NY Design Week 09: ICFF - CNC Madness from Lerival

HangerPak: Transformer Packaging Turns Into Shirt Hanger

The Optimus Prime of Packaging

Packaging is a tough one. You can often reduce the amount used, but you still need something to protect what you're shipping. One solution is to make it out of recycled materials, and to make sure that it is easy to recycle, but that's still not completely satisfactory, which is why Steve Haslip's HangerPak is so cool. Read on for more details...

Squeezing oil out of the tar sands is one of the most water intensive, carbon emitting, and environmentally destructive fossil fuel sources out there. But that hasn't stopped shareholders of Norway's StatoilHydro from giving up on them.

Screening: No Country for Old Men - Berlin

It’s probably best to attend this one with a friend—or you might be turning around to check your back more than once.

This chilling, award-winning drama from P.T. Anderson marked the director’s turn from respected helmer of Magnolia and Boogie Nights to a master of his field. Adapted from the Cormac McCarthy book, the film follows a serial killer (Javier Bardem, in an Oscar-nabbing performance) with a seriously bad haircut and an inexplicable vengeance. Josh Brolin’s excellent performance as the cop-who-took-the-catnip fleshes out the character study the film yields.

The "Topiary" Patio Furniture Collection by Richard Schultz

Furniture FashionWednesday, May 20, 2009 at 5:44 PM

When it comes to patio and outdoor furniture, why not make them part of the surroundings and harmonious with nature. According to designer Richard Schultz "I wanted to design a chair which looked like a shrub pruned to look like a chair". The Topiary Collection does a fine job of adding an organic element to their natural surroundings and features chairs, benches, and tables in muted or vibrant colors. See the rest of the classic and decorative furniture for inside or out back on the patio by Richard Schultz here.

Llot Llov 2009

MoCo LocoWednesday, May 20, 2009 at 5:29 PM

llot_llov_milan_2009.jpg

Despite economic uncertainty, Llot Llov embraces challenge and pronounces, "The glass is full - full to the rim." The 2009 collection embraces this outlook, a series of pieces that incorporate either traditional industrial methods or materials. Lucille is macramé with a new twist, inspired by industrial transport nets. A hoist is attached to these plant cocoons in order that the height may be varied. Hopper is modeled after shopping carts, offering seating atop a rabbit fur. Lester's table legs are inspired by the ceramics of high voltage isolators, comparable to hardened steel. Above Lester hangs Zoé, a lamp of copper-covered sheet metal that acts as a warm cage for four tungsten lights. And Assa, Mata and Fide are vases that have been metal spun, a technique employed in less aesthetic contexts.

Agency Nil Will Work For All It’s Worth

PSFKWednesday, May 20, 2009 at 5:29 PM

An interesting new agency has just launched, that true to the times we live in, hopes to channelize the skills of experienced but laid-off talents from the advertising industry, as well as that of graduate students from advertising programs - people who just can’t seem to lay their hands on that elusive job, even though most of them are probably extremely talented. Their logic is simple: advertising agencies are willing to spend a lot to hire freelance staff but can’t afford to hire people for full-time positions. So Agency Nil will do the work that agencies hire them for, on a contract basis and in the manner of the role of a freelance employee, and in return all they’d like to be paid is what the client (i.e the agency) thinks the work is worth. They have just one caveat: that basic expenses and production costs must be covered - anything above that is at the discretion of the client. ‘Cheaper than freelance, better than interns’ is their tagline.

A brave and innovative way of thinking by Hank Leber, a graduate of VCU Brandcenter. All the very best to him and his team. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.

Musikinstrumenten-Museum - Culture - Berlin

Beethoven and Bach would be proud. In a country where instrument-making has been whittled to an expertise over millenia, a museum dedicated to this art is only due.

Part of the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung, the Musikinstrumenten-Museum embraces the Germany’s glorious history of music with its collection of over 3,000 instruments stemming from the 16th and 21st centuries, making it one of the countries most comprehensive collections.

