Discovered by European-American settlers in 1774 during a survey of the area carried out by John Floyd, this spring provides a large amount of clean freshwater, which led to the founding and growth of Georgetown in response to its presence. In 1889, the spring became the primary source of water for the private Georgetown Water Works Company, which was purchased by the City of Georgetown in 1945, leading to the subsequent creation of Royal Spring Park and opening of the municipal waterworks adjacent to the spring. The spring and adjacent park, including a log cabin built by freedman Milton Leach in 1874, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
