By designing pressed metal joints for building bamboo frameworks to try to reduce poverty and bad living conditions, Central St. Martins’ graduate Sang Min Yu created Relieving Poverty through Design. A project designed for giving South East Asia’s rural communities a chance to work with local materials and produce furniture themselves. This project allows them to be self-sufficient, engaged and be responsible for their local living areas.

Another surprising but earthier object within the show was Seungjae Oh’s Beehive for Gardeners. Created from a mix of recycled newspaper and bees’ wax -- used as a hardener and eco-binder -- this non-toxic, safe and waterproof home for the little buzzers can be hung from any tall tree branch.
Adjacent to the Milton, Ontario Walmart store, the 20-killowatt wind turbine is expected to generate as much as 50,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, enough to power four average size Canadian households. The wind turbine has been designed for low wind speed areas, where wind power has not been previously practical, and can operate in wind speeds as low as 10 kilometres per hour.
Power generated will be returned to the electrical grid under Ontario's feed-in tariff program for renewable energy. The company will use these pilot projects to assess the effectiveness and potential benefits of these systems to potentially power some of its stores in the future.

Looking down over the funicular line going up and down from the entrance of the Centre for Alternative Technology (in the southern part of Meirionydd, Gwynedd, northwestern Wales, near Machynlleth, which is in Powys, Mid Wales), to its main, upper level and back, on a mostly sunny morning in early May.
According to the Centre's Website (consulted 1 March 2014), "CAT is an education and visitor centre demonstrating practical solutions for sustainability. We cover all aspects of green living: environmental building, eco-sanitation, woodland management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and organic growing." It was founded on the site of a former slate quarry in 1973 and has since expanded considerably from its original size and scope. (My husband and I first visited it in 1989, then saw the extent of its growth when we returned in 2012.) The water-powered funicular is just one example of its reliance on the the types of alternative energy and modes of living that it demonstrates.

CHINA SHANGHAI HONGQIAO 19MAY10 - Installation of solar photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the Hongqiao Passenger Rail Terminal in Shanghai, China. There are a total of 23000 solar panels planned for the CECIC-funded project, each panel with a production capacity of 280 KWh to feed into the electricity grid.
