This Hermit Crab is an incredibly tiny creature, barely larger than a thumb nail. With its intricately patterned shell, this miniature crab scampers along beaches and coral reefs, seeking shelter and food. Its petite size adds a touch of charm to its already mysterious allure, reminding us of the fascinating wonders that exist in our world, no matter how small.

Scanning while blending in. The hermit thrush is excellent at that - very small, hardly ever sits still and hops deep into bushes for safety. Capturing one is often frustrating, but I got lucky.

It is seasonal in California. It is migratory and thus only here during winter time. ✔️ ✔︎

I was at the Botanic Garden with my wife, who was doing an extended bird survey of the Garden with three of her fellow docents. We saw two Hermit Thrushes during the survey, including this one on a branch by the pond.

This hermit thrush is another local celebrity at Commonwealth Lake. It came out to give us a show before it went back to its hiding place.

Phaethornis eurynome - Only large hermit hummingbird in its range with black feathers on the throat giving it a scaled appearance. The bill is slightly curved. The back is olive-green and it has a strong mask. The tail is long and white-tipped. Similar to Dusky-throated Hermit, but Scale-throated Hermit is bigger with a longer tail. Found in the understory of humid and montane forests.

Happy Tuesday!

Always enjoy finding and photographing these Hermit Thrush on their way south. Their pause really gives one an ability to get a nice and detailed shot!
