The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court were political drama not seen in at least a generation. And, perhaps never imbued with such emotion and vitriol. It was the perfect storm for the partisanship clash between the left and the right, and between the haves and the have-nots, one that has only grown more destructive during the last decade. The Trump presidency has only exacerbated that frustration and divide. And, the #metoo movement has stripped away any pretense that men and women are treated equally.
The problem has been magnified by the actions of old white Republican Senators who don't have a clue. They have become anachronisms. It's not just their age. Conservatives, by their nature, feel more comfortable with tradition —the way things always have been. Twenty-first century cultural and religious fundamentalists, while acknowledging a woman's place might now include working outside the home, have made it clear that patriarchy is still their rule of law.
But, the ongoing behavior of Donald Trump, and Kavanaugh's emotional accusations, especially when compared to the strong and steady testimony of Dr.Christine Blasey Ford, his sexual assault accuser, have exposed this fracture in ways that shocked and riveted the country.
This is a defining moment. Studying the trajectory of gender and racial inequality, this event shouldn't be surprising. But, it is, given how quickly and simply it came together. A woman and a man, speaking one after the other during one day on Capitol Hill.
As an old white man, I've had enough. I'm exhausted by gender politics. We need to put our energies towards adapting to our quickly changing world. We need to stave off the effects of climate change. And, we need to get back to the hopes our founding fathers and mothers had for America. It's time accept women as strong, smart, and capable of doing anything they want. It's time to acknowledge that no government has a right to dictate how a woman treats her own body. This must become the accepted "Rule of Law." The fight over Roe verses Wade must end.
Gender, like race, is no determinate of the curiosity and intelligence required to succeed. Acceptance of this is long past due. Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, I began to realize the next generation of men would do a better job of accepting women as equals and with respect. It never happened. Boys will still be boys. But, we know now, these kind of boys can be defeated.

Freedom of Speech and Freedom to Communicate Freedom to Think and See what you want -- IS NOT ABOUT CONVENIENCE, not now; not ever.
This Flickr Thing is a symptom of the real fear and danger that many of the citizens in the USA ,and all over the world, feel is doing such harm to all of us - censorship is never a good thing - That is not to say that we cannot try to protect minors against sexual explotation BUT, Flickr Members should have the Freedom of Choice - That same Freedom is what allows People of Faith to live within their religious ideas - that Freedom, to see and live within a different World View should be honored and granted to people who have different ideals of morality -
This is what The Flickr Protest is about - frankly, as I am sure many others have stated "if this were not so important an issue it would be hilarious."

A. M. Cassandre, the master designer of Art Deco. I think tears when I think of his sad ending after a productive lifetime producing the most innovative graphic design.
Cassandre took advertising into the modern age of the 1920's, especially with his use of iconographic symbols integrated with letterforms.
Flyers that get posted on a bulletin board have to be simple, act as a poster and still carry the basic information when the application form is torn off. The design of this may look stark but post it on a typical bulletin board, especially in a college environment where you have big time competition for getting attention and the starkness works for it against all of the visual dazzle already on the board.
One of my all-time favorite cartoons was one of Sad Sack peering through layers of posted material on a military display board until he had come to the board itself where a very small posted piece of paper said "Now hear this. All troops required on the green at 6:00 am. by order of General G. Washington."

Ingredients: an old italian newspaper, Adobe Illustrator, a printer, fingers, transparent tape, a black pen.
Classic example of a New Graphic Design layout using only two colors, (a two color run for a printing press is much cheaper than full color) but was an exciting visual utilizing space, tension, asymmetrical layout, and san serif letterform .

Guggenhiem Museum. The US starts to emulate the new, contemporary work of Europe. This scanned from a collection of paper bags that I picked up in my travels. I do not think the san-serif gg's are well designed. They catch my eye like a thorny vine.
A book cover designed by John Heartfield, the adopted name of Helmut Herzfelde, who had served two years in the German military, WWI. He was also a founding member of the Berlin DaDa in 1919. He was a successful graphic artist who combined photography, type and other visual effects into photomontages that fought the corruption of the Weimar Republic and the rising Nazi movement.
When the New Graphic Design issue no.1 first came to our office in 1960, my husband studied it thoroughly to find the underlying grid that the whole publication was based on. (I still have the tissue paper system that he worked out.) He was fascinated with it since the grid is essential for organization of masses of information.
There is usually a grid automatically worked out in design work for letterpress (it's the nature of the process) but with the advent of offset printing, anything goes any old place you want and especially now with designing on computer.
