Late last night, perhaps around 11p, a small line of severe warned cells started moving into the Whitemarsh, PA area moving WNW towards NJ. Having struck out earlier, I made my way to a small park on the water in Florence, NJ, saw some lightning, took some pictures and then started heading home.

Having to stop for gas, I stopped off outside Bristol, PA and while I was filling my tank, a huge bolt dropped out of the sky to the East. Checking radar, there was a small cell starting to take shape that had been forming around Deptford, NJ but was beginning to take off south of Medford.

I didn't want to travel too far (I still had to work today) but found a place right on the water in Bristol, PA and was able to shoot right across the river, over Burlington, directly at this cell that at this point was moving more away from me than to one side or the other, so a pretty nice line-up. This cell threw out some pretty decent bolts and I'm glad I went out.

I hiked in 4 counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The trail was well maintained and varied from soft and easy on the feet to more challenging with mud, roots and rocks. My three favorite sections were in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore going east from Sand Point, the section In Alger County between Valley Spur and Camp Au Train Road and the section in Marquette County from Kawabagum Road to Lakenenland. I led groups of 9 to 15 people on all these sections this year after discovering them myself. We started early and went out for lunch after. I am 70 years old and almost all the people walking with me were just a little younger. What a great way to socialize and exercise. The 100 mile patch gave me a goal and got the body moving through space. Thanks for this great trail and program. My photo was taken in late July 2016 from the top of the Pictured Rocks east of Sand Point and is looking toward Grand Island.

Try to do wooden handles for my spyderco Pingo.

My husband and I had our first backpacking experience in the summer of 2015 with a 6 mile, two day hike by Lake Michigan. We were astounded by how hard it was to hike with 30 lbs strapped to your back through sand dunes. We marveled at other backpackers who could hike 10+ miles a day for multiple days in a row. Not us...no way, I thought. One year later we were shuttled to the Grand Marais visitor center to begin our 42 mile Pictured Rocks backpacking adventure along the NCT with some friends. For the first 20 minutes or so, we chattered excitedly about the trip ahead. Soon, however, conversation trailed off as we realized how incredibly far away we were being dropped off from our car. Is this a crazy idea? Over the next few days, we hiked through woods, streams, fields, beaches, and alongside breathtaking scenery. The last 10 miles of our hike was fueled by promises of hot dogs and cold beer. We've come a long way, babe...and made a great adventure of it!

Our house in the snowstorm the night of Jan 29th. We got absolutely nothing in the blizzard of Feb. 5-6. It made me really sad.

Yes, I completed the 100mi challenge. But this was so much more. It was the first 100mi on my new knee cap put in at Christmas. It was the first 100 for my rescue puppy after her broken leg healed. It was the first 100 miles developing trust and a loving bond with my new best friend.

Zoo time with the little one 😊 the Snow leopards let us have a close look at them today , awesome !

Began the adventure in the snow near Mackinaw City in MI and ended in the snow at Lost Nation State Game Area, MI. A group of MI women who backpack/hike/canoe/cross-country ski together, loosely named The Tribe, challenged one another to undertake the NCT challenge. Some of us started in February at the end of our cross-country ski outing. Others joined in for spring and summer trips/hikes in MI. In September, I was joined by my husband at the NCT convention in Fargo and added a few more miles. We were out of the country in October/November and most of December, so it was a challenge to fit in my last 4.4 miles, since we live almost two hours from the closest NCT section. I finished today! Thanks for inspiring me and also many of my good friends to get out and enjoy the trail. Keep up the good work.

Cyndi, our dog Pep, and I started the challenge Jan 1, 2016 south of Turtle Lake, North Dakota. It was -10, clear, bright blue sky; we hiked four miles that day - it was epic. To understand how epic, you have to know that we were told in May of 2015 that Cyndi's breast cancer was now terminal. We went hiking and placed her feet in the Mississippi for the first time that same day. In Dec. 2015 she decided to take the 100 mile challenge so we placed ourselves upon the open landscapes of North Dakota. On Sept.1, 2016 at the age of 42 Cyndi passed peacefully and without pain in our home. She was strong no matter how weak her body got - she hiked to the end. Our last hike on the NCT was two weeks before her passing; we had 52 miles to go. I have since been placing her ashes along the NCT with the help of our children and family and on Dec 12, 2016 south of Turtle Lake, Pep and I walked the last mile. It was -15, clear with bright blue sky ending the hike at the same point we started.

Hike 100 gave me several opportunities to spend time with my teenage son, which led to great conversations and memories that would not have otherwise happened. A few pictures from our excursions are attached, including a balancing act diversion with the blaze nearby, some raccoon friends on the trail (there was a mother and 5 little ones just a few feet from the trail, be we only got a couple in the picture), and my son using my Jeep as a boat at the end of a long day of hiking. At different points also saw at least a dozen deer, two bald eagles up close, a lynx, several grouse - one of whom got a little aggressive with us, quail, a vulture eating a large rat snake, various types of ducks and geese, a loon, different types of woodpeckers, a scarlet tanager, and the usual assortment of other common Michigan birds and small animals. Awesome! Thanks for the challenge!

NCNST thru hike/run E2E. Started 04/10/2016 on the AT at Killington, VT. Finished 10/30/2016 at Lake Sakakawea State Park, ND. 4,700 miles, 6 months 20 days. Beginning this undertaking little did I know the challenges that would await me; but in the end, each challenge just made the finish all that more rewarding. By thru hiking E2E I was privileged to see a large part of the country, each region unique in its own way. By simply placing one foot in front of another, I witnessed how each of these regions were united, one region transitioning into the next East to West. Whenever I am hiking a trail I often find it difficult to stop, always wanting to see what's around the next corner. And for me, thru hiking E2E allowed me to see what was around every corner. A hiking trail exists to be hiked, and that I did every day. At the beginning, hiking was the focus. As my journey progressed, I found that it was more than just hiking that was the reward, it was the people I met along the way.

Meet our 1,000th Hike 100 Finishers!

My daughter, Andrea, and I hiked all of our 100 miles together. Andrea is 27 years old and has autism. She is non-verbal and doesn't read or write. But she LOVES to hike, especially in the woods. She has a good trail sense! And she knows her blue blazes. We loved doing the Hike 100 Challenge together, as it was something we both enjoy and it gave both of us a great sense of working toward and accomplishing a goal. I planned it so our final miles were near Grand Marais, Michigan. We made a weekend outing out of it and completed our 100th mile at the "Log Slide". Thanks so much for giving us this opportunity!

My 100 miles began in July when we celebrated my niece's 40th birthday by walking the 40 miles along the Pictured Rocks National Forest shoreline. My niece, her 14 year old daughter, and I actually completed 60 miles in those three days, the rest of our family joining us for the final 15. It was truly one of the best experiences of my lifetime, the scenery along the trail rendering us completely speechless at times. My husband and our 12 pound shih tzu joined me for most of the rest of the 100 over the next months, the miles completed mostly on weekend camping trips at or near Soldier Lake, Michigan. The last 15, we completed back at Pictured Rocks earlier this month.
