We have always done short hikes as a family for fun, and then once our boys became involved with scouts to help prepare them for their hiking adventures. As their adventures in hiking became longer we found our hikes getting longer as well. Spring 2016 we decided to bite the bullet and try for ourselves some longer overnight adventures. 100 plus miles later we have discovered new places and have made some wonderful memories as a family and as a couple. Pushing each other to meet a goal and discovering overnights are not so bad. Now to help our youngest finish off his 100 miles before the end of the year. His scouting adventure in Wyoming this year has him a bit behind us.
Taking to the NCT with our family has become a tradition of sorts. Two years ago I took our three boys on a five week hiking adventure on the North Country Trail. Now when we head to a section of the trail when we get a day, or week to hike, it in a lot of ways is like going home. The familiarity and peace that everyone finds renews the spirit and revitalizes the body. This year one of the most memorable trips was when we snowshoed the section to the North of M10 at night on New Year's morning. Most of the forest was sleeping, but we did occasionally hear the owl calling and saw many tracks in the fresh snow. No matter what time of year, our entire family always seems to find unique and fulfilling interactions with the natural world. Reminding us, that we are all connected and that each being is sacred.

I had started this challenge with the promoting the backpacking merit badge to the local troops. The backpacking included two outings and one trail maintenance outing. My first outing was in the spring doing 22 miles on the weekend, and the other was over Labor Day weekend doing 33 miles over 5 days. The remainder of my hikes were day hikes in the Itasca Moraine Chapter area. This did promote the trail to our younger generation and seen parts of the forest that are not normally seen. I also brought my hiking buddy (dog) Aero to carry extra water for all the outings including the backpacking ones for the scouts.

Cyndi, our dog Pep, and I started the challenge Jan 1, 2016 south of Turtle Lake, North Dakota. It was -10, clear, bright blue sky; we hiked four miles that day - it was epic. To understand how epic, you have to know that we were told in May of 2015 that Cyndi's breast cancer was now terminal. We went hiking and placed her feet in the Mississippi for the first time that same day. In Dec. 2015 she decided to take the 100 mile challenge so we placed ourselves upon the open landscapes of North Dakota. On Sept.1, 2016 at the age of 42 Cyndi passed peacefully and without pain in our home. She was strong no matter how weak her body got - she hiked to the end. Our last hike on the NCT was two weeks before her passing; we had 52 miles to go. I have since been placing her ashes along the NCT with the help of our children and family and on Dec 12, 2016 south of Turtle Lake, Pep and I walked the last mile. It was -15, clear with bright blue sky ending the hike at the same point we started.
It was an awesome experience doing the 100 mile challenge! I got in the bulk of my miles on monthly hikes with our hiking group that meets on Sundays and is led by Mark Roberts. In the winter months this involved snowshoeing. In the late spring and early summer it meant dealing from time to time with lots of mosquitoes and black flies. The fall was an absolutely glorious time to be out given the lack of pests and the presence of spectacular colors (although low on reds this year). I had to jam in a lot of miles late, but it was a great opportunity to see parts of the trail I hadn't seen before. There is so much beauty in Peter Wolfe Chapter, particularly in the Trap Hills. The trail is a hidden gem that I have tried to capture on my Tumblr blog called "Life in the North Country" at NorthCountryLiving. Check it out to enjoy highlights from my 100 miles!

so this kid i use to play nitendo 64 with alot after school in 8th grade started working at my job. i havnt really seen him much cause we went to different high schools and just stopped talking. but we got to catching up at work and i saw him doing some drawings so he drew this eye ball on this textured paper and i finished everything else (including putting the blue in the eye)
pen, paint markers, white out pen, sharpies, and a prisma.
still think this needs something else. dunno. maybe a few drips from the eye or that might be to much. i dunno. im my own worst critic.
