50w halogen lamps replaced with 4w LED cool white lamps - and they're just as bright if not brighter! Five lights x 50w = 250w now a total of 20w!
Halogen light to boost the temperature, also means i could see the Koji when stirring at 03:40 in the morning. Heating pad at the bottom which is attached to the thermostat to keep the temperature at approx 35.5C. Tape across the box is for the shelf.
Getting these little halogen lights out is an absolute sod if they blow. I've usually resorted to removing the entire light fitting from the ceiling to get enough leverage to unscrew the unbelievably-grippy ceramic base and brass pins. But no longer. Simply squeeze into the wife's washing-up marigolds, wipe *very* dry on a tea towel, and your thumbs will have enough grip to turn the bulb out of its mounting. NB this only works for bayonet type - not the simpler two-metal-sticks version.
I sent Jamie some flowers the other day because I was feeling down. Doing something nice for others is one way I make myself feel better.
She brought them home and they are lovely. The fragrance is caressing me as I type.

Tested limits with iso100, crop.
Halogen are the winners in terms of brightness. The LEDs use a fraction the amount of electricity, and should last much longer.

So I made a pinhole "lens" for my dSLR. I don't know why, but tonight I decided to do something with it. Except it's the middle of the night, what can you do?
Find something bright enough to make an image! The obvious choice is the halogen lamp on my desk.

This is the same spider from the last image, taken on the same night. I wasn't sure if my exercise in "ambiguity and delay" was going that well, so I decided to try a more traditional approach in case my experiment didn't pan out.
Both were taken at night, with the only light coming from a street light across the way. For this one, I actually grabbed a halogen work light from the garage and lit him up :)
The best part is that this guy is still out there, in the same spot, almost three weeks later! I've actually discovered the particular leaf that he hides behind during the day, and I've been checking on him periodically. It's supposed to rain a lot this weekend, though, so I'm curious to see if that does him in.
If he's still around, I may tear his web down and try and get a timelapse of him creating a new one. We'll see...
