This photograph is about permanence and ephemerality. The light as the sun was setting emphasized the physical presence of the sandstone, a substance that seems unchanging yet is not. Over time it slowly -- almost imperceptibly -- undergoes erosion and carving by wind and sea.

Impressions from the fifth day of our roundtrip around Iceland, when we travelled from Djupivogur at the East coast towards Borgarfjordur Eystri in the Northeast of the island. Very interesting were the strikingly beautiful toweing mountains shaped like pyramids, of which I passed quite a few.

The rocks that form the spectacular Kimberley coastline are made up mostly of sandstone layers deposited roughly 1.8 billion years ago at the bottom of a shallow sea. Around Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago, the layers have been buckled into large and often spectacular folds.

The discolouration seen here along the base of the cliff is the result of the constant rise and fall of the massive tides—of up to 11 metres—that occur in this part of the world.

"For thousands of years one of Iceland’s largest rivers, Jokulsa a Fjollum, (The Glacier River from the Mountains) has continued to flow from under the Vatnajokull glacier ice cap. It winds its way through a landscape of diverse aspects for a distance of 206 km, runs north to the sea and empties at Oxarfjordur bay. Besides being the country’s second longest river, its catchment area is the largest of all. North of Vatnajokull, the river crosses a barren, gently sloping plateau, but the current gains speed towards the edge of the highlands, where powerful waterfalls drop into the canyon. On its long journey, the river has carved numerous channels into the highland bedrock and to the west of Holsfjoll it cascades from a tall rocky ledge, forming the huge waterfall Dettifoss, plunging into magnificent canyons which extend all the way down to the bridge over the river on highway 85" (from Extreme Iceland)

Dynjandi waterfall in ICeland's Westfjords which is actually a series of waterfalls and only the largest, upper part is named Dynjandi. Due to the perspective there are only two falls visible but there are seveal other smaller ones in between. All of them together provide a drop of the water of over 100 metres.

Matka Canyon is known for its wild beauty above ground, but deep beneath its limestone walls lies a world that feels even quieter and older. In the hidden Vrelo Cave — accessible only by boat — nature has spent thousands of years shaping formations that resemble a frozen wave of stone. Here, the Treska River, which carved the canyon above, also created the first openings from which this subterranean world could grow. In the photo, several stalagmites rise like petrified sentinels, their surfaces built from endless layers of minerals deposited drop by drop. The warm lighting — from gold to amber — illuminates the textures of the rock, while the delicate curtains of stone high in the cave catch a gentle glow. Subtle green hues along the surfaces reveal minerals that have accumulated over centuries. The foreground is dominated by a rough rock edge full of texture and relief, giving the scene the feeling of a natural cathedral deep beneath the Matka massif. This is not a world of water and sunlight, but a timeless realm that has formed deep below — silent, layered, and untouched by everything that moves above the canyon.

A hidden world beneath Matka Canyon, where stalagmites rise like ancient sentinels and warm cave light reveals the quiet, layered beauty shaped drop by drop over thousands of years.

In a walking distance, east of the famous waterfall Skógafoss in the Southern Region in Iceland is a beautiful waterfall that few people visit. The name of the waterfall is Kvernufoss, and it is about 40 meters high. Although the waterfall is visible from a narrow-angle from the main road, it is almost hidden in a beautiful gorge.
