"They call me The Wild Rose

But my name was Elisa Day

Why they call me it I do not know

For my name was Elisa Day

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one

As she stared in my eyes and smiled

For her lips were the colour of the roses

They grew down the river, all bloody and wild

On the second day I brought her a flower

She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen

I said, 'Do you know where the wild roses grow

So sweet and scarlet and free?'

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow

And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief

As I kissed her goodbye, I said, 'All beauty must die'

And leaned down and planted a rose between her teeth"

Kylie Minogue & Nick Cave ~ 1996

Deceptively simple, this piece was a jigsaw of herculean proportions to assemble.

Step 1 - the handpainted rose (from my friend, Nora Karen) was embellished with teeny Antique French Metal Seed Beads. Now although the seed beads have large holes, it was a tricky job as the rose is painted on denim and I have only regular needles.

Step 2 - trimming the circumference of the rose with very very old French Edwardian cotton netting from 1905. This was so fragile that it to be firstly backed with tulle before being used.

Step 3 - adding the 19th Century Victorian Jet Beaded Tassel which literally fell apart midway through being sewed. Argghhh!!! I unpicked all the stiches. Collected all the jet beads and restrung the tassel, adding super glue for added insurance. Stitched it back on again, alongside the Sapphire Focal (which measures 23mm).

Step 4 - an initial backing is laid over Steps (1), (2) and (3) to both pad and protect. I used some vintage red velvet salvaged from a 1930s Alecon Lace Bodice.

Step 5 - where the real pain begins. Vintage wool ruffles were added, one coloured strip at a time, with just needle and by hand, through what is (at this stage) several layers of fabric including denim and velvet. And ensuring that the stitches go through the rose so everything's tacked nicely without any seams showing or paint cracking. I bent a needle. For real.

Step 6 - I laid a second and final backing of Green Suede on the back, over the unruly unco-operative woolen ruffles, affixed the pinback and thanked God this was done.

My husband was out on a stag party yesterday day and evening, I was bored so knocked this up. I am actually really pleased with it as I feel I have never been able to draw or paint (it usually looks like scribbles!). I think I pulled it off! www.auroracakes.com

I had a bride come and ask for a copy of one of my earlier designs but silver instead of the red. It was good to know that I could replecate the painted design.

This is my first ever handpainted origami paper! :) I used acrylic paints on some grey elephant hide, it works so well that you don't even get paint on your fingers whilst folding!

I will definitely make more use of these paints, I have this blue and also gold, silver and bronze.

Soon to be folded into a rhombus tessellation :)
