Rising some 5,906 feet (1,800 m) above sea level, Squaw Butte, named by Native Americans who used this area as their winter resort, stands at the north end of the valley. The Payette River was named after Francois Payette, a fur trader from Quebec who was put in charge of old Fort Boise in 1818 and traveled through the area. Permanent settlement began in the early 1860s, after gold discoveries in the Boise Basin brought people over the established stage and pack train routes. Two of these trails joined at the Payette River north of the present river bridge in Emmett.
In 1883 James Wardwell had the town platted, and in 1900 the town was incorporated as Emmett. Later, in March 1902, the Idaho Northern railroad came to the valley.
After the closing of the mines in 1906, the power lines were extended to Emmett. A series of irrigation projects made it possible for more rapid expansion of the town as the major service center for a farming and fruit-growing valley. In the early 1900s fruit packers adopted the label of "Gem of Plenty" because of the fertility of the valley. During the mining era the valley was known as the "garden" for the mining regions.
Until 2001, the city was home to a Boise Cascade manufacturing facility. The Black Canyon diversion dam on the Payette River, built in the early 1920s, is east of the city.

Why Gems? I'm fortunate enough to be living in the heart of London where all the major attractions are within a few bus stops ride away. I used to cycle everywhere.... Yeah back in the days!! Please, don't start on me now! Haha.. I only wished DSLRs were available then instead of 35mm film cameras that a college student could not afford to keep as a hobby.
Gems, because outside the usual places of interest there are hidden gems within them that are normally ignored. I must try to capture this beauty and rural places where tourists rarely venture.
I finally blushed my mermaids tail and my good friend did her shell tattoo since she is the element of water we thought the shell would be a good symbol!

Today I went out in the woods hoping to find something pretty. This is a pair of Gemmed Satyrs, so called because of the pretty little black design on the edge of their wings.
After my second shot of one of these beautiful butterflies I wrote this little sonnet:
Sonnet to Gemmed Satyr
Deep in the dark green forest I reside.
From leaf to stem I flutter and do hide.
For though my scales are brown and plainly laid,
Upon my wing a precious gem's displayed.
Though my nature is most virtuous and staid,
I can not moult that pretty bold brocade.
Tis bright and white like Venus in the sky!
Its blue and black dimensions please the eye.
Like a vane this gem doth point and pull and guide.
Tis vanity that would span the bridge of sighs.
Sooner than be seen by those who'd eat me!
I'll hide out in this forest most discreetly.
Rather than be gleaned by those who'd slight me.
I'll hide and wear this gem that most delights me.
I will add the story of how I found this pair. I spotted a brown butterfly fluttering through the undergrowth. I couldn't see details well but thought it might be a Henry's Elfin. I followed for a while but it didn't land. It flew over a large fallen Juniper. Not deterred I got on my belly and crawled under the tree and when I lifted my head there it was perched on a plant a few feet away. It was a Gemmed Satyr! I got one shot and it flew on. I followed the best I could but lost it in the woods. I decided to pursue. Not long after I noticed this pair! I couldn't believe it. I have seen two Gemmed Satyrs in seven years. Now I have seen three in one day. But that is how it goes sometimes in the world of butterflies.
Designed by Filipe Alarcão, Portugal's renowned product designer, the Gem table is made with DuPont's monteli. A new material very similar to Corian. The monteli however absorbs the bonding of specific glue differently, making it impossible to view the pieces connecting. The end result is a piece that looks like it's been carved from a single stone. This item was manufactured in a limited numbered edition and each unit includes a signed certificate engraved in the bottom of each GEM.
Happy bokeh wednesday!
