Working out a new tree for the Providence Festival of Trees. Last year was Rocketry. This year is Geometry. Need to figure out internal and external lighting but here is how it looks so far and some WIP shots.
The idea of the Genesa Crystal (contraction of Gene-south-America)was developed in the 1950's by Dr. Derald Langham. It is based on the discovery and revelation by Buckminster Fuller that all 5 of the Platonic solids are contained within the CUBEOCTOHEDRON. The Genesa Crystal is the Spherical representation of the Cubeoctohedron.

A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole, a property called self-similarity.
The students from the school we visited were using this as an auction piece I believe - it was fun - it really made me think of other places we can put our creations - holiday gifts, birthday cards... so many fun thoughts.

Silver Geometry Project print #25
Printed on unsalted paper. The yellows are potassium dichromate, the purples are silver nitrate, and the blue-greens are cyanotype chemistry.
I've been noodling around some spherical magnets recently, a little desktop gift I got for Christmas, and while a lot of the fun is in just putting the stuff together there's something a little bit sad about how any given construction only lasts until I need the spare magnets to build the next one.
The idea of photographing the shapes seems kind of obvious but I'm not really sure how to get pictures that really capture well the shape of a construction, especially when it's something like this where there aren't really acute angles of inflection along the surface.
Like, this is fundamentally a dodecahedron, but each face is made not by a flat polygon (because these magnets can't hold that shape stably) but rather by a small five-sided pyramidal shape, three magnets deep: a single magnet at the apex, followed by a pentagonal ring of five magnets underneath, and a larger ring made of ten magnets beneath that.
In this photo, the closest magnet to the camera is the apex of one of those pyramids, but at a glance can you even tell that's what's going on?

Chapel Hill High's Honors Geometry classes built an 18 hole mini-golf course as part of their annual Golf-O-Rama. I shot this for the Chapel Hill News.

The honors geometry classes of Chapel Hill High School held their 6th annual Geometry Golf-O-Rama on Thursday evening in the shool gym. The Geometry Golf-O-Rama features an 18-hole miniature golf course built entirely by CHHS students and donates all proceeds to the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill.

This is my entry for Pullip:Fab! God this challenge was hard..I'm glad I stuck with the rectangle though, I was so close to doing spheres (I've seen so many sphere/circle entries!) I was trying to with a brighter feel this time, my previous entries were both so dark, and both red XD
My friend H is getting ordained as a "cohenit" or Jewish priestess. She's a big fan of the Grateful Dead, so thus this mandala starts with the upper portion of the GD logo, shading into a Jewish star (balancing male and female polarities), atop a flower of life and a green half-circle (representing her interest in earth-honoring Jewish traditions), before rising into still-more-esoteric realms beyond.
The Musée d'Orsay was packed and vast tracts of people were queueing to get into the exhibition space, but I was determined to get this shot without anyone in it, for I wanted those clean lines and tones of light uninterrupted...
just making a heart out of my geometry book, no big deal :]