Sadly, only 800 of these instruments are on display, but they include a spectacular selection including a rare Strativarious violin, Friedrich the Great flutes and a massive Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Organ donated from the Siemens family. The irony: some of these might appear to be more uncommon to the modern-day visitor than the museum’s recent expansion into electronic music, which includes electric guitars, mixing stations and other experimental formats.

RunPee Helps Schedule Bathroom Breaks During Movies

PSFKWednesday, May 20, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Deciding when to skip out to the restroom during a new movie can be tough - you don’t want to miss anything crucial. But website RunPee aims to help you know the exact right time to go. The page has time-lines for popular movies, that list suggested points throughout the film when you can leave without missing an important scene. It also tells you how much time you have to get back, and has a scrambled re-cap, that can be revealed and reviewed when you return.

Although it’s a useful idea, RunPee uses Flash, which would not make it a good fit for mobile phone usage. As a commenter on Buzzfeed suggested - this would make a killer iPhone app.

B@ TV

Cool HuntingWednesday, May 20, 2009 at 5:02 PM

B@ TV is a new platform (still currently in beta) created for virtual and vicarious clubbing. A pioneering web TV community, the channel broadcasts from every major club event in the world with exclusive content from the hottest international DJs—from WMC events to Deadmau5 in London.

Featured DJ Pete Tong says, "b@ gives fans the music we are playing unedited, uninterrupted and with all the interaction between the clubbers and DJ on the night." The website accomplishes this with cameras in the DJ box and on the audience, even offering a "clubber's confessional booth." It's the 360 degree clubbing experience without having to leave your armchair.

Taking clubbing to a new level of interactivity, the site allows members (you have to sign-up) to live chat, share their own content and even broadcast themselves to the community. The service enables communication with like-minded clubbers on a whole new level. Ray Smith, the founder of b@ TV explains that it "is not just clubbing on demand but an interactive community where members can re-live and share their experiences."

IRISH TATLER

HOMEBUG : homes, interiors, art & design - ireland & elsewhereFriday, May 22, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Eagle eyed Irish Tatler readers may have noticed a little mention of Homebug in this month’s issue. It marks the beginning of what will hopefully be a beautiful friendship, as I’ll be contributing my interior design musings to future issues, from next month. I’m truly delighted to be working with such a stylish institution – the magazine has been running since 1890!

Stay tuned to Homebug next week, when I’ll be posting some photos of how my house is looking at the mo. There have been some big changes - we have a lot of catching up to do!

In the meantime, below is some interiors inspiration that's floating my boat... a junk style bedroom via Sandbox Studios, an open shelving dream kitchen via Remodelista, and Bertoia chairs and architectural plants make a small decked patio sing via Living Etc.

Eagle eyed Irish Tatler readers may have noticed a little mention of Homebug in this month’s issue. It marks the beginning of what will hopefully be a beautiful friendship, as I’ll be contributing my interior design musings to future issues, from next month. I’m truly delighted to be working with such… Read more

"COLLECT" BOOKCASE

HOMEBUG : homes, interiors, art & design - ireland & elsewhereFriday, May 22, 2009 at 12:04 PM

“Collect” is a new bookcase designed by Ole Jensen for Normann Copenhagen. It’s zingy colour and oblique, edgy form make it distinctly ‘now’, but this is not just design for design’s sake. As striking as it is in itself, what I love about the “Collect” bookcase is that it’s a thoughtful piece of furniture designed to be a modern display case for nostalgic artifacts.

Designer Ole Jensen explains: "We all have special objects that refresh memories - things that have a meaning and create the pleasure of recognition. It could be anything from a football to a stone found

展覽時間 Date|2015.5.9-6.5

展覽地點 Venue|台北街頭 Taipei street

展覽簡介 Description|

I've been shooting ABANDONED for several years: those left behind, discarded or thrown-away items. My attempt and interpretation are to capture them directly by camera without any modifications or taboos to show their true appearance.

