Males usually gather food for the nest, while females feed the nestlings. The young birds start by eating bits of larvae, then grasshoppers, moths, and spiders. They sometimes eat small vertebrates such as salamanders.

This Hermit Thrush posed nicely for me with some fall Maples in the background. I would have preferred a more natural perch to the rusty old chain link fence but maybe next time. Hennepin County, MN 09/29/20

Hermit thrush is a winter visitor to our neighborhood. This one has been coming in to enjoy the bird bath on a regular basis this winter. Here it seems to be engaging in a kind of dance along the fence. Quite fancy moves.

Such sweet little birds! I've seen a lot of recent posts of these cuties, must be migration time for them. Safe travels!

Hermit Thrush

Catharus guttatus

Taken in Santa Rosa, CA, USA. Not used to seeing these in my neighborhood, but this bird seemed to want to hang out with me for a while.

Thank you for your views, faves and comments. Deeply appreciated.

I saw this Hermit Thrush kicking up leaves and foraging deep in the woods at about 5pm today. There was still enough light to provide backlighting to the surrounding foliage and when it hopped onto an old stump the setting was just right for a portrait shot.

Hermit crabs from Dry Tortugas National Park. These were one of my kids favorite things when we visited. Be careful though, they can really pinch!

Wikipedia: The hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus) is a medium-sized North American thrush. Hermit thrushes breed in coniferous or mixed woods across Canada, southern Alaska, and the northeastern and western United States. They make a cup nest on the ground or relatively low in a tree.

While most hermit thrushes migrate to wintering grounds in the southern United States and south to Central America, some remain in northern coastal US states and southern Ontario.

Conservation status: Least Concern

A peak into this hermit warbler's winter migration was an unexpected treat. This is the first I've seen of one in the coastal lowlands and not higher up near the crest where they are normally seen in the summer breeding months.
