Geometry - Perfection
Created for the Illuminating York Festival of 2010 by Ross Ashton and Karen Monid, "Rose" is a Son et Lumière which explores the idea of the the rose as a metaphor and a symbol.
The centre of the piece is the illumination of the Rose Window in the South Transept of York Minster. Images created from stained glass and illuminated manuscripts. the soundtrack was specially created by Karen Monid and features recording of poetry read by local volounteers.
The Festival runs from the 27th to the 30th October 2010
I pretty much like abstract pictures. Sometimes, it's difficult to find things one can take a picture of, that qualify for an abstract photo. This one is a shot I'm very pleased with. The strong diagonal is present, the rectangles emphasize the feeling and on top of that, there's the colors.
During July's After Dark event guests enjoyed the Exploratorium's new Geometry Playground exhibition as well as mesmerizing aerial performances by TrapezeWorld.

For the month of September, 2009, the MSOE challenge is 'Fractal Geometry'. Fractals are self-similar: their parts mimic (more-or-less) the whole. Some of the exotic species within this mathematical family have precise familiar shapes, like the simplest rectilinear object you could imagine, the triangle. Others have organic lines like coast lines or plants. The fern is a stereotypical example; oblong leaves with branch off of veins which in turn branch off of other veins, in a self-similar manner.
In this mono print, I am comparing and contrasting the aspect of self-similarity, by combining a block printed Sierpiński Triangle (the holes in which could in theory continue ad infinitum, but being human, there is a practical limit to what can be carved) and a printed fern leaf.

From my 'Playing with Geometry' solo show in September 2011, these prints are very limited edition, and won't be reprinted in the future.
These are three color letterpress prints, hand drawn by me, and lovingly hand fed, one by one, into a Chandler and Price press.
There are two options:
- print only: you will receive an 8 x 10 print mailed flat. ($25)
- print mounted on Plywerk base: you will receive an 8 x 10 print mounted on a Plywerk base (locally made here in Portland), with appropriate hanging orientation. ($40)