Nowadays people easily throw away or abandon things right after the usage, instinctively ignoring the harm to the environment. Even worse, people are trying to enjoy and take more benefits from Mother Nature. Abandoning something doesn’t mean it vanishes. Therefore, litters and used items are the realistic evidences of human’s consumption based on uncontrolled desires.

Iconic advertisement poster of the "German Railway" DB from 1960

by german graphic designer Hans Schmandt (1920-1993) ...

Essentially inspired by DB commercial director Werner Walz, who was very interested in prehistoric art and cave paintings and asked Schmandt to be "kind of creative" in this direction ...

Hence Schmandt travelled to the Altamira caves in Spain to study the character of such first mankind paintings and created a series of 3 legendary placard motives, whereof the wild and striking "Cattle and class 140 Electric" theme is my personal favorite. Although today it has more the impression of some fancy and poor photomontage efforts ... ; )

With 879 units built from 1957 - 1973 the light freight electric class E 40 / 140 was an omnipresent part of the german "economic miracle" of this now sadly bygone colourful and prosperous era ...

American graphic designer Ethel Reed (1874-1912) rose to fame at the early age of eighteen as an acclaimed poster designer. To everyone's perplex, she disappeared from historical records a few years later. Strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau movement and Japonisme, her artworks usually captured female figures and floral motifs along with the use of negative space and stark contrast between the figure and the background. We have digitally enhanced Reed's notable designs in this collection and they are free to download and use under the CC0 license.

Meet Laura who I saw walking with some groceries as I was driving back from the gym. Her head scarf and her red lipstick was a standout (with thick rimmed glasses) even on a quick glance. Luckily it transpired that Laura stays in the same apartments as I do – so when I saw her again a few minutes later, made my request without any hesitation explaining the project. Laura was very agreeable to the idea and open to the pictures. She did indicate that she really doesn’t think there is anything interesting about her (when asked a little about herself) – well that part I strongly disagree.

We walked a few steps to find some 'open shade' at the entrance of the apartment buildings and did a few pictures trying out different angles and poses. Though the lady has a beautiful warm smile, we tried the 'serious' expression. Laura was extremely patient and relaxed (maybe the long July 4th weekend mood). What is worse than a ‘rejection’ or close is when you have a willing subject who is extremely cooperative, willing and camera friendly, but for some reason you can’t get your act together. I think I did get a few good shots, but didn’t do great justice overall to the pretty lady. So I will look at this one as a great opportunity not completely taken advantage of and learn from it.

Laura is a graphic designer by profession and stays with her best friend. One thing she likes doing – watch really bad movies. Now that was a refreshing answer. Anyways we talked a little about movies and I indicated that I recently re-watched and loved ‘Tucker and Dale vs Evil’ – and she whole-heartedly agreed saying she’s trying to get her friends to watch it (and if you’ll have not watched it please do if you like your humor dark)

Thanks Laura for participating on the project!! Wish you all the very best for your future and hope to see you around!

Freelance Photographer and Graphic Designer, Department of Psychology, University of Dhaka.

This is Tori.

After taking Stranger #80's photograph, I walked towards Hyde Park Corner.

I'm a small, bald, mild-mannered graphic designer. I have a nasally northern accent. If I met myself I wouldn't be suspicious, I would probably shake my own hand and smile politely. Can I take your photo for a photography project? Yes, sure, go ahead, I'd reply to myself. But as I've said before, my experience of asking women permission to take their photograph, usually gets a polite, but firm 'no'.

Are women more self-critical? I've had quite a few, 'Sorry, but I don't look good in photos.' To which I awkwardly reply, 'Oh, come, come. I'm sure that's not true.' I probably don't sound convincing. I'm not a natural charmer, so my smalltalk ends there.

