The absolute depths of Winter in Iceland.

This normally pounding was waterfall at Kirkjufell now reduced to a mere 'shower' encased within what appears to be a naturally formed Ice Cave or Grotto, there were actually 2 of these that has formed around the 2 main spouts of the falls, (the bigger panoramic image can been further back in my stream here - www.flickr.com/photos/pete37038/49487921378/in/dateposted/ ). This is from a different perpective and just concentrating on the detail in one of the 'archways'

Whilst some people would no doubt see this archway as a dream 'selfie location' for Instagram, this was as close as it was safe to go, and it was shot at 190mm from a safe position on the banking, there was literally no way of telling how thick the ice was underneath the snowfall, and I had absolutely no intention of findiing out !

It's well worth the +- 800m walk from car park and steps down to explore this one.

All I wanted to do was drive to The Dalles and take some pictures of wildflowers in front of mountains. Nice calm morning scenes which don't require much effort. Unfortunately my friends Steve Dondero and Steve Schwindt (both excellent photographers and hikers) had other plans. So in a span of 3 days we climbed the equivalent of 500 floors, got off trail more times than on trail, and made it to some of the most picturesque waterfalls in Columbia river gorge. Here is one of my favorites, Mossy Grotto. Getting to the destination involved some serious hiking, grunting, butt sliding, rock jumping, falling, wading, scree scrambling, adrenaline pumping action. Hope you like the result :)

Shoot these falls in late evening and have them all to yourself

for the third "side" of Grotto I really like the B&W version.

This is pretty much the opposite of yesterday's post color wise. Grotto Geyser steaming and bubbling away. It was fortunate see this erupting as this geyser can't be predicted by the park service. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, July 2017

Onwards and upwards, This is my friend Jan and her first time walking on ice like this , its an uphill grade so spikes are a must I use micro spikes they are the best and make it as easy as walking on pavement , dont use the cheaper ones with little round spikes or springs they are no good on this surface and I saw way to many people today with no spikes sliding down the ice, very easy to get hurt, many turned round at this point and missed the best bit of the trail

The Grotto Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin. It is near the Riverside Geyser.

When it erupts it looks like a washing machine to me. It has many tunnels within it and the water seems to be going in many different directions.

This geyser is located in the upper geyser basin. When erupts it looks like what imagine would the inside of dishwasher on a much larger scale.

It pretty long hike to it, but it is close to the Riverside Geyser which awesome geyser.

Last time I was there I spent one whole day watching geysers erupt, and I 13 eruptions. Wish I had brought a bike.

A lovely blue sky day for a walk in the mountains.

This grotto is on the grounds of Mission Concepción, just south of San Antonio, Texas. The mission was first established in 1711 in east Texas and in 1731 moved to San Antonio by Franciscan friars from Spain. Source: Wikipedia.

A Marian grotto on the grounds of The St. Agatha's Community. Once this community included an orphanage and youth services. These closed in the 2000's and that section has largely become athletic fields for the local school district. The section where this grotto stands is now adult and elder care.

Little manly cove former gasworks

I've seen this gorgeous landmark many times over the years, but only recently hiked up the hillside to learn more about it. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes was the dream of one man, and its present incarnation (the third on this spot in 125 years) is a credit to the hard work & dedication of many people. If interested, the story of this lovely building can be found at: www.heritagepark-mission.ca/grotto.html

Location --THE GROTTO

Stourhead Lake

The most beautiful place ,for photographers !

Grottos were popular in Italian Renaissance gardens as places of retreat from summer heat. In the summer of 1762 Henry Hoare recorded his enjoyment, cooling off here. Stourhead’s Grotto is a circular, domed chamber built to resemble a cave.

Henry Hoare II’s ambition was to make Stourhead an unsurpassable place. This saw the installation of spectacular garden features, from a medieval cross and classical temples to a cosy cottage and modern ice house.

Another View of one of the giant Buddah carvings a the Longmen Grottoes. You can get a better sense of its size from the image linked below in the comments section.

The Longmen Grottoes (aka Longmen Caves) is a UNESCO–listed world heritage site which has thousands of statues of Buddha carved in caves excavated from its surrounding cliffs. Unfortunately, the site was subjected to significant vandalism and senseless destruction at several points in its history. Major artifacts were removed by Western collectors and souvenir hunters during the early 20th century and by the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The heads of many statues were also destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

The Chinese government has since recognized the cultural and tourist importance of the Longmen Grottoes and has been active engaged in the preservation and restoration of the site. For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longmen_Grottoes

Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. Man-made caves were fashionable already in antiquity. In the 16th century, the grotto became a regular feature in the garden design of the gentry. Waddesdon Manor (and this grotto) was built in the 1870s. In this age of industry and international capital, the grotto had long ago gone out of fashion. But this object is not about usefulness. It is about a dream. What dream? Fuji X-E2 plus Helios 44M-7 at approx. F5.6.

This cave or grotto can be found at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. I wasn't allowed to use a tripod but I did it anyway. Good thing I was there on an early December morning! Only a few people around.

The grotto called "Feengrotte" in Saalfeld, Germany

The Lovers' Grotto in Helenów Park, Łódź, Poland...

Grotto was built in the 19th century, in 1882 by the gardening company Ludwig Spaeth from Berlin. Pieces of various shapes hang from the ceiling, they remind of stalactites. The grotto is made of volcanic tuffs that were brought from Mount Vesuvius.

"Road Tripping" yesterday with some friends exploring Iowa! :)

The Grotto of the Redemption was built primarily by Father Paul Dobberstein over 42 years. He labored summer and winter setting rocks and gems into concrete.
