I've no idea what this bird is, does anyone know? It's had a very heavy crop.

With thanks to DaveSPN for the ID. It's also a first for me.

Better viewed large, and thank you for your favourites. :)

Magheraclogher Strand, Bunbeg, Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland

Cara Na Mara (Friend of the sea) or ‘Bád Eddie’ are the names given to this old wreck resting on Magheraclogher Beach along Donegal's 'Wild Atlantic Way'. The Cara Na Mara fishing vessel ran into trouble & was beached here in the early 1970s never to move another inch since. The boat has now deteriorated rapidly, sadly one half of the boat is gone completely.

I feel somewhat saddened at ‘Bad Eddie’ having to watch other boats sail past each day, admittedly I’m overthinking again & I do understand the boat doesn’t have actual feelings but everyone who has grew up visiting & respecting the Bad Eddie shipwreck over the past 50 years does. I’m not ashamed to admit that I feel emotional each time I visit nowadays knowing her days are now numbered. It’s only a matter of time before she is broken up & taken by the sea.

On the brighter note I still find this old wreck as stunning looking today as I did as a child. Even though she’s barely hanging together with a few rusty nails. There’s beauty in decay & ‘Bad Eddie’ sure knows how to rock this eternal beauty 💃 It may be just my own preference, but I will continue to visit & photograph this boat until the sea finally claims her back forever….

Hope you enjoy! Please Favourite & Follow to view my newest upcoming works, Thank you

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

Given to me once but species unknown.

Thank you everyone so much for sharing your quality photos which is a great way to see and keep in touch with the world from home. Also for your kind comments and favours which are much valued. I am not able to take on any more members to follow or to post to groups. I prefer not to receive invites to groups

Given today's ugly winter weather here, it seems surprising that this was photographed about a month ago.

Hiding in the roots of a big tree on the river bank. Far off the beaten path. Shocked to see me.

Pearl Jam - Given to Fly

He could’ve tuned in, tuned in

But he tuned out

A bad time, nothing could save him

Alone in a corridor, waiting, locked out

He got up outta there, ran for hundreds of miles

He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree

The wind rose up, set him down on his knee

A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw

Delivered him wings, "Hey, look at him now"

Arms wide open with the sea as his floor

Oh, power, oh

He's.. flying

Whole…

High.. wide, oh

He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share

His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere

But first he was stripped and then he was stabbed

By faceless men, well, fuckers

He still stands

And he still gives his love, he just gives it away

The love he receives is the love that is saved

And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky

A human being that was given to fly

High.. flying

Oh, oh

High.. flying

Oh, oh

He’s…flying

Oh, oh

As best one can given the smoky atmosphere throughout Canada and the northern United States from rampaging Canadian wildfires in the provinces of Nova Scotia, Québec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

All told, the Canadian government estimates there are now approximately 414 fires raging across Canada (239 out of control) encompassing 1,396,659 square miles, the equivalent of 5 million football fields). In Canada, the majority of wildfires are caused by lightning striking dry forests and yes, a large number are also caused by humans through carelessness. This past winter was drier than normal and a very hot, dry spring turned parts of the country into a giant tinderbox.

Overworked Canadian forest firefighters have been reinforced by 700 additional firefighters from the United States, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and for that help we are very appreciative. PM Justin Trudeau also asked the EU for assistance and as a result there are another 280 additional firefighters coming from France, Spain and Portugal as well. Huge thanks to them also.

Canadian government Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair has said the arrival of cooler weather and rain in some parts of the country will certainly help the firefighters. Canada has 362 million hectares (almost 900 million acres) of forested land across the country.

Given the shutter speed, albeit in high wind, I've still no real idea how I made this one :)

The name kestrel is given to several members of the falcon genus, Falco. Kestrels are most easily distinguished by their typical hunting behaviour which is to hover at a height of around 10–20 metres over open country and swoop down on prey, usually small mammals, lizards or large insects. Other falcons are more adapted to active hunting in flight. Kestrels are notable for usually having mostly brown in their plumage.

Triples

These racing spaceships were given their confusing names because of the geometry of their fins. Two ships were built, number 25 and number 52.

I built this ship as an experiment with Pythagorean Triples. the fins are 7, 24, 25 triangles. However, in Lego it is necessary to add one to each side to allow for the stud on the SNOT brick on each corner being halfway along it. This makes the triangles 8, 25, 26, which is a nice ratio to build in Lego.

There are couple of images of the internal structure and the detachable cockpit pod here:

Whoever from the L.D.S.P.B. was given the Latrigg brief deserves a special mention in the annals of building and design, medium sized hills. The positioning and orientation of this modest height gives wonderful views of the surrounding area, no direction is without interest. Whoever you are sir, I take my hat off to you.

