Model of USS Forrestal (CV 59) made from 48,000 matchsticks. Ripley's Believe It or Not, or Ripley's Odditorium, is a museum of curiosities that is part of the Ripley's chain around the world. This particular building is built to look like it was fractured by an earthquake along the nearby New Madrid faultline like the ones that hit hte area in 1811 and 1812. Branson, Missouri. Carhenge was built by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father and dedicated during the June, 1987 eclipse. It replicates Stonehenge, but also incluces an adjacent "auto-art" park. The auto-art features a station wagon repurposed into an homage to the wagons which brought the settlers west and a a peice called "The Fourd Seasons," five vertical cars (two are welded together, end to end) representing the seasons in Nebraska. Mount goats on Mount St. Helens. Rising to 8,363 feet, Mount St. Helens lost about 1,300 feet from its height during the eruption of May, 1980. The entire north face of the mountain broke away in the largest landslide in recorded history, resulting in a lateral eruption that killed 57 people and temporarily blasted nearby Spirit Lake clear out of its bed. Mount Rainier's southern face from Paradise. The volcano continues to rise for more than 9,000 feet to the summit. The Paradise area, located at an elevation of 5,400 feet, is one of the most famous and visited areas of Mount Rainier National Park. USS Arizona (BB 39). Arizona was hit by an armor-piercing bomb that detonated her forward magazines during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The ship exploded, killing 1,177 of the 1,512 sailors on board at the time (about half of the lives lost during the attack). Of these dead, 1,102 are still aboard. Arizona was commissioned in 1916 and decommssioned in 1942. The memorial was built in 1962 and is visited by about 2 million people annually. Honolulu, Hawaii. (Nathanael Miller. 20 April 2018)

The Kensington Runestone Museum features the Kensington Runestone, a purported runestone chronicling a 14th century Viking incursion into North America and found in Minnesota in the 1880s. The runestone is still a controversial artifact with much evidence pointing to it being a hoax, but it is part of Minnesota's cultural fabric. The museum also maintains a historic village with several 19th century buildings that have been relocated to the grounds and a 2/3-sized replica of a Viking trading ship. Alexandria, Minnesota. Naval Station Norfolk's Centennial Air Show, held at the station's Chambers Field, celebrates the naval station's 100th anniversary. Officially founded in June 1917 as the U.S. entered World War I, the naval station has grown to become the largest navy base in the world. The naval station occupies 4,300 acres on Sewells Point, has nearly 60 ships homeported along its waterfront, more than 130 aircraft based on Chambers Field, and is home to over 67,000 active duty and civilian Navy and DoD personnel. Keaiwa Heiau is the remains of a temple erected sometime in the early 17th centruy. This heiau ("hey-ee-ow") was used as a medicinal area by local kahunas (medicine men) in which to diagnose, prescribe and prepare remedies, and pray. A heiau is charactrized by a rectangular earthen mound with rock or other structures having been placed atop it. It is a sacred cultural site, so be respectful when visiting. Aiea, Hawaii. Known to the Hawaiians as Le'ahi, Diamond Head is a 300,000 year old tuff cone formed from an explosive erutpion. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter and summits at 761 feet. The summit is the site of a lost heiau (ancient Hawaiian temple of other sacred site), and was used for coastal defense by the U.S. Army through the first half of the 20th century. Honolulu, Hawaii. Windlass Hill marks the spot where the Oregon Trail left the high flatlands and descended into the lowlands of Ash Hollow and the and the North Platte River valley. No road is long, when dreams are big and sky’s the limit

 

Seen at a distance of nearly 12 miles from Tipsoo Lake, and looking past the jagged remnants of Little Tahoma Peak, is the eastern face of Mount Rainier. Mount Rainier is the highest peak of the Cascade volcanoes, rising 14,411 feet above sea level. It is also considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in North America. Little Tahoma Peak is actually part of Mount Rainier itself; Little Tahoma Peak is the remnant of a much larger version of Mount Rainier that collapsed several thousand years ago. Little Tahoma Peak rises to 11,138 feet (3,395 meters), and would be Washington State’s third highest mountain if it were structure to itself. Mount Rainier National Park Washington. The statue of Athena was finally unveiled in the Nashville Parthenon in 1990 and gilded in 2002. Created by Alan LeQuire, at nearly 42 feet high it's the tallest the indoor statue in the the Western Hemisphere. Centennial Park was the site of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. Today the full-scale replica of the ancient Athenian Parthenon and man-made Lake Watauga are the only structures left from the exposition. Nashville, Tennessee. (Nathanael Miller, 16 May 2018)
