On November 19, 2008, World Diabetes Day, St. Anthony Free Medical Clinic offered free blood sugar check ups, as well as diabetic foot and eye exams, medication review, tips on holiday diabetes control and free massages to San Francisco’s poor and homeless. St. Anthony’s effort to address the staggering rate of diabetes in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district comes at a time when nearly 24 million Americans, 8 percent of the population, are reported to have Type II diabetes. Diabetes can also lead to kidney failure, blindness and heart disease.

Diabetes in the Tenderloin

The Tenderloin district has the highest citywide rate of ambulatory hospitalizations due to diabetes, according to a 2007 Building a Healthier San Francisco’s Community Health Assessment, as well as the city’s highest concentration of people living below the poverty line. The prevalence of Type II diabetes is highest among adults from low-income households.

“Tenderloin residents lack adequate access to nutritious food and safe spaces for exercise, which dramatically impacts two of the leading factors in diabetes management- diet and exercise.” noted St. Anthony Free Medical Clinic Director, Dr. Ana Valdés. “We try to address those factors through education, active medical care, and diabetes management techniques.”

Point-of-care (POC) glucometers are the standard of care in bedside glucose management in most critical care units. Maintaining tight glycemic control (TGC) in critically ill patients is a big challenge. The challenge involves not just rapid turnaround time but also reliability of the methodology giving best accuracy. Tests are performed at bedside with results delivered in seconds. When test are completed the unit is returned to its cradle at the nurses station. There it makes the connection with a PC to automatically enter the results in the patients' electronic medical records. — at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center.

Diabetic child checking her blood sugar level. A drop of blood obtained with a lancing device is placed on a test stick and analyzed with a glucometer, a blood glucose tester. The child shows glucose levels within the normal range.

A glucometer is an instrument that measures blood sugar levels instantly - that is, in the sample provided.

This thing is pretty cool, even if it doesn't work well all the time.

It uses a cannula with a small piece of gold in it to read my blood sugar every five minutes. The large semi-circle is a transmitter which sends the data to a pager-like device I keep in my pocket.

The readings aren't very accurate, but it can help alert me to highs and lows, as well as produce some nifty graphs that show where my blood sugar numbers have been over the course of the day.

The tape covering it ensures that the sensor (which has a little weight to it) doesn't flop around too much. It also creates the very attractive ring of tape goo that you can see a bit of.

Eight technologies for a healthier 2012

Vivek Wadhwa

January 3, 2012

www.washingtonpost.com/national/on-innovations/eight-tech...

Welcome to 2012 and a new list of New Year’s resolutions — a list that likely includes some variation on adopting a healthier lifestyle. Thanks to the acceleration of technology, fulfilling your resolutions this time around may be easier than it was in 2011.

The combination of diet, exercise and sleep, according to my Singularity University colleague Daniel Kraft, are keys to good health. Kraft, a physician-scientist who chairs the medicine track and runs the FutureMed program at Singularity, believes that we can end the obesity epidemic and reduce the incidence of “non-communicable” diseases (such as heart disease) through technology. Kraft helped me put together an assessment of the technologies available today that can help you fulfill your New Year’s resolutions for good health.

1. The Digital Mirror: A written commitment is a powerful tool when it comes to motivation. That power is enhanced when the commitment, and our failure or success in achieving it, is shared with others. Today, we can broadcast our weight, whereabouts, current song selections, and our latest meal over social media. You’re more likely to maintain your motivation to lose weight when you know your friends can see your gains and losses on an easy-to-read graph.

There more than 17,000 health and fitness applications in the Android and iTunesmarketplaces. Exercise applications such asRunKeeper enable seamless pacing, tracking and scoring of workouts. My favorite when I go hiking is MotionX GPS—in addition to keeping track of how much and how fast I’ve walked, it remembers where I’ve been. Others like Skimble provide tracking and virtual coaches from a large library of workouts. There are apps for tracking your dietary indiscretions or to brag about your veggie intake. For example, The Eatery, enables you to crowd-source the healthiness of your meals. And for helping you count calories, there’s LoseIt—which claims that the average user loses 12 pounds.

2. Self-Tracking Devices: Logging in and recording data points have long been a barrier to self-tracking. Consider this barrier all but eliminated.

Web-connected scales like Withings, and blood pressure cuffs like iHealth, communicate with your smartphone and Web browser, recording your data with every use. They can also be configured to share your vital stats via e-mail or Twitter. For those who need to track blood sugars, theFDA just approved iBGStar, a glucometer integrated with the iPhone.

3. Move it or Lose it: The most effective therapy for depression, poor sleep, arthritic knees, heart disease, prevention of Alzheimer’s and many other disorders is exercise. As little as 30 minutes of active walking per day can make a massive difference in your health and longevity.

Wearable devices like the ‘FitBit’, which I use and which constantly motivates me to walk more, JawBone’s ‘Up’, and the pending ‘Basis’ heart rate and motion monitor, track the number of steps you take, calories you burn, and miles you walk. These devices provide dashboards, connect to your social networks and allow you to set goals and targets. Company divisions or work groups can leverage the social component to foster friendly competition. Meanwhile, new start-ups are emerging to engage and reward those who do.

Press photograph taken at The Hare and Hounds pub, Lothersdale, of a presentation of medical glucometers from the Airedale Diabetic Coach, given on 1st September 1981. The story was covered in the 4th September edition of the Keighley News.