Here we look across the bed of what was at one time an extended lake, the joining of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, towards Causey Pike , Grasmoor, Grisedale Pike and Whinlatter Forest. The Bishop's rock just visible on Barf ( sorry Chuck!) under Lord's Seat.

When I joined Flickr, it was so I could enter a photographic competition. I never imagined, fifteen years later that I would have so many followers, have shared so many images, or have made some of the best friends I have (even ones whom I have never physically met but have connected with emotionally and spiritually). Thanks to Flickr, and the exposure it has given my work, my images have appeared in books, journals and magazines around the world, I appear on numerous websites, and I have three postage stamps all featuring my images. The world of social media can be ruthless, yet here on Flickr, I have found a kind, friendly and receptive community of like minded people ready to embrace other members. I have much to be grateful about, thanks to Flickr.

So, happy twentieth birthday, Flickr! Thank you for everything you are, and all that you do. I am paying tribute to this wonderful platform by using the Flickr livery of bright blue and hot pink in a still life using my latest obsession, cotton spools.

When it was my birthday a few months ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.

Amongst the gifts was a pretty ribbon of vibrant blue and white embroidered daisies, some blue, magenta and pink crocheted daisies from Poland, some Estonian hand dyed lace and some tiny segments of crochet, all of which I have set up on the back terrace against one of my antique embroidered Art Deco doilies from the 1930s, and accessorised with some peacock blue silver and enamel buttons from Birmingham, hallmarked 1910, some tiny Japanese cloisonné vest buttons from the 1880s, some pink rose buttons from the 1960s, a Victorian spool of W. and J. Knox peacock blue linen thread and a spool of Dewhurst's Sylko Rose Pink cotton which dates from between 1938 and 1954.

W. and J. Knox Ltd was first established over two centuries ago when the Knox family set up a small textile mill in Kilbirnie to spin the locally-grown flax fibre and to manufacture linen thread. It was first registered as a company in 1778 then subsequently named W. and J. Knox in the 1800s by the sons of the founder. The Knox family was involved with the company for the first 200 years, with ownership passing through the generations, and agents being set up all over the world. Hearsay places an agent in New Zealand only ten years after Captain Cook’s discovery, and written records show trade agreements in place in the early 1800s in Canada. Cosalt plc purchased the company from Linndustries in the 1970s, with ownership passing to the local management team in 2004, following an MBO. Two centuries after opening, Knox is still based in the same Ayrshire town, and is now owned by the local management team, following an MBO from Cosalt plc in 2004.

Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

Given the overcast skies and intermittent rain that day, I decided to angle my SLR camera slightly downward capturing the grassland and smaller formations to my front. I could then work an angle to include the upper portions of the butte and pinnacles off in the distance. I found the nearby towering badlands a nice contrast across this national park setting to more distant ones. I later used a Pro Contrast and Skylight CEP filter in Capture NX2 for the final image to address what I felt was the more muted colors from the overcast skies above.

Montcalm and Wicker Sts., Ticonderoga, New York USA • Liberty Monument is a historic monument located at Ticonderoga in Essex County, New York. It was built in 1924 and is a bronze sculpture on a tiered granite base. The lower part of the sculpture is composed of four live-sized figures of a Native American, Frenchman, Englishman, and an American. They symbolize the four groups whose military exploits are part of Ticonderoga's past. The second part is the [prolific] artist Charles Keck's (1875-1951) interpretation of Liberty.

It was built and donated by philanthropist Horace Augustus Moses. Born in Ticonderoga, Moses became wealthy building and acquiring a number of paper mills that he combined to form the Strathmore Paper Company. As his wealth grew, he made a series of substantial donations to many Ticonderoga projects, among which were the Valley View Cemetery Chapel, Liberty Monument, the Moses-Ludington Hospital, the Community Building, and the Hancock House; with the last of these, he accomplished an early lifetime ambition— to establish a museum with a library that would make Ticonderoga a focal point for public interest in the region's history. – from Wikipedia entry. ∆ The monument was cast by Roman Bronze Works N.Y.

Liberty Monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places (#89002014), on November 16, 1989.

Paddle Boarder, Vancouver. Given the distance this guy paddle boarded, it was no wonder he took a break to simply take in all the beauty of Vancouver's North Shore. On his way back, I was astonished at his speed. No sooner had I taken the photo of him in front of the tanker (with the houses of West Vancouver in the background) when he was already "midship" and then past it!

