Halloween Time has officially returned to Disneyland, and I'm so excited. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and last year I was unable to shoot many of the decorations (due to lens constraints). This year, my 24-70 and I are ready to put some serious shooting on the schedule, so please enjoy this photo of Jack Skellington's decorating!
Thanks for your views, comments, and favorites!
I've got the list all ready so it gives you some time to work on the themes.
I thought it would be fun instead of the usual Halloween themes to mix it up a bit but a lot of these themes have a Halloween feel so I hope you will put your fun spin on them.
Just in case your unfamiliar with the term Idiom it's a group of words which means something different from it's literal meaning BUT I thought it would be really fun to take these Idioms and make them Literal just like the example I pictured above - Doesn't hold water - which really means not true or unreasonable - I hope the example helps and I hope you have lots of fun doing these!
The group will be set up in a few more days but I wanted to give you time to get your creativity ready :D
Sally enjoying this special day at the fountain in Halloween town. Hope you all have a safe and fun Halloween!!! Till Next year (Maybe????)
Day 31 Happy Halloween
One of my favorite Halloween Time sights at Disneyland is the Dia De Los Muertos section in Zocalo Park. The area is strewn with lights, banners, ofrendas, and of course, calaveras and this nine foot tall catrina.
As I exited the narrow alley that left the Fall Festival at Big Thunder Ranch at Disneyland, I stopped for a moment to tie my shoe. I placed my camera to the left of me, my bags to the right, knelt down and began the slow tedious act of tieing my shoe.
Up and over, round and round .... wait a minute, thats not right. Over and under, up and down ... that can't be it either. A tap on my shoulder broke my concetration as my other half told me to hurry, I was blocking the way and people couldn't get through.
With added pressure, I tried again. Make bunny ears, twist and turn ... my laces fell to the side of my shoe like over cooked spagghetti. Another tap on my shoulder interupted me as I was told once again to hurry, people where building up behind us and were now wall to wall.
Sweat hung from my brow as I leaned over once again. Loop, flip, flop, pull. I could hear wood cracking as the fence began to feel the weight of people pressed against it. Turn, circle, wiggle, snap. Moaning of people as they began to pile up higher and higher behind me. Yank, push, curl, circle. More cracking of wood as the fence hit its limit. Loop, circle, under, pull.
I did it!!! As I stood to get out of the way, there was a big snap, followed by a crackle, then a huge pop as people and Fall Decorations from the festival area flew in every direction!
And that is how Disneyland got its Fall Colors
This lovely arrangement fell right in front of me. Along with a shoe. Not mine.
View on black or I'll tie my shoe in front of you. Not in hurry are you?