In July 2021, Keighley and District Local History Society acquired an extensive collection of photograph negatives taken by the Keighley News. Groups of negatives were held in small wallets with the date and basic labelling written on the wallet. This image is developed from one of those negatives. The image was processed by Tim Neal in August 2021.

This is my cat Tiger. I've been through a lot with him! In January, we took him to the vet because he was drinking an entire bowl of water every morning and we found out he had feline diabetes. His blood sugar was over 600!! He's always been a good, loving pet and means a lot to us (especially my kids!) and we figured we should do whatever we could, no matter the cost, to make him comfortable and give him the care he deserves.

Our vet recommended a dry cat food for diabetes, and 2 units of human insulin, morning and night. Fortunately, I found a website, yourdiabeticcat.com/ that gave me some better information than I got from my vet, who believed my cat would have to have insulin shots for the remainder of his life. Tiger is 8 years old.

To make a long story short, I found out that new groundbreaking research shows that most diabetic cats can heal over time with the right treatment. This includes an all-meat diet, the proper insulin (not the same as for humans) and close monitoring of blood sugar levels.

Cats have evolved as carnivores. In the wild they would eat meat, with the only carbs coming from a few blades of grass. And yet we feed cats dry food, which is around 80% carbs, Their pancreas strains to produce enough insulin for years, and finally wears out, which is when diabetes sets in. When we changed Tiger's diet, his blood sugar level came down to 300, with no insulin involved. (There are several flavors of Fancy Feast canned food that have little or no carbs). We also were able to obtain an insulin called PZI vet, which is as close to a cat's natural insulin as possilbe--only one genetic marker away. (Human insulin doesn't work nearly as well on cats.) I also purchased a glucometer (like diabetic people use to test their own blood sugar levels) and began to test Tiger about 5 times a day. Following a chart, I gave him the appropriate dose of insulin, depending on what his levels were. My vet (and most) don't recommend testing blood sugar levels in your cat. They tell you to give a certain dose morning and night, which is very dangerous. Without testing, you could easily give too much or too little, which can result in the cat's death.

The final result? A Miracle! My cat Tiger was on this regimen for 3 weeks, during which his blood sugar level continued to decrease, until I was able to take him completely off insulin. He hasn't had any since, either. He is cured! He can never eat dry cat food again, though. If he gets too many carbs, he will digress and will need insulin once more.

Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins is the person who developed this regimen. As a vet, she had always recommended a special dry food and human insulin for her feline diabetic patients. That all changed when one of her own cats became diabetic and she found that this system didn't work well. Her cat almost died several times; his diabetes wasn't under control even though she was doing everything she thought was right. She developed the new protocol to treat feline diabetes and has since "cured" her cat and hundreds of others who come to her practice. She has an all-cat vet practice in California.

So, After my deltec cozmo broke yesterday I had to franticly search through my diabetes cart (rubbermaid drawers on wheels) and the boxes under my bed to find my old Minimed 508, some cartridges that would fit it and the strange watch batteries that it uses.

During my search I came upon this, my first meter. Fear not, that is not my bloodsugar; The one touch profile is merely halfway through its 45-second test time.

Looking at this meter, its massive bllod sample, and long wait time makes me appreciate the great meters we have today and my dexcom CGMS (which should be arriving TODAY!.

I do a fair bit of photography. I use a light meter for measuring incident light and adjusting the shutter speed and/or aperture. Along with my light meter, my blood glucose meter is now an indispensable part of my kit. Without both meters, I'd have a problem measuring the two things that matter to me: light and blood glucose.

There is no cure for diabetes, yet.

Diabetes is one of the most common human imperfection. It is basically an insufficient or non-production of insulin which is produced by the pancreas. Insulin converts sugar into energy. Thus, the absence of insulin in the body causes the sugar to be wasted and eventually ruin the organ's metabolism.

Insulin injections and other form of hypoglycemic agents help sustain sugar conversion in the body. It is necessary to monitor sugar levels by testing via glucometer in a regular basis. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle is the key to a prolonged and well-maintained life.

This is the port that feeds data to the CGMS device. Also, my usual insulin infusion site - everything is labeled.

Spc. Erika Valento, 829th Engineer Company, checks a detainee's blood sugar with a portable glucometer while making her rounds in the Remembrance II Theater Internment Facility at Camp Cropper. Valento works as part of a medical team that administers health care at the wire for over 3,000 Camp Cropper detainees. Photo provided by the 829th Engineer Company.

So, I got my Dexcom CGMS last week. I love it, but I want more from it. I want a device that can check my bloodsugar like it does. I don't want to have to calibrate it twice a day. (especially using mutiple finger sticks. I want the CGMS system to communicate with my pump and make adjustments to both basal and bolus insulin deliveries. I want all of this, and I want my insurance to cover.

Amani, a Jordanian women, is seen by volunteers in Marka. Amani's husband, two sons and daughter are in Syria, where she used to live with them. She had to return to Jordan when she had health problems and needed care, so she had to leave her family behind, and they are unable to come to Jordan to be with her. She is a volunteer English teacher in Jordan and talks to her family by phone, but says the connection is bad and she can hardly hear them. Two grandchildren have been born since she left whom she hasn't yet met, but she is very proud of them. She has diabetes and requires regular medical care but can't afford the testing strips. SAMS provided her with a new glucometer and testing strips to help her manage her condition. "Thanks for coming to Jordan to help us, to help all the poor people," she said. "From all of us in Jordan we would like to welcome you to Jordan." Syrian-American Medical Society (SAMS) clinic in Marka in Jordan, on Monday, April 2, 2018. (James Buck / SAMS)
