I had my hands gripped so tight for so long, the gloves actually stayed put. #HandTools #FlickrFriday

I recently went to visit my Mum on the east coast to spend a bit of time with her. It was the first visit since my Dad passed away. It was always a Father and Son tradition to go down to the shed to sit and talk about everything and nothing.

The Shed is a place for creativity, escape, reflection and future projects. A place where world domination can be conducted within the confines of a 6m x 8m space.

My dad was born one year after the depression and was a refugee from war torn Europe, those two things shaped his life in a way that still resonates today.

He was a firm believer that life is never to be taken for granted. always seek to improve ones life, never think that any government will look after you and God is with you weather you like it or not.. They are all attributes for survival in a harsh world.

He also believed that everything is useful "never throw anything out" 'it will come in handy one day" . Visiting his shed this time, was a strange feeling, it was like he was there... but he wasn't. just about all of his life possessions were there in the shed, even though he was gone it was comforting to be there. I took my camera and captured his shed as best as I could to preserve all these memories.

A tale from the Tin Temple.

Things to handle with.

Dublin Bus KD339 (GSI339) Modelled here in an All Over Advert for Stanley Tools.

Based at Phibsboro Garage Bombardier 'KD339' wore this livery in 1991 which was designed by a UK Consultancy firm & also Won Best Over All Advert in that year. Modelled on Route 19A - Mc Kee Road.

KD339 also did a a Stint in Ringsend Garage while Sporting this livery.

My third carving project was a steep learning curve. I found a pattern on the internet and thought I would give it a go. It wasn’t long into it that I realised I needed more tools, really small ones. I bought some micro carving chisels including one with a 1.5mm cutting edge. This carving took a month including inception, which involved glueing two pieces of lime wood to get the shape I needed.

Racks of hand tools hang in the East Broad Top shop, many of them stamped with either EBTRR or simply "Rockhill" on the handles. With a blacksmith shop next door I have to imagine most of these tools were made by the railroad themselves.

My Keeton Kutter which I have had for almost half a century. It has two blades, one for vertical cuts in matboard and one for bevelled cuts in the window.

A second wood carving class focused on undercutting. This is meant to make the carving 'pop' from the background.

Relief carving in Jelutong wood, In the Court of the Crimson King album cover by King Crimson. Released in 1969, the cover art was by English artist Barry Godber. Sadly he died a year after its release. He was just 24 years old.

I wanted to post this yesterday, but Photoshop wouldn't work for me!!

I used Jessica Drossin's fabulous textures again - I used Handtool and Powder here. Love these textures!

A tape measure is a useful tool for DIY projects

A Lie-Nielsen smoothing plane. Love this one!

All this and actually a few other bits not included because they weren't photogenic came out of my little machinist's tool chest.

Some old tools I found at the farm. Either belonged to my Father or Grandfather. The square looks rather old. Please try viewing in Lightbox.

CAMPBELL HAUSFELD

Campbell Hausfeld is a manufacturer of air compressors and related products, based in Harrison, Ohio. It is a major subsidiary of the Scott Fetzer Company (also known as Scott & Fetzer) which in turn is part of Berkshire Hathaway. It is one of the oldest Ohio companies.

The company was founded in 1836 and manufactured farm equipment. In 1940 it acquired Joseph Hausfeld's company which was the manufacturer of an air-compressor called Pressure King and was renamed Campbell-Hausfeld. In 1971 Campbell Hausfeld was acquired by Scott Fetzer. Presently the company generates approximately one-third of the profits of the parent company and is running six product lines. The company also manufactures air tools, painting systems, winches, generators, pressure washers and spray guns.

A teaser for a project I'm working on: a multiband LW/MW/SW crystal set receiver. This is the front panel, made from a sheet of black translucent acrylic that still has its original factory protective backing. The large hole is for a panel meter that measures signal strength.
