(Also see last pic.) A few more bricks removed... This close-up view shows where the plate core inside the handle merges with the plates inside the comb. When designing, I had to leave off a pair of 2x2 brackets, to allow the core to emerge. This is what causes a tiny rectangular gap on the final object. But I think it's worth it for the extra strength.
I was really struggling with the Macro Monday theme "Ethereal".
Dreamy, soft focus, elf-like pictures are just not me, although I expect to see some here that I really like.
If ethereal beauty means extremely delicate and refined, I think of the jewelry of René Lalique.
This hairpin (1902-03) is made of horn, gold and diamonds and is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Although the object is not large, the foto is a close-up, not a macro. Trying to get any closer attracted the attention of two security guards. LOL, not true, the object is behind glass.

Gion Corner was established at Yasaka Kaikan Hall in 1962. Its one-hour show is popular with international tourists for its quick introduction to seven different traditional art forms: chadō (the Japanese tea ceremony), kado (flower arrangement), koto (Japanese Harp) music, gagaku (ancient court music), kyogen (traditionally comic drama), kyomai (Kyoto style geisha/maiko dance) geisha-style women dances, and bunraku puppet drama. On the first floor, there is a Maiko Gallery exhibiting interesting items associated with maiko.

Assignment: Do a series of [drawings] that show the movement of time.
Documentation of my hair loss in a week.
wood, plywood, hair, glue. 2011.
A beaded haircomb I made. This was actually a mock-up that I ended wearing because I ran out of time to make a better one with real freshwater pearls. Photo taken by Yi Chen
Totally, utterly and implicitly inspired by Sayuri (Kyoto's most famous geisha), the lead character in Arthur Golden's Memoirs Of A Geisha.
I'll be the first to say that this particular palette was exceedingly difficult for me to work with. I who love technicolour. Who appreciates all things effervescent and somewhat flamboyant. But I'm also the last person to turn down a challenge :)
Loosely based on what I feel Sayuri would wear as a haircomb, I sketched this design over a year ago, on 18th March 2008 to be precise (did I hear gasps of "and it took her this long to make it?"), and finally got around to actualising the necklace you now see before you.

Hooray for dark purple! Color variation is quite evident here. I almost edited it out in Photoshop, but.. this is the reality. A small gap near the handle could have been avoided (see other pics), but was allowed in favor of strength. I wanted this model to be tough enough for my "real-life Friends" to play with. So, a hidden stack of plates runs from the first round tine, through the entire length of the handle. Now it can be happily swung around at BrickFair!