The haze in these shots is due to the smoke from BC's wildfires drifting down to the coast. Still occurring as late as today, a day after "Fire Season" officially ended despite 153 active fires still burning in the province at a "mere" cost of $510 Million (and counting). And 65,000 residents evacuated over the summer. And still I see drivers carelessly tossing cigarettes out their vehicles.

Perhaps they need to spend some time paddle boarding out on the ocean taking in these grand views to appreciate the preciousness of the Nature which sustains us!

If given the choice, I will always take a natural perch over a man-made one. But I couldn't pass up this opportunity with the weathered terracotta roof and the colorful background.

This was another active bird that rarely perched for more than a few seconds, so I was thankful he posed long enough for this shot.... Taken in Cusco, Peru.

This month I've been given the opportunity to go up to the roof of Fort Dunlop as many times as I like as part of their 100th birthday celebrations. I went up expecting some lovely views back across Birmingham, but found instead that most of those views were blocked by pylons, so I had to get creative.

I made it up a little late in the day, but there was some lovely sunset light emanating from the clear sky, and the planes taking off from BHX would occasionally bank, cutting across the circular structure in the middle.

The processing is somewhat inspired by the likes of Neil Burnell, whose clean monochrome images really resonate in me. I had to work out how to get the best out of this, but it's really fun to do something a little different.

The area that was to become West Palm Beach was settled in the late 1870s and 1880s by a few hundred settlers who called the vicinity "Lake Worth Country." These settlers were a diverse community from different parts of the United States and the world. They included founding families such at the Potters and the Lainharts, who would go on to become leading members of the business community in the fledgling city. The first white settlers in Palm Beach County lived around Lake Worth, then an enclosed freshwater lake, named for Colonel William Jenkins Worth, who had fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida in 1842. Most settlers engaged in the growing of tropical fruits and vegetables for shipment the north via Lake Worth and the Indian River. By 1890, the U.S. Census counted over 200 people settled along Lake Worth in the vicinity of what would become West Palm Beach. The area at this time also boasted a hotel, the "Cocoanut House", a church, and a post office. The city was platted by Henry Flagler as a community to house the servants working in the two grand hotels on the neighboring island of Palm Beach, across Lake Worth in 1893, coinciding with the arrival of the Florida East Coast railroad. Flagler paid two area settlers, Captain Porter and Louie Hillhouse, a combined sum of $45,000 for the original town site, stretching from Clear Lake to Lake Worth.

On November 5, 1894, 78 people met at the "Calaboose" (the first jail and police station located at Clematis St. and Poinsettia, now Dixie Hwy.) and passed the motion to incorporate the Town of West Palm Beach in what was then Dade County (now Miami-Dade County). This made West Palm Beach the first incorporated municipality in Dade County and in South Florida. The town council quickly addressed the building codes and the tents and shanties were replaced by brick, brick veneer, and stone buildings. The city grew steadily during the 1890s and the first two decades of the 20th century, most residents were engaged in the tourist industry and related services or winter vegetable market and tropical fruit trade. In 1909, Palm Beach County was formed by the Florida State Legislature and West Palm Beach became the county seat. In 1916, a new neo-classical courthouse was opened, which has been painstakingly restored back to its original condition, and is now used as the local history museum.

The city grew rapidly in the 1920s as part of the Florida land boom. The population of West Palm Beach quadrupled from 1920 to 1927, and all kinds of businesses and public services grew along with it. Many of the city's landmark structures and preserved neighborhoods were constructed during this period. Originally, Flagler intended for his Florida East Coast Railway to have its terminus in West Palm, but after the area experienced a deep freeze, he chose to extend the railroad to Miami instead.

The land boom was already faltering when city was devastated by the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. The Depression years of the 1930s were a quiet time for the area, which saw slight population growth and property values lower than during the 1920s. The city only recovered with the onset of World War II, which saw the construction of Palm Beach Air Force Base, which brought thousands of military personnel to the city. The base was vital to the allied war effort, as it provided an excellent training facility and had unparalleled access to North Africa for a North American city. Also during World War II, German U-Boats sank dozens of merchant ships and oil tankers just off the coast of West Palm Beach. Nearby Palm Beach was under black out conditions to minimize night visibility to German U-boats.

The 1950s saw another boom in population, partly due to the return of many soldiers and airmen who had served in the vicinity during the war. Also, the advent of air conditioning encouraged growth, as year-round living in a tropical climate became more acceptable to northerners. West Palm Beach became the one of the nation's fastest growing metropolitan areas during the 1950s; the city's borders spread west of Military Trail and south to Lake Clarke Shores. However, many of the city's residents still lived within a narrow six-block wide strip from the south to north end. The neighborhoods were strictly segregated between White and African-American populations, a legacy that the city still struggles with today. The primary shopping district remained downtown, centered around Clematis Street.