For that reason, I had almost given up on women. But then I saw Tori. Come on James, ask her. I did, and without hesitation she agreed. Tori appeared to have the 'F**k it, what have I got to lose' attitude I had only previously encountered with men. Talkative and friendly, we chatted about the 100 Strangers Project and cameras (Tori is a professional retoucher) until Stranger #82 arrived. They had arranged to go for a stroll around Hyde Park together, so I took their photographs and we went our separate ways.

A fascinating fact about Tori? Her earliest memory is, at the tender age of just six years old, drinking vodka and orange, then jumping in a swimming pool.

Dotty is covered from head to toe in dots, reminiscent of the patterns used in Aboriginal art and featuring a gorgeous palette of natural, earthy, ‘scorched’ colours inspired by the landscape. As the owl sculpture is sponsored by CrossCountry Trains, the dots form different shapes, which symbolise groups of people travelling to meet each other.

Artist: David Graham

David Graham teaches art at Holly Lodge Girls’ College in Liverpool and is also a freelance artist/ graphic designer. He continues to extend his artist practice by using a range of 2D and 3D media to produce his own work, as well as participating in collaborative community projects, to produce works such as murals, mosaics and ‘graffiti knitting’.

In 2009, David staged an exhibition of his pupils’ artwork on ‘The Fourth Plinth’ in Trafalgar Square, as part of Antony Gormley’s ‘One and Other’ project.

Auction Price: £4000

The Big Hoot captured the imagination of everyone in Birmingham and beyond, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets with their Big Hoot Trail maps to explore the colourful invasion of individually designed owls. Taking in the city’s 10 districts, tourists and residents alike enjoyed their owl adventure, discovering and celebrating the extraordinary creativity produced by many of Birmingham’s artistic community and over 25,000 young people.

The Big Hoot owls went under the hammer on 15 October 2015 at The Big Hoot auction sponsored by Vodafone and we are thrilled to have smashed our target by raising the incredible sum of £508,035!

The money raised from the auction will support Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity’s £3.65m Star Appeal. This appeal will enable us to create a first of its kind, a Rare Diseases Centre in the UK specifically for children. It will provide co-ordinated care, treatment, support and most importantly hope to children and families living with a rare or undiagnosed condition.

In addition the auction raised £15,000 for G’owl’d by Temper with proceeds going to Edward’s Trust, and £7,800 for Fleet and Free with proceeds going to Birchfield Harriers.

So thank you - we simply couldn’t have done it without you.

Artists have played a major role in The Big Hoot, creating almost 100 owl sculptures. We would like to thank all the artists for their incredible creativity and hard work.

Professional artists from Birmingham, the wider Midlands region and further afield have created extraordinary giant owls that are all unique in style and character and represent the city’s creativity, history and heritage, music, fashion, architecture and attractions.

Birmingham is home to a wealth of artistic and creative individuals and communities and many award-winning and nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. We are delighted with the response from Birmingham’s creative community and are thrilled to work in collaboration with them to transform the streets, squares and parks of the city.

For five months artists have been creating owls in their studios, at home and in The Big Hoot Artists’ Studio at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. Their inspiring and innovative designs have been realised in genres including graffiti, illustration, fine art, graphics, typography, mosaic and new media. They have worked with both community groups and with corporates to realise ideas and create their stunning designs.

The Big Hoot not only provides a high quality and ambitious free public event for families but also supports the creativity of artists and celebrates talent and diversity. The Big Hoot has provided an inspiring relationship between the city and the arts.

The artists have also reached out to communities enabling more people to participate in the arts, to experience working with professional artists and to be inspiring and inspired. From the north to the south of the city residents groups, youth groups and older peoples’ groups have been collaborating with artists to generate ideas, design and create owls for The Big Hoot.

Creativity is everywhere but the opportunity to participate is not. A range of activities have been programmed within Birmingham’s diverse communities and people from the age of 3 – 97 and from wards within the city boundaries have contributed to The Big Hoot and helped make the event extraordinary. Our projects have seen artists working with hundreds of residents and community members including children in looked after care, older peoples’ clubs, young people and residents organisations to design and decorate the owls displayed as part of the 10 week public event.
