Jack (the Georgetown mascot) came by to visit incoming Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies students on Friday night at New North. (I was there to introduce the blog the students use to keep in touch throughout the semester.)
A bad back dictated that I travel light to the Georgetown, Texas, July 4 festivities. No tripod. I took my long zoom lens, great for the people shots I got, but not the best choice in hindsight for fireworks - especially since the show was bursting literally right over our heads as we sat on the banks of the San Gabriel River. I had to point my Canon 60D, cranked up to ISO 6400 and hand-held, almost straight up, and the 3D effect of "bombs bursting in air" was better than anything in any movie. Congratulations to Georgetown for successfully pulling off a fireworks show when other Central Texas cities bowed to the drought and fire concerns. Well done!
Georgetown Loop Railorad 1934, a General Electric centercab diesel, was tucked away nicely in the enginehouse at Silver Plume Colorado on the afternoon of September 2 2023. The steam locomotives handled the daily passenger train; there was no reason for it to be out.
The National Narrow Gauge Convention yard tour was continuously interrupted by frantic shouting over the radio. Finally the head mechanic asked the convention attendees to leave so he could figure out what was going on. Within minutes the 1934 was fired up and rushed down the mountain. One of the passenger trains apparently needed a rescue.
Earlier in the afternoon a heavy rainstorm left the tracks slick, so there was some concern about wheel slip on the steep grade. The real problem that stranded GLRR 40 and the Silver Plume train involved the brake system; the rear passenger cars kept going into emergency application, preventing the steam locomotive from ascending the canyon.
The trip down and up was extremely fast - the diesel had everything up at Silver Plume within twenty minutes of departure, then cut off the 40 and took the passengers back down to Georgetown.

Williamson County created and organized in 1848. Named for Robert McAlpin Williamson (nicknamed "Three-Legged Willie", because of his pegleg), a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto, and one of the original members of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas. Williamson County has had five courthouses, 1849, 1851, 1857, 1877 & 1911. Court was initially held under a live oak tree one block south of the courthouse square until the county’s first courthouse, a 16 foot square, one-room log house, was built in late 1848. In 1851, the county purchased a one-story, 14 x 30 foot, wood frame home with a gabled roof for $390. The home was used as the county’s second courthouse until 1857. The third courthouse was a 50 foot square, two-story rubble limestone building with 2 feet thick walls. Construction of the building was so poor it had to be repaired before it was completed. A fourth courthouse was completed in 1878. In 1910 the cornerstone was laid for the fifth courthouse, construction for the three story buff brick building with terra cotta and limestone details was completed in 1911.
