Georgetown High School (now an GISD Admin Building)

507 E University

Georgetown, TX

Opened: 1923

Architect: Charles H Page

Style: Spanish Colonial Revival

Built in 1923-24 on the original site of Southwestern University, this structure served as Georgetown High School for over fifty years. Designed by Austin architect Charles H. Page and exhibiting influences of the Spanish Colonial Revival style of architecture, the building features a Baroque entryway with cast stone detailing that includes motifs of shells, flowers, urns, and garlands. A gymnasium was added to the back of the building in the 1940s.

Had an incredible opportunity to take photos in at a private residence named Georgetown.

This little town was built by a man named George Smith who wanted to showcase all of the items he had collected while working in Hollywood.

I am not sure how big the entire property is, but it has enough room for this dilapidated town that includes a bar, a cantina, a hotel, a garage, a station house, and a lot more. Evidently he built one building a year, full scale.

The buildings are filled with what he collected. We could go in some of the buildings, others were too dangerous to enter because they were falling apart.

It was a fascinating trip, and a little sad. George Smith died about 12 years ago and his town is slowly decaying. Felt that I had a real opportunity to see something that might not survive ten years down the road.

Was able to go thanks to my Sonoma County Photography Meetup group, which arranged this trip with the permission of the family who lives there now.

Truly an American Ghost Town, even though no one ever actually lived there.

The Georgetown waterfront in Washington, DC

We were directed onto one of the larger moorings from Georgetown Yacht

Basin. "These are 400 pound moorings - they'll hold you," said Ivan, the

dockmaster. Now I own three moorings in Castine. The two for aCappella have

5,000 and 10,000 pound stones on them. 400 pounds didn't seem very large

but it was dead calm six miles up the river in Georgetown.

Needless to say, we experienced wind gusts of 40-45 MPH just after dark.

The boat swung around and waves developed around us and it was quite an

event. Thankfully, the mooring didn't move but I was wondering for a

while...

Another launch into town for Tucker this morning. We walked a mile or so to

Galena and found a new Amish market called Ripples. It isn't in any of the

guidebooks and is an incredible find for cruisers. They had the best meats

and vegtables we'd ever seen. We lugged back 4 bags of goods.

Tonight we're going to the Granary for dinner. It's one of those things you

have to do when you come here.
