The King Range National Conservation Area (NCA) encompasses 68,000 acres along 35 miles of California’s dramatic north coast. Here, the landscape was too rugged for highway building, forcing State Highway 1 inland. This remote region of mountains and seascapes is known as California’s Lost Coast and is accessible only by a few back roads. It is the Nation's first NCA, designated in 1970.

Offshore rocks, tidepools and kelp beds are inhabited by seals, sea lions and a variety of marine birds. California grey whales can be spotted offshore in winter and spring. The mountains are a mix of Douglas-fir forest, chaparral and grassland, providing habitat for black-tailed deer and black bear. A herd of Roosevelt elk roams the area from Chemise Mountain south into Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Curiously, although this is the wettest spot in California, hot dry summer winds make the King Range too dry to support the redwood forests that surround it on three sides.

Nearly 300 species of native and migratory birds have been spotted in the King Range making it a birders paradise. The old-growth forest is important habitat for the northern spotted owl, bald eagle, and Cooper’s hawk.

What a great experience! I didn't hear about the challenge until May, but believed I could complete it with 'plenty of time'. The biggest challenge, with a full time job, family, a house under renovation, and living an hour from the nearest trail head, was making time to get out there. Between all that, planned vacations nowhere near the trail, holidays and sickness, I finished the last 8.27 miles in snowshoes and 18 degree weather. I used to be a 50+ degree hiker, but I was determined to finish. I am so glad I did. The trail was beautiful, my son met a new friend he's still in contact with, and I pushed my limits farther than I thought I would ever want to-enjoying it the whole way! I also got my 60's mom on the trail, my 9 year old son did 13 miles in one day, and my 6 year old daughter did 10 miles in one day.

Thunder Over the Boardwalk 2022 | A Salute To Those That Served

The Red Hills Management Area consists of 7,100 acres (slightly more than 11 square miles) of public land located near the intersection of State Highways 49 and 120, just south of the historic town of Chinese Camp in Tuolumne County.

In the Red Hills buckbrush and other shrubs provide browse and seeds for small populations of mammals, including mule deer, jackrabbits, rodents. Coyotes, bobcats and fox can also be found in the Red Hills.

88 bird species have been observed in the Red Hills. Some common species include mourning dove, acorn woodpecker, ash-throated flycatcher, scrub jay, wrentit, plain titmouse, bushtit, Bewick's wren, and house finch. Valley quail and mourning doves are the major game birds in the Red Hills. An abundant insect population supports insectivorous birds including western kingbirds, ash- throated flycatcher, tree swallows, barn swallows, black phoebes, and others. Raptors include the red-tailed hawk, Cooper's hawk, prairie falcon, and great horned owl. Fish-eating birds seen in the Red Hills include the belted kingfisher and great blue heron. Roadrunners can also be found.

Four sensitive species of animals are known from the Red Hills. Wintering bald eagles roost along the shores of Don Pedro Reservoir and have been observed where Six Bit Gulch enters the lake. As many as 20 bald eagles have been sighted during the winter on the shores of Don Pedro Reservoir, roosting in stands of foothill pines.

I completed most of my miles last winter, January through April, and dedicated my efforts to my best friend, Alison, who was going through a year of interferon treatment for cancer. When I reached 98 miles, I stopped, and waited for Alison. She is an avid walker and runner, and during her treatment, she was unable to even walk 1/2 mile. In September, upon completion of her treatment, we walked my last two miles together on the trail north of Marquette. The Hike 100 will forever be a milestone in both our lives. She plans to do it herself in 2017!

Hiking the North Country Trail on Oct. 16 north of Lake Owen in Bayfield Co, WI my wife and I hiked through a 1.5 mile section of sugar maples trees in full golden color. The canopy was like golden stars and the maple shrubs carpeted the forest floor with thousands of gold sparks. A magical moment on the North Country Trail.

vinnbrooks: great shot my friend!

I started this journey with my son, to get into shape for Scout camp. Shortly after we started hiking, it was clear to me that my body just couldn't handle it. My doctor was getting angry with me because I kept pushing myself, so after only 20 miles, I decided maybe the doctor was correct. I stopped hiking. Then after a while of feeling depressed because I love being outside and loved the hiking, I decided to go against my doctors orders, I was going to finish this thing. I started hiking again after the kids went to school, so there was no one to stop me. I then injured my foot at home, and was laid up for 6 weeks, thinking I would never finish, but I was determined to prove to myself, my kids, and the world, I am not a quitter. I don't give up. Last week, I started out on Monday needing 46 miles to finish the challenge. So I pushed myself to finish before snow comes and covers Michigan and locks me indoors. I finished yesterday. A beautiful Day! Thank you for the Challenge. I did it!

I started with a day trip on the NCT, north of the US10 highway in the Manistee State Forest where a two-lane dirt track meandered through the woodlands. A road trip to the Marquette area gave me an opportunity to walk the trail by Little Presque Isle which borders on Lake Superior and offered stunning vistas of the shoreline. My greatest challenge was another road trip to Marquette where I completed 55 miles in a 4-day time span. A portion of the trail was conjoined with the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and sites along the trail were the Chocolay River, Carp River, ore dock, Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse, McCarty’s Cove, Picnic Rocks, and the Lake Superior shoreline. Tahquamenon Falls was another stop where the autumn colors were glorious. Lastly I drove to Hillsdale which is the nearest point of the NCT to my home. The trail ran along the Baw Beese Lake and offered stunning visuals of the fall foliage. All mileage was calculated using my smart phone and Pedometer software.

What a wonderful experience this was. I finished up my 100 miles on the Lowell portion of the NCT. Just before I hit the mile marker, I crossed paths with a coyote somewhere between the Boy Scout Cabin and Fallasburg Park. Man, that was such an honor to witness! When I finished my hike that afternoon I asked myself, "What's next for me now that I have completed my 100 mile goal?" Then it hit me: I still have over 4000 miles of the NCT that I need to explore! I cannot wait to hike the next 100 miles and beyond. It's been a great hike so far, but I know I have a lot more to accomplish on the NCT in the future.

Playing with multiple exposures: tree line on trail sign.

A summer project of hiking the NCT from the East boundary of the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota, heading West to Itasca State Park, and the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River started with spring (in May) and finished with fall (in early November). The NCT was in excellent condition and ran through an outstandingly beautiful section of northern Minnesota.

Grateful for the cool air, colorful, crunchy leaves, quiet time alone to walk and reflect.

I started this challenge with the Dayton Hiker's on New Year's Day. The most memorable hike was on Valentine's Day. We all knew it would be snowing, but never expected the small blizzard like weather we ended up with. The hike started off cold, but a nice winter's day. I had got lost and arrived late luckily a married couple also came late, so I went with them. By the time we met the first group going back the snow started falling, by the time we turned around it was dumping. As we finally made our way up the hill to the parking lot, the wind was trying to blow us back on the trail. The hiking was fun and easy, the drive back home was not. The freeways were covered in snow and my car slipped and slide all the way home. I was never so glad to be back on good ole terra firma. It has taken me awhile to complete this challenge. Our leader injured her toe and I did the rest on my own, but have enjoyed every minute getting out and enjoying the beautiful North Country Trails.
