View from the funicular leading up to the main level of the Centre for Alternative Technology (in the southern part of Meirionydd, Gwynedd, northwestern Wales, near Machynlleth, which is in Powys, Mid Wales), on a mostly sunny morning in early May.

 

This view is towards the northwest, with mountains of southern Snowdonia, in Snowdonia National Park (in Welsh, Parc Cenedlaethol Erythri), which has a boundary just across the road (the A487) from the Centre. The higher peak in the background may be part of Cadair Idris(?), one of the highest mountains in the southern part of the Park.

 

According to the Centre's Website (consulted 1 March 2014), "CAT is an education and visitor centre demonstrating practical solutions for sustainability. We cover all aspects of green living: environmental building, eco-sanitation, woodland management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and organic growing." It was founded on the site of a former slate quarry in 1973 and has since expanded considerably from its original size and scope. (My husband and I first visited it in 1989, then saw the extent of its growth when we returned in 2012.) The water-powered funicular is just one example of its reliance on the the types of alternative energy and modes of living that it demonstrates.

Every movie streamed, every online purchase, every GPS route, every medical scan, every bank transaction, every weather forecast, every cybersecurity system, every scientific model, every cloud-based business tool – all of it flows through data centers. Not abstractly. Not theoretically. Literally. And as the world becomes more connected, more digital, and more dependent on real-time information, the demand for computing power grows – whether or not AI exists.

 

Instead of forcing data centers into suburbs and farmland, we should build them where they can thrive without conflict – remote, renewable rich, water neutral outposts that generate their own power and recycle every drop. Otherwise, we just infuriate local residents unnecessarily. There are plenty of wide-open spaces in the American West for solar-wind-hydro-powered complexes that can blend into the landscape and leave local communities untouched.

I imagine a “water-neutral” data center complex will mark the beginning of the American Digital Frontier in the near future. It will be step 1 in a new kind of city that is totally self-sufficient, generating all its own power needs via solar panels, a wind farm, and perhaps even a nearby waterfall for hydroelectric energy production. It will be situated in a remote, some would even call "wild" part of a big Western state, nowhere near civilization, with snow-capped mountains in the background.

 

One of the best sites is Monitor Valley, near the Toquima Range in Central Nevada. It is one of the least populated valleys in the continental U.S. The Toquima Range and Table Mountain Wilderness rise dramatically to the west, and the valley is among the highest irradiance zones in North America. Afternoon thermals sweep down from the mountains, and snowmelt streams descend from the high peaks in spring. Long-haul fiber routes cross central Nevada along US-50 and US-6.

 

Beneath the quiet watch of snow-capped peaks, a new frontier will take shape designed to harmonize advanced computing with the wild American landscape. It will draw power from the sun, wind, and mountain streams while returning every drop of water back to its natural environment.

 

The outpost will generate all of its own energy through a carefully balanced ecosystem of solar arrays, wind turbines, and micro hydro installations. Its cooling systems will rely on closed loop water cycles, immersion technology, and atmospheric capture — ensuring zero impact on local watersheds. Every structure will be low profile, earth toned, and shaped to follow the contours of the valley, blending modern engineering with the timeless quiet of the high desert.

 

A small residential and operations cluster will support the engineers, technicians, and researchers who call the outpost home. Their work will be the foundation of a new kind of settlement — one that grows outward from a single, elegant node into a full fledged city powered entirely by renewable energy and next generation computing.

 

This outpost will be more than a technological installation. It will be the seed of a future city — a place where innovation, sustainability, and wilderness coexist. A place that demonstrates how the infrastructure of tomorrow can be built with reverence for the land and responsibility to the generations ahead. The Monitor Valley Outpost can stand as a bold invitation: to imagine, to build, and to believe in a future where technology enhances the world instead of consuming it. This is where the digital frontier can begin — and where the next chapter of American innovation will be written.

 

Addendum

 

Other suitable outposts may be Northern Arizona (Kaibab Plateau and the Arizona Strip), Eastern Oregon (High Lava Plains near the Cascades), Western Utah (House Range and Snake Valley), Southwestern Wyoming (Red Desert meets the Wind River Range).

 

This isn't pie-in-the-sky. A public-private partnership may be necessary to get at least the first outpost built, which seems to me as important as building a base on the moon.

The CAFE Green Flight Challenge sponsored by Google will be held at the CAFE Foundation Flight Test Center at Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, Calif. The awards ceremony and exposition of the competing aircraft will be held Oct. 3, 2011 at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif.

 

The Expo will consist of static displays of the aircraft that participated in the challenge; exhibits of

green transportation technology companies, aircraft companies, other green companies and NASA displays; fly-bys of participating aircraft; and an awards ceremony to recognize the winners of the challenge.

 

The Green Flight Challenge sponsored by Google (GFC) was announced at AirVenture 2009 in Oshkosh, Wis., on July 31, 2009. The flight competition focuses on efficiency. The aircraft need to meet stringent safety and noise requirements as well as reasonable speed and range. The driving requirement will be to exceed an equivalent fuel-efficiency of 200 passenger miles per gallon. The GFC marks the first time in history that full-scale electric-powered aircraft will fly in competition. To compute the equivalence, the energy content of the electricity or fuel will be compared to one gallon of gasoline.

Cost-effective pasture management practices in Kyrgyzstan are helping to reduce negative impacts of livestock grazing on land and improve rural livelihoods.

 

The project is also working on attracting farmers to distant pastures by installing green technologies, including six mini hydropower stations and 18 solar energy stations. This equipment helps to improve the livelihoods of families and shepherds working in distant pastures.

The base of the funicular leading up to the main level of the Centre for Alternative Technology (in the southern part of Meirionydd, Gwynedd, northwestern Wales, near Machynlleth, which is in Powys, Mid Wales), on a mostly sunny morning in early May.

 

On the table, a publication appropriate to the centre's theme and a container filled with daffodils appropriate to its Welsh location.

 

According to its website (consulted 1 March 2014), "CAT -- whose Welsh name is Canolfan y Dechnoleg Amgen -- is an education and visitor centre demonstrating practical solutions for sustainability. We cover all aspects of green living: environmental building, eco-sanitation, woodland management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and organic growing." It was founded on the site of a former slate quarry in 1973 and has since expanded considerably from its original size and scope. (My husband and I first visited it in 1989, then saw the extent of its growth when we returned in 2012.) The water-powered funicular is just one example of its reliance on the types of alternative energy and modes of living that it demonstrates.

Cost-effective pasture management practices in Kyrgyzstan are helping to reduce negative impacts of livestock grazing on land and improve rural livelihoods.

 

The project is also working on attracting farmers to distant pastures by installing green technologies, including six mini hydropower stations and 18 solar energy stations. This equipment helps to improve the livelihoods of families and shepherds working in distant pastures.
