Georgetown Loop Railorad 1934, a General Electric centercab diesel, was tucked away nicely in the enginehouse at Silver Plume Colorado on the afternoon of September 2 2023. The steam locomotives handled the daily passenger train; there was no reason for it to be out.
The National Narrow Gauge Convention yard tour was continuously interrupted by frantic shouting over the radio. Finally the head mechanic asked the convention attendees to leave so he could figure out what was going on. Within minutes the 1934 was fired up and rushed down the mountain. One of the passenger trains apparently needed a rescue.
Earlier in the afternoon a heavy rainstorm left the tracks slick, so there was some concern about wheel slip on the steep grade. The real problem that stranded GLRR 40 and the Silver Plume train involved the brake system; the rear passenger cars kept going into emergency application, preventing the steam locomotive from ascending the canyon.
The trip down and up was extremely fast - the diesel had everything up at Silver Plume within twenty minutes of departure, then cut off the 40 and took the passengers back down to Georgetown.

The aged Iron doors open to a beautiful courtyard and fountain. The Corson Building in Georgetown is host to unique gourmet dining experience, it is open only a few days a week and has a family style seating arrangement.
A bad back dictated that I travel light to the Georgetown, Texas, July 4 festivities. No tripod. I took my long zoom lens, great for the people shots I got, but not the best choice in hindsight for fireworks - especially since the show was bursting literally right over our heads as we sat on the banks of the San Gabriel River. I had to point my Canon 60D, cranked up to ISO 6400 and hand-held, almost straight up, and the 3D effect of "bombs bursting in air" was better than anything in any movie. Congratulations to Georgetown for successfully pulling off a fireworks show when other Central Texas cities bowed to the drought and fire concerns. Well done!
Georgetown wasn't a tourist playtown. In almost every pretty little doorway, craftsmen and businesses hummed with print-presses, kitchen equipment and machine tools.
nrhp # 66000243- The Georgetown–Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District is a federally designated United States National Historic Landmark that comprises the Town of Georgetown, the Town of Silver Plume, and the Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park between the two silver mining towns along Clear Creek in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States.
The district includes well-preserved examples of the buildings and mining structures of the Colorado Silver Boom from 1864 to 1893. The Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park includes the reconstructed Georgetown Loop, a spectacular example of 19th-century 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railway engineering required to negotiate the 601 feet (183 meters) of elevation rise in the mere 2.0 miles (3.2 kilometers) between the two towns. Historic steam locomotives pull passenger trains over the loop from late May through the beautiful Autumn colors of early October. Guided tours of the Lebanon Silver Mine are also available.
The district was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 13, 1966.
Gold was discovered in Georgetown by George and David Griffiths in 1859, and Georgetown eventually took its name from the former. The gold finds in the area were relatively minor, but a major lode of silver was discovered in 1864, kicking off the local boom. Georgetown became a center for thousands of miners operating in the surrounding hills. Silver Plume was developed as one of a series of satellite camps, and in 1884 the Georgetown Loop Railroad was built, connecting the two by rail. Mining declined in the 1890s, and the area has since had a relatively low population.

Showers and Laundry
GMC offers up to 20 showers and five loads of laundry a day on a first come, first serve basis. They provide all the basics: soap, shampoo, towels, razors, and a laundry basket, etc.
Case Management
GMC case managers help guests determine what their needs are and identify the best steps for fulfilling those needs. They assist with benefits applications, referrals, housing applications, and counseling. Case managers are available in our center Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm.
Computers, Phone, and Mail
Guests are allowed to use the computers and phone in our center and may use GMC’s mailing address to receive mail. We believe in helping people stay connected to the world, whether it’s with family and friends, case workers, the doctor, or the news.
Coffee and Sandwiches
Though GMC is not a meal program, they strive to have coffee and sandwiches available for guests.
Medical Care
GMC has two psychiatrists and a general practitioner who come to GMC weekly. They perform basic health assessments, write prescriptions, and give referrals.Joe
