as it kept overheating and the fan would stay on ages after it had parked!!!

The Chrysler Sunbeam is a small supermini 3-door hatchback manufactured by Chrysler Europe at the former Rootes Group factory in Linwood in Scotland. The Sunbeam's development was funded by a British government grant with the aim to keep the Linwood plant running, and the small car was based on the larger Hillman Avenger also manufactured there. After the takeover of Chrysler's European operations by PSA, the model was renamed Talbot Sunbeam and continued in production until 1981

The Toyota Voltz was a five-door hatchback sold from August 2002 to the end of 2004. It was assembled by NUMMI in Fremont, in the U.S. state of California and marketed by Toyota in its home market of Japan, but curtailed after a disappointing sales volume of just over 10,000 units. The Voltz was produced alongside the Pontiac Vibe in Fremont by NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc), a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. This vehicle is known as the Pontiac Vibe (itself a version of the Toyota Matrix) in North America. The Vibe was exported to the Japanese market (with minor badging changes and right-hand drive configuration) as the Toyota Voltz, and was exclusive to Toyota Japanese dealerships called Toyota Netz Store. Whereas its exterior styling is identical to the Vibe, some interior details differ, matching the interior of the Matrix instead. Curiously, the North American Toyota-branded Matrix was not sold in Japan.

The Renault 16 debuted in 1965. Considered by many as the progenitor of the modern hatchback, the R16 featured a mid-size body design with the internal comfort of a saloon, and the load flexibility of a wagon.

The layout, aped that of the Citroen Traction Avant and DS, with the engine mounted longitudinally, rearward of the front axle, with the drive taken forward. This layout provided good axle balance and inertial properties, but made mechanical servicing to the engine very difficult.

Front suspension was by double wishbones, with long longitudinal torsion bar springs providing supple suspension travel. This was enhanced further by a rear suspension with trailing arms, each sprung by a transverse torsion bar anchored to the opposite side of the body. This made for the unusual arrangement that the wheelbase differed between each side of the car, as there was a 70mm offset between the torsion bar positions. The R16 is noted for having the longest suspension travel in any passenger car of the time.

Performance was brisk enough for the time, particularly for the 16TS (shown) which featured a Cross-flow 1,565cc engine producing 84 PS (63 kW) permitting 160 km/h from a relatively aerodynamic body design.

Being French, the R16 was also full of small deign quirks, some endearing, and others frustrating. Having owned two myself, the very feeble fan during hot weather, paired with a feeble heating system during cold, was not ideal where I lived.

Overall, the 16 was a landmark car in design and execution. This model is about the fourth version of this Renault 16 that I have created,

2016 Mazda3 5-Door Hatchback

The 1510 series was based on the 1975-1979 Simca-Chrysler 1307 / 1308 / 1309, which was designed by Roy Axe. This was a very modern looking car at that time.

The 1979 restyle brought us the 1510 hatchback. The 1980 4-door version was called Solara.

These two models were rebranded as Simca-Talbot after PSA had taken over Chrysler-Europe in late 1978.

In the UK this car was called Talbot Alpine.

Developed by Citroën with the help of the French State after the second oil crisis, the AX is released in 1986. The engineers complied to a simple set of requests: the new city car had to be easy to use, economical and inexpensive to produce and maintain. Intended to replace the aging 2CV and the failed Axel, it was Citroën’s second commercial success.

The AX that we present today is a TZX with the 1.1l engine. This version was one of the best equipped, intended for demanding customers. Its equipment includes velvet seats, a radio and central locking. Its performances and comfort make it still a perfectly capable car, even by today’s standards!

- Delivered new to the Nespoli Collection in Italy

- Only circa 5,400 kilometres recorded

- Stunning 'time-warp' condition

- Renault leather wallet and all books

'When other manufacturers do daft things with hatchbacks they call them concept cars and mothball them after a couple of motor shows and press releases. When Renault caricatures a Clio's bodywork and puts a V6 where the rear seats should be, it goes into production.' – Evo magazine.

Reprising its Renault 5 Turbo – a 'homologation special' built in limited numbers for Group B rallying between 1979 and 1986 – France's largest motor manufacturer introduced the equally outrageous Clio V6 in 2001. Like its exotic forebear, the V6 abandoned the original Clio's front engine/front-wheel drive layout, instead carrying its engine where the rear seats would have been. Needless to say, this entailed some radical re-engineering. This was undertaken in the UK by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, which was entrusted with building the first series of the Clio V6. Tuned to produce 227 bhp, the 24-valve engine was sourced from the rival PSA Group.

This example of Renault's instantly collectible 'modern classic' was delivered new to the famous Nespoli Collection in northern Italy. Finished in silver with dark blue leather upholstery featuring grey cloth inserts, the car displays a total of only some 5.400 km on the odometer and is presented in stunning 'time-warp' condition. Offered with cancelled Italian registration documents and the original Renault leather wallet, complete with all books, it represents a rare opportunity to own what is still one of the hottest of hot hatches.

Audi has a solid dealer network and presence in Jamaica, but their S-cars are fairly limited - you generally don't see anything larger than the S3 running around.

This isn't terribly surprising when you consider the fact that a new S3 costs around $900 USD per month to own and Jamaica isn't exactly filled with affluent consumers.
