I was very geeked to see this little gal perched above the pond at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse near McAllen, TX. Cute little birds, and absolutely huge beaks relative to their short tails - very front-heavy!

This subspecies is considered a variant or western form of Common Pondhawk . Though many people consider it a valid species, there is evidence that suggests it intergrades with the eastern form. It is common in the extreme parts of the western Texas panhandle where it does occur with Eastern Pondhawk. Nothing has been written on what mechanisms may serve to identify these nearly identical species to each other where they occur together. Western Pondhawk is often seen perching on the ground similar to clubtails, for which they may be mistaken due to their green color. They are capable and fierce predators in the air, taking small to large prey at will.

FIELD MARK-The Green Peafowl, is a large galliform bird that is found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is also known as the Java Peafowl, but this term is properly used to describe the nominate subspecies endemic to the island of Java. It is the closest relative of the Indian Peafowl or Blue Peafowl Pavo cristatus, which is mostly found on the Indian subcontinent.
Got a cold last week... "Green" is my wish to be 10 years younger (if green ever means "yound and fresh"), then I wouldn't have felt so blue when I was sick :D

The massive Green Bank telescope, the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope, is dwarfed by the surrounding mountains.
The rocks were polished clean by the shore ice that left about a month ago. It didn't take long for the algae to return.
Maleficent needed something... like green flames. She had green flames in the movie so why not here as well?
I believe this tentacle belongs to the hydra known as Hydra viridissima or the green Hydra. The green colour is from the green algae Chlorella which live symbiotically in the gastrodermis, or inner layer of cells.
The body of the hydra is topologically a hollow spheroid, i.e., it is like a glove blown up with air. The cells walls of the body and tentacles are really only 2 cells thick. The inner cells, i.e., the green ones here, make up the gastrodermis which is responsible for digestion. The ectodermis is the lighter colored structure on the outside. There is a structureless lamellar layer in-between. This layer is evident in this micrograph.
The ectoderm's is covered with the nematocysts which fire a tethered harpoon into the prey. Roughly at the center top and bottom of this micrograph are two nematocists and the associated cavity for the "harpoon". The spines on the tentacle are sensors which trigger the nematocists. In-between the namatocists are the epitheliomuscular cells which are responsible for the muscular action. Finally there are smaller interstitial cells which are a form of stem cell. This green basilisk is one of my favorite lizards. They are also called double crested basilisk, or Jesus Christ lizard.

In honor of my Irish heritage, I will be wearing green in some form every day this week. Also listening to all my Van Morrison CDs. Today, starting slow with army green and some orange for good measure. I know the top is vintage because "Basic Editions" was a Target brand before Target went all designer.

The Green Hairstreak holds its wings closed, except in flight, showing only the green underside with its faint white streak. The extent of this white marking is very variable; it is frequently reduced to a few white dots and may be almost absent. Males and females look similar and are most readily told apart by their behaviour: rival males may be seen in a spiralling flight close to shrubs, while the less conspicuous females are more often encountered while laying eggs.