Gabi just couldn't keep her head on her shoulders so her head floated away with all the other fluffy white clouds :D
Idiom: Head in the clouds - To have plans or ideas that are not realistic
Recently, in the "spirit" of HalloweenTime, I had the opportunity to read an interesting book entitled, "The Park after Dark - An Unauthorized Guide to the Happiest (Haunted) Place on Earth" by Richard Carradine. This little book is a narrative of the supposedly "haunted" locations throughout Disneyland and recounts some of the unfortunate deaths that have occurred there over the years. I won't get into details here, and do not want to get into believing in ghosts, etc., but this little book is a fascinating read that offers a glimpse into some unusual design elements of Disneyland and some of Walt Disney's supposedly unusual eccentrics that I found fascinating, such as how the number 13 is so prevalent and repetitive and everywhere in the park. The address of Disneyland is 1313 Harbor Blvd., there are 13 of this and that etc....There are suppositions and evidence presented in this book that will make you wonder about things in Disneyland and why they are the way they are...
For example, Main Street is a re-creation of Turn of the Century America, a time when spiritualism and fascination with seances and macabre things was very popular. Many, many well known figures and celebrities of the day were known to be utterly fascinated with the afterlife, including Harry Houdini, who is prominently featured with a collection of his personal effects in the window of the Magic Store on Main Street. The Penny Arcade seems to be the subject of some unusual design characteristics that are subtle and not easily noticed. Mr Carradine recounts how Pennies and copper were considered to be a conductor of "spirit energy" and accounts how ouija boards are used to communicate with spirits. The Penny Arcade features a very prominent Penny right in the middle of the facade, while to the left and right, on the two neighboring facades, one will find prominent displays of a sunburst on the left upperworks, and a full moon on the right facade. On Ouija boards these symbols are used to represent light and darkness, and more specifically, "Yes and "no". It is said that if you toss a penny in the air and ask a question, the question will be answered depending on which side of the facade it comes to rest on...
Also, the Penny arcade features a fortune telling machine featuring Esmerelda the Fortune Teller. She is right out front on the sidewalk. Esmerelda gives fortunes, sometimes these fortunes are not always happy ones, an unusual thing for Disneyland, "The Happiest Place on Earth" . Mr. Carradine recounts how Walt Disney was once given a "reading" by a fortune teller, and was told that he would die before his 36th birthday. Obviously that did not come to pass, but it apparently had a lasting effect on Walt Disney for the rest of his life....
Regardless of your beliefs, "The Park After Dark" is a fun little book to read, and perfect for your HalloweenTime celebrations at Disney Parks.
Happy HalloweenTime!
Look who came with me today to Disney :D a little Haunted Mansion Ghost Host and she met Jack at Carthay for a Halloween style cocktail!
More shots from Disneyland's Halloween Party for #fireworksfriday. Such a fun party! I debated "fixing" the burnt out light on the side of the castle to preserve the symmetry, but ended up leaving it as shot. What do you think? Fix or Not??
Hope you have a great weekend! Thanks for looking!!
I know, it's October now....
However, I still have a few shots from over the Summer that never made it into my queue...
This shot of Partners was taken on the last day of August as my kids returned to school and just before the Halloweentime makeover at Disneyland
Partners in the Hub at Disneyland is one of those subjects that I absolutely cannot resist snapping a shot of each and every time I am at the Park because of the constant change in the flower bed, the changing decorations with the seasons, and of course the legendary subject...and yet, I am never completely happy with what I come away with.
For some reason, like trying to photograph a ghost, there is just something elusive about capturing the entire scene the way I want it to look. The Hub at Disneyland is very compact compared to other Disney Parks, which makes it difficult to just get a camera through the usual crowds, not to mention getting a shot without guests in the frame. The statue at night is harshly lit, oddly colored, and is surrounded by brightly lit background elements that fight for attention. The Sky is frequently just yucky and always unusually colored from ambient lights even in clear weather. To say the least, it is is a challenge. A challenge that I try to make right time and time again...
HDR image from 3 exposures
I used the latest version of Photomaix for the merge using both Fusion and Enhancer modes blended as necessary, and the latest version of Nik Color Efex (4.0 Complete) , a very good set of tools, with even more additions and tweeks in this version.
I also use Lightroom v 3.5 and Imagenomic Noiseware Pro
Best when Viewed Larger On Black.
For the second year in a row, I was able to hang out with Mike and Diane at the Disneyland Halloween party last Friday, which is now a ticketed event each year. One of the cool effects that you will only find during Halloweentime is the fog which appears over the Rivers of America along with unique lighting out on the water and Tom Sawyer's Island. One of the other highlights would certainly be the performance of the "Cadaver Dans" who entertained the trick or treaters with Barbershop tunes as they stood in loooooooong lines for candy. I was hoping for a long exposure shot of blue hour but I was afraid of losing the last bit of light in the time it would take to set up my tripod, which turned out to be BROKEN as I went to set it up. :( So this was composed from a 5 shot handheld bracket with the Nikkor 14-24 instead. Yet another shot that I might have to try next year.
So that is just some of the highlights from Rogers - I wish I could go in without people and get pictures cause a lot of it was so hard

I love this time of year at Disneyland. The only time I like more is Christmas Time at the park. I love what they did with the Big Thunder Ranch area, so rich in colors and decor.

During HalloweenTime at Disneyland, Space Mountain undergoes a spooky transformation to become Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy...Featuring state of the art projected images mapped precisely to the exterior, every few minutes the ghost inside tries its best to break out of the Mountain in several different amazing scenes. This particular scene shows a giant hand trying to push its way out from the inside accompanied by loud screeching metal sounds and eerie moaning and screams that can be heard all the way from the Hub...
On this particular evening Ryan Pastorino and I were on the upper loading deck of the queue photographing the Mountain as it went through its transformations. We have decided to post each of our different photos today so that different approaches to the same idea can be compared. For the record, this shot was extremely difficult to finalize in post-processing due to the radically changing lights and a dreary overcast that was horrific in a different way...
My presentation is a HDR image from three exposures, merged in Photomatix using both Enhancer and Fusion, combined in PP with elements of two other additional exposures masked in. Many adjustments were made in Photoshop using various tools including Nik Color Efex 4, and Topaz Adjust.
Check out Ryan's photo here:
With the Main Gates cast open, Disneyland expels its final guests for the evening as HalloweenTime winds down. Decorators and Castmembers will prepare for the Holiday season and the magical transformation to take place over the next two weeks in the Park as seemingly overnight, the giant Mickey Mouse Pumpkin will give way to the Giant Tree on Main Street, and these Fab 5 Fall gate guardians will be replaced by their Winter brethren...
As I was attempting to photograph the lovely twisty tie that was holding up the lovely twisty branches on the lovely twisty fence, this horrible twisted pumpkin kept jumping up in to my shot yelling boogie boogie boogah! So I pulled out my lovely sledge hammer I always carry with me in case of emergency and made minced meat pie out of him.
View on black. I have a sledge hammer.