In the 1960s, Palm Beach County's first enclosed shopping mall, the Palm Beach Mall, and an indoor arena were completed. These projects led to a brief revival for the city, but in the 1970s and 1980s crime continued to be a serious issue and suburban sprawl continued to drain resources and business away from the old downtown area. By the early 1990s there were very high vacancy rates downtown, and serious levels of urban blight.

Since the 1990s, developments such as CityPlace and the preservation and renovation of 1920s architecture in the nightlife hub of Clematis Street have seen a downtown resurgence in the entertainment and shopping district. The city has also placed emphasis on neighborhood development and revitalization, in historic districts such as Northwood, Flamingo Park, and El Cid. Some neighborhoods still struggle with blight and crime, as well as lowered property values caused by the Great Recession, which hit the region particularly hard. Since the recovery, multiple new developments have been completed. The Palm Beach Mall, located at the Interstate 95/Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard interchange became abandoned as downtown revitalized - the very mall that initiated the original abandonment of the downtown. The mall was then redeveloped into the Palm Beach Fashion Outlets in February 2014. A station for All Aboard Florida, a high-speed passenger rail service serving Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando, is under construction as of July 2015.

Given the large number of flowers on this bush, when I looked through the viewfinder, I could not believe that the only flower in focus was this one. I just had to wait for a hummer to get close enough for a shot. I did not have to wait long.

A thoughtful gift given to us by some houseguests from abroad. Brought them outside to take a picture and immediately attracted a pollinating insect. (It’s not a bee.)

Featured in my photo essay “Flora in Focus.”

The street was given its name because of the residences of three chaplains and a bell-ringer built there during the 16th century. The four small buildings were demolished in 1708 to make room for the parsonage which is still present. Because the parsons of the German Church ("Tyska kyrkan") were housed near the street, the southern part of it was called Tyska Prästgatan ("The German Priest's Street") from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century while the northern part was called Svenska Prästgatan ("The Swedish Priest's Street"). The name revision of 1885, led to the name Prästgatan being used for the street's northern and southern extensions as well.

Before this, the north part of the street Storkyrkobrinken was known as Helvetesgränd ("Alley of Hell"), just like the surrounding area north and west of the cathedral Storkyrkan was referred to as Helvetet (Hell), a name subject to scholarly disputes. Professor Nils Ahnlund (1889–1957), interpreted it as referring to the area north of a church in popular beliefs being known as "latus plagæ damnatæ" ("the northern side of the damned") and therefore a place of disgrace suitable for suicides and criminals, a theory only corroborated by the location of the city executioner in the area. This theory was however questioned in several essays by the historian Lizzie Carlsson, who instead concluded that during the Middle Ages Helvetet was used all over Sweden for farmyards as well as other structures with a northern location. A theory, she argues, is confirmed by the fact that the "kingdom of the dead" in norse folklore is located to the north. While the presence of more distinguished residences in the Helvetet neighbourhood can be explained by the overcrowded conditions within the city walls, the name during medieval times did not have the pejorative meaning it has today, thus making the hypothesis credible.

The National Churches Trust describes St Mary's in Potterne as a “an Early English church of exceptional purity and austerity.”

A priest, and land held by the Bishop of Salisbury, was recorded at Potterne in Domesday Book of 1086, and in Victorian times, a 10th Century font was found on the site of the present day Church of England parish church of St Mary. It was built in the 13th century and has survived with little change, beyond work to the tower in the 15th century and restoration by Ewan Christian. Pevsner describes it as, “An Early English parish church of exceptional purity and indeed classicity” and linked this to the Bishops’ ownership of the manor.

The church is cruciform, with a substantial tower over the crossing, and original lancet windows. It is built of rubble stone, with ashlar to the upper tower. The south porch was added in the 14th century, and in the 15th the tower was made higher and given an elaborate battlement. Restoration in 1870–2 included re-roofing and the removal of galleries, and the stained glass is from various dates in that century.

From the 11th century, the church had been linked to All Saints at West Lavington as tithes from both churches endowed a prebendary at Salisbury Cathedral. From 1967 the benefice was held in plurality with Worton and since 2017 the parish has been part of the Wellsprings benefice, which extends to Seend, Bulkington and Poulshot.

Potterne is a village with a population of 1,544 (2021), 2 miles/3 km south of the Wiltshire market town of Devizes.

