Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas. Fort Jefferson is the largest, most powerful masonry fort in the entire United States and was designed to maintain control of the entry way (and some nearby deep water anchorages) to the Gulf of Mexico. Built from 1846 - 1975 out of more than 16 million bricks, it was never finished. Dr. Samuel Mudd was held here for nearly four years after setting the broken legg of John Wilkes Boothe following the assasination of President Lincoln. Nearly 70 miles west of Key West, the Dry Tortugas mark the end of the third largest barrier reef in the world. (Nathanael Miller, 26 July 2017)

The Jefferson Davis monument, built from 1917 - 1924, is a 351 foot obelisk. It is the tallest unreinforced concrete structure in the world, the second tallest obelisk in the world after the Washington Monument, and the fifth tallest monument in the U.S. The Jefferson Davis Monument State Historic Site commemorates the birth of Jefferson Davis in June 1808. The park and monument sit on land owned by Davis' parents; the land the cabin actually sat on is now the site of Bethel Baptist Church adjacent to the park itself. Fairview, Kentucky. The scrollwork and shield from the bow of the battleship USS Maine (ACR 1) on dispaly in Davenport Park. The Maine was destoyered by an explosion in Havana Harbor in 1898, and the belief in Spanish sabotage precipitated the Spanish-American War. The Quarterdeck flags and well deck fragment of USS Ponce (LPD 15) at the summit of Diamond Head. Known to the Hawaiians as Le'ahi, Diamond Head is a 300,000 year old tuff cone formed from an explosive erutpion. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter and summits at 761 feet. The summit is the site of a lost heiau (ancient Hawaiian temple of other sacred site), and was used for coastal defense by the U.S. Army through the first half of the 20th century. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world with over 400 miles of tunnels mapped. It was carved over over millions of years by the underground Styx and Echo rivers, which empty into the Green River. It was first discovered 6,000 years ago by Native Americans and has been integral to Kentucky history ever since. (Nathanael Miller, 12 Dec. 2017)

Looking for all the world like a quaint, classic 19th century structure, the Canal Greenway bridge was built in 1992. It crosses a creek that runs through the old Ohio Canal railroad towpath--today a multi-use hiking/biking trail. The towpath and bridge run parallel to the modern Canal Road. Hebron, Ohio. The new Tennessee State Museum building opened in October 2018. Telling the story of the Tennessee from prehistoric times through the modern era, its vast collection is well worth a visit. Featured artifacts include one of Daniel Boone's rifles; a rare 13-star U.S. flag with the original 6-pointed stars first mandated by Congress before the flag was changed to 5-pointed stars; a coat made by future-president Andrew Johnson when he was still a tailor; chairs used during Civil Rights sit-ins; and outfits and instruments used by Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. Seminary Ridge Museum is located in Schmucker Hall (formerly Old Dorm) on the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary campus. Visitors can tour the history of the seminary's involvement in the battle and its aftermath, as well as see the view from the famous cupola where Union Brig. Gen. Carhenge was built by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father and dedicated during the June, 1987 eclipse. It replicates Stonehenge, but also incluces an adjacent "auto-art" park. The auto-art features a station wagon repurposed into an homage to the wagons which brought the settlers west and a a peice called "The Fourd Seasons," five vertical cars (two are welded together, end to end) representing the seasons in Nebraska. The Hood Canal Bridge (officially William A. Bugge Bridge) opened in 1961 and is one of the longest floating bridges in the world (it the longest floating bridge over a saltwater tidal basin in the world). The Great Salt Lake in Utah is the largest remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric lake the once covered most of Utah and parts of Idaho. The Great Salt Lake covers an average of 1,700 square miles, but its water level fluctuates significantly. A railroad causeway across the lake's center creates differing levels of salinity in each half, resulting in the northern half of the lake taking on a reddish hue and the southern half looking more blue. Elkhorn is a real-live dead Old West mining ghost town. Established in 1872, the town boomed during the 1890s and died when the mine played out and the railroad left in the 20th century. Two structures, Gillian and Fraternity Halls, are maintained as part of Elkhorn State Park (both built in the 1890s). Many of the graves in the cemetery are of children killed by a late 19th century diptheria outbreak. There are about a dozen people still living there today. Elkhorn, Montana. Established in 1929, Cowpens National Battlefield preserves the land American Brig. General Daniel Morgan clocked the daylights out of a superior British force under Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton Jan. 17, 1781, during the British' Southern Campaign. The battle was a signficant American victory and helped put British General Lord Cornwalllis on the path that eventually led to Yorktown The battle was named for the field which farmers used to pen cattle while fattening them up prior to sending them to market in Charleston. Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Bocks Car," which dropped the "Fat Man" atomic bomb on Nagaski in August 1945. Founded in 1923, the museum is housed in four hangars on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and has more than 360 aircraft in its collection. (Nathanael Miller, 3 Dec. 2017)

Looking southwest into the crater from the northeast, the lava dome in the center of the crater is a prominent feature. Rising to 8,363 feet, Mount St. Helens lost about 1,300 feet from its height during the eruption of May, 1980. The entire north face of the mountain broke away in the largest landslide in recorded history, resulting in a lateral eruption that killed 57 people and temporarily blasted nearby Spirit Lake clear out of its bed. Battleship Cove Naval Museum was established in 1965 and has the largest collection of WWII Navy vessels in the country, centered on the battleship USS Massachusetts (BB 59). Fall River, Massachusetts. (Nathanael Miller, 21 July 2018)

The U.S. Air Force Armament Museum was founded in 1975. It is the only musuem dedicated primarily to the armaments carried by the Air Force, and boasts a collection of over 30 aircraft (U.S. and a few foreign), as well as hundreds of examples of munitions used by aerial warfare through history. I lived in Tallahassee from 1992 - 1997. I interned at the Museum of Florida History in 1994, and then got my first post-FSU job there from 1994 - 1995 when budget cuts slashed a number of state jobs. The museum was opened in 1977 and is housed in the R. A. Gray Building behind the state capitol. One of my early jobs was cataloguing and recording the condition of several Civil War flags before sending them for conservation, the most rare being the 5th Florida regimental flag. Other exhibits I regularly cleaned, such as the case for the builder's model of the battleship USS Florida and citrus packing house. The 24-foot high American Horse, by Nina Akamu. It was inspired by a work created by Leonardo da Vinci. The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a 158-acre (64 ha) botanical garden and outdoor sculpture park. It has a rather huge tropical conservatory, extensive Japanese garden, and winding paths that combine the natural and the art world by mixing the Meijers' sculpture collection into the garden landscape.