Close up view of petals of crimson daisy.

This image of the common daisy looks quite pretty or arty.

If I had taken this a year ago I probably would have deleted it !

Can't believe my garden of pink, crimson, white, mauvy daisies have given me so many pretty images.

6-car V-Set V70 arrives at Wentworth Falls with a service to Sydney Terminal.

If some of these photos look familiar, they probably are - I'm organising my photos from 2008, and taking the oppertunity to rework some of them and either upload for the first time, or replace older photos.

In the case of this photo, the original was very lacking in contrast and colour, so I dialled up the saturation and mucked around with the contrast settings. Given that all V-Set cars now wear the current "Intercity" livery, I felt this wasn't worth chucking.

Another frame of this spectacular scene that all came together for me, and that I'll forever be grateful for given that it can never be repeated. This one was a treat as a local resident stepped out in front of the train, but no fear, she was never in danger given that the train was moving at a crawl.

This scene had changed greatly in the 16 months since I last photographed it and more changes were rapidly looming on the horizon. Since my last visit in May 2023 the new loop track had been completed which obviated the need to cut inbound loaded trains into pieces to dump. The land clearing and excavation undertaken to build the loop and the new road overpass opened up a much wider view than was previously possible. In addition, to the benefit to photographers the local whitetail population seems to love CN's project as it created several large sloping meadows behind me around the loop, and in fact I saw a dozen more besides this doe.

The town, harbor, and the mighty Lake Superior are all shrouded in a thick marine layer of fog, but the cloud line cuts like a knife's edge through the yard bathing the train in some of the most epic storm light I've ever seen. A Two Harbors Yard crew on board a U793 train of loaded taconite pellets from Cleveland-Cliffs Minorca Mine which is crawling through the dump building at the prescribed 0.3 may behind a brace of classic GE C40-8s, CN 2000, 2007, and 2020. The trio were built as CNW 8501, 8507, and 8521 in Jun and Jul 1989 respectively for hauling coal out of the Powder River Basin. Later renumbered and repainted as UP 9023, 9030, and 9043 they were part of a large group retired by UP more than 24 years ago. They then served as Citirail lease units for a time until CN purchased the entire fleet between 2010-2012, and later modified a portion of those with straight air for Iron Range ore train service which has explained their unexpected longevity.

Alas after an entire second full career in heavy haul unit train service their time has come to an end as CN has modified 22 (I believe) rebuilt AC446Ms with straight air and has replaced all of these (and the EMDs on the Missabe Sub side) in 2 for 3 replacement schede on all ore trains. According to a good friend and local CN employee the end would come in a bit over a month on October 26th when the last pellet train ran down the Iron Range Sub behind a three pack of Dash-8s.

Two Harbors, Minnesota

ANother day, another Grevillea. This time, I found this 12 foot shrub just blooming. I don't know how long it flowers, but this should give y'all plenty of time to come and see it. I think that the flower of this one is one of the prettiest and certainly not quite as bold as the others which you'll see in due time.

Grevillea petrophiloides (pink pokers) is a shrub grevillea native to Western Australia. It is 1 to 3 metres high, with thin, needle-like leaves and dense, cylindrical flowers. Grevillea petrophiloides occurs in sandy and rocky areas. The fruits are sticky follicles, 5 to 7 centimetres long. The flower stalk two weeks before this was taken was like two six inch tightly packed - like catkins - and there was the promise of hundreds of stamens. I fully expect the Anna's Hummingbirds to start showing up (they're nesting right now, the only time of year when I don't see them on a regular basis). And the bee hive in the willow tree trunk down the street is just showing signs of life. It's spring!

I'd like to have given this the black background treatment, but it's just not possible with such tightly packed flowers. I knew that when I was choosing this particular branch, the only one without part of the tree as background. Rather, I could position myself to get one of the paths to be "behind" the flowers and naturally blurred at that time of day.

View large to see the individual stamen emerging.

Day 24 (v 16.0) - flying low

My wife has given her consent to my using this image of one of her Rheumatoid Arthritis treatments for this week's 'Handle With Care' theme.

Technical: this image started out as a focus stack of 15 images of the syringe on a mirror with a black background taken at f/10.0 (now that I know the sweet spot after last week's brilliant challenge!) and processed in Helicon Focus. The resulting image was then transferred to Photoshop for extensive dust-spot removal (on the mirror, not my sensor!). Back in Lightroom I applied sharpening to the whole image and a graduated filter to tone down the reflection. Finally, a radial 4-stop filter ensured the surrounding black areas were fully black!

Happy Macro Monday to everyone.
